I grew up watching Bird and even though these are replays I am still as amazed as when I saw them the first time. Can you imagine how good Bird and the Celtics would have been had htey not lost Len Bias?
there certainly arnt players like this around these days, what an unbelievable player he was .... any player these days would have stayed in the locker room with this sort of pain.
Len Bias should've been a part of this. I'm not even a Celtics fan and it eats me up about what that tea could've been like with him (and Lewis not dying). Could've given the bulls a real run for their money.
You can argue that there may have been a few players as good as Bird, but I guarantee when he was in his prime there was nobody better. I still think if Jabbar and Parish switched places I think Boston would've won 7 or 8 titles in the 80s.
@BigTimePride Well said indeed! Nobody before or after Bird has displayed his skill set. Look at what he could do - amazing shooter, not just long range and free throw but could also shoot with either hand, use his body as a shield to draw fouls = great post up player. Rebounding machine, determined to box out and read how ball will come off rim. Passing wizzard with superb court vision-thread the needle passes thru traffic + players legs! True leader, clutch and motivated team. Best ever !!
Father Time catches up with every NBA player. It just cant be stopped. Today you see players like Kurt Thomas, Juwan Howard, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash and of course, Shaq still doing their thing. They may not be as good as they use to be but they are capable of puttin up some numbers.
Bird arguably had the greatest basketball IQ in the history of the game. Some times I watch some of the things he did and it almost doesn't make any sense, because you look on the surface, and think no way, but he was quick in his decision making on the court. So intelligent, he could still boss the 'more athletic, less fundamentally sound' NBA league of 2010/11. What a player!
@bolder2009 i totally agree with you about the IQ part. it is something that is missing in the sport today and a major reason i dont watch it. I would rather watch the classic channel that i have instead of the live broadcasts.
I love the little backhanded five McHale gives Bird at 6.56- all the younger teammates are going ballistic at what Bird is doing, but Mchale is just like "yeah, business as usual larry."
larry bird is beast he is the celtics magic johnson. magic shocks us with his move but larry bird is just a great player he has the guts to play despite an injury willis reed only lasted a few minutes bird once he came to the game took care of business.
Great upload, a classic performance. Chuck Person was barking at Bird this whole series and even though Bird had back problems, his determination was inspiring. He just gritted his teeth and showed what a great all around player he was--running the floor, distributing the ball, pulling down rebounds, hitting clutch shots and showing Chuck Person how the game should be played.
People dont realize how great this guy was even though he's a legend. An inspirational performance that encapsulates everything that made Bird who he was..
One of my favorite NBA moment of all time... 'and hear comes Larry Bird"... stuff of legend.

If he played in a wheel chair, I think he would have at least got to double figures.

Good call. Magic was not a shooter and he would have struggled in the half court if not for Lou Alcindor.

@BigTimePride I agree, if Bird had Worthy and Jabbar on the front line...that would have been scary.

To me, nothing beats the Celtics/Lakers rivalry of the 80's. I grew up watching and became a fan of basketball. I miss those glory days.

The Boston Garden (or TD Bank...ugh) has never been and will never be as loud as when Larry Bird suited up.

At 26 years old he gave us 23pts, 11reb, 6ast. That’s dominant big man numbers.
At 30 years old he game us 28pts, 7ast, 9reb. that’s dominant point guard numbers.
and in 10 out of 12 of his seasons he easily gave us 20/5/5... the benchmark for an elite small forward.
The ultimate basketball player.
