This is just a pure straight up testament to great music!!! And I gotta agree with what dude said about those three songs… you put those on and people go absolutely NUTS over!!!
Soul music.. Music made with feeling and love.. Not made for attention or money.. The first time I heard this song my whole body got the chills.. Whenever people have protest and man tries to stop it.. Play this song and watch the people fuck cops up.. Any tyrant by that matter..
Man F#$@ VH1. they don't know ish about HIP HOP. Back in the Day they never gave HIP HOP any play. Pete Rock Made one of the Greatest Songs Ever with that Tom Scott Sample Record. Simply Amazing.
All i can say is when I heard this song the first time when it first came out it felt like I was in Church... like that beat was holy or something. Seriously... this was one of greatest hip hop songs made. RIP Trouble T Roy
First time I heard it I got chills and damn near shed a tear. To this day I listen to it and get the same chills like I did when I first heard it. There is just something about it that touches you. A few days after my grandfather passed away I put it on in the car and put it on repeat at least 5 times on my way to work
I did not know that that "hu, hu, huu" vocal thru the song was PR! I have the original 12" (2 of them!) and have played countless times. The song definitely changed sound of hip hop.
I didn't either! That's why I was laughing so hard when Jus Blaze said "All those years I spent looking for that record. ." I had been searching for the record for a while as well!
9th Wonder is right because I live in NC & that's how it was then, but for me, I worked in a record store in Forest City, NC! Shouts to Music City Records & Bo Whitesides/Owner! I was working part time then in 92' & like it was said in the vid, Bo got promos, so when he got the 12" in the store & I played it, I went BLANK! That was the moment I truly fell in love with hiphop even though I loved it as I did before then! Thank you Pete Rock & R.I.P. T.R.O.Y.
What's really sad is that T.R.O.Y. was only like 91st on the list of VH1's "beast ever" hip-hop songs.....LOL. Fuck you VH1 for that. T.R.O.Y. should be first. It is the best that hip-hop has ever offered so far in terms of musicality.
To be honest it's been a few years now and I am still mad as hell at VH1 for disrespecting Pete Rock and hip-hop like they did. T.R.O.Y. should be number 1, or at least in the top 5 of all time.
@rayodele If it ain't, it's in the top two, and the only other I may top it is 'Fight the Power". I use that to amp up my training, TROY to think about my life. Either way, this could go in greatest SONGS ever. Nuff Respect!!
I am proud to have been a 90's HipHop head, I respect ALL HipHop, I dont hate on the new stuff, but I am confident that the 90's era will always be a classic blueprint for that Boom Bap. I am entertained by ringtone rap beats, but I am inspired and moved by folks like Pete Rock! I thank Guitar Center for hosting a respectful forum that doesnt trivialize the impact this man has had on music, not just HipHop. peace
New hiphop beats are wack as hell i dont care who produces them nowadays. Be it even premier or pete rock again but the shit just fell off hard in hiphop. I cant listen to new shit at all just doesnt do it for me.
commercial is a wrong statement. peterock was commecial... but he had the underground art ior things. and the right attitude to be away from too much limelight.
This is just a pure straight up testament to great music!!! And I gotta agree with what dude said about those three songs… you put those on and people go absolutely NUTS over!!!

One of the best hip hop videos ever shot!!! Great discussion about the tune. Knowing the backstory of a monumental tune is very important.

True. I swear to god though, how could they have this song almost at the back? It's like a hip-hop crime or something.
