The only problem I have with the stat that a person is 100 times more likely to die in a car crash than in a plane, is that there are over 100 times more motorists than air travelers. Of course there are going to be more motor vehicle deaths. At least I feel like if I drive safe I have some control over the situation. In a plane I am at the staff's and physic's mercy. But if I have to I will still fly, just hate it with a passion.

@brianbirc There's a difference between a plane crashing into a building and when a plane crashes into a field etc. When a plane crashes into a building the plane is pretty much disintegrated on impact due to the fuel and the structure. Take the building away and you have pieces left over most of the time. What a dumb thing to say.

The Saudi L-1011 fire was caused by a hibachi being used by the folks in coach. The plane was full of people on the Hajj, and they went and parked at the end of the runway instead of stopping near the fire station, so it took longer to get the equipment there. The voice recorders recorded people praying, and nothing else.

This is how the incident was recounted to me by my co-workers at lockheed who participated in the accident investigation.

@Coolgizzy Correct. It is a reconstruction from a documentary. These aircraft were approaching each other, one descending, one ascending, at 15000,17000 ft so no actual photo exists. Control realized they were approaching each other however IL 76 misreported his elevation. Control interacted again with IL, but the Saudi pilot took the evasive action as well, (instead of holding current course) .sealing their fate. A " bright flash " in the clouds was reported by a witness aircraft.

@TigerMeet2142 nope, I drive very safe so it's not dangerous. Also even if there is a crash in the ground, the vehicle just comes to a halt on the GROUND, and that is usually not deadly. But a plane is in the air, if something ever goes really badly wrong, it may fall out of the sky at high speed killing everyone one board, not much anyone can do to help.

Oh and as for your final comment about flying being safer than driving. That is a common misconception. The reason more people die in car accidents is because we spend much more hours in our lives driving than we do flying in planes. If we spent an equal amount of time flying as we did driving, there is no doubt flying is more dangerous. There is a reason that pilots have one of the highest mortality rates of any occupations.

@chrysalis72 There are several credible sites that have statistics, I only looked at one for the US in the early 2000's. Its true about air traffic being small compared to motor vehicle traffic but doesn't neccessarily mean its safer. In fact airplane collisions are one of the rarest ways for planes to actually crash because of the so many safeguards that control air traffic. (controllers, radar, tcas etc etc). Most crashes are the result of pilot error, faulty aircraft.

Deliberate or not, the 9/11 planes were still crashes, so they should be included on your list, otherwise list should be renamed top 10 accidental aviation crashes. By that rationale, the KAL and Iranair flights shouldn't be included because they were deliberate shootdowns as was the Lockerbie disaster.

Are you sure the picture for #2 is correct? It looks like the vertical stabilizer is correct, where JAL 123 lost the majority of its vertical stab in the initial failure that caused the crash. There was also enough of the fuselage left to preserve four survivors.
