I smashed my finger in heavy metal cell door at work (at a juvenile prison) and it was probably the most painful injury I've ever had. I had to do this same procedure on myself and yeah, it sucked, but felt better afterwards. However, the finger was already infected, so now I'm on anti-biotics. At least I wasn't on a crab boat though. Yeesh...

Dude, Moi violated the well-known cardinal rule, you never upset the captain directly in front of him inside the wheelhouse. Keith is a well-known captain that is serious about how productive his deckhands and greenhorns while keeping them safe until the season ends. Remember, crab fishing in the Bering Sea has its risks and rewards. To earn that reward, work as hard like the other deckhands and git your teeth.
I remember seeing the guy getting fired but I missed the incident that led to his sacking.(trying to find it now on youtube). He did show some grit with the hot needle, but the constant moaning on deck would have marked him.
I have done this more than once. My only advice would be to use a needle or safety pin to burn the hole. (It goes in better) And soak your finger in ice-water till it's as close to numb as you can get it. It hurts like hell, but Cap'n Keith is right...It will start to feel better a lot sooner than if you leave all that fluid under the nail. OUCH!!!!
