It actually kinda looks like a freakishly large Terebellidae, or Spaghetti Worm. They are known for spreading their tentacles out for food, but they never reach that size. If this is the case that is one fucking large Spaghetti Worm you had an encounter with.

Hi paulejohnson1. At first your video didn't look like much,until Falkentrooper suggested to fast forward the video to about 1:11 and take another look at the rope thingy hitting you. It did not look like something that was swung at you. It appeared to be a very controlled recoil before and after it struck you.(Like a snake). Maybe you were looking at a big pile of kelp but the thing that swiped at you was a variant form of snake or ell?

Hi guys. I took a trip to Monterey this past weekend

is a filter feeder and NOT carnivorous
like many other Sea Enenimies.

well for one that one that hit him had to be done by something. It is hard to think it is fake because you see the thing bend and then hit with soem force so eally I dont know what it is but I can say I would have pissed my pants even if it was fake as you ar ein drak and looks like alone.

What sting? It was probably a root of some sort or sea weed and it a piece just happened to swing out. C'est rien.

Umm to all the people that said it was a giant squid... you're freaking idiots... first off it has NO SUCKERS only smooth THIN rope like tentacles and also way to many to be a squid, squid have 8 arms and only TWO long tentacles with FLATTENED PADDLE LIKE ENDS which they dart out to capture prey with, all which are equiped with large suckers ringed with sharp hooks or 'teeth'. lol at the ones that claim to know about marine biology but dont even know THAT MUCH.

It was probably a numera or the giant type of jellyfish, that probably explains the tentacles and the sting

maybe it was a dying squid that got trapped when the water level fell down...or maybe it was already dead, but you somehow "activated" a nerve and it moved...

it looks more along the lines of a huge jelly fish as squid dont have that much tenticals The world's largest jellyfish (lion's mane) supposedly maxes out at 8 feet across the bell, or slightly wider than the length of the diver including his fins. This looks substantially larger than that. I accuse Herr Photoshop, in the study, with the mouse

I still think the thing hitting him looks very alive although not necessarily a part of that kelp he was looking at. Squids, jellyfish,
etc. are strong underwater but..their body structures usually collapse under it's own weight out of the water.The thing striking him appeared to have a different look then a squid tentacle.I could be wrong.

No, not in the water.He claims that it was low tide. you can only access the cave on foot during low tide. BUT.... I still can't make out the face that a couple of you guys said are about 50 seconds into the video.
Plus... paulejohnson1 doesn't appear to be
responding often to some of the people's
questions.

Have you been invited by any SERIOUS marine biologists,scientists,etc to help them visit the cave again to figure this thing out? Next time..I would load up on a few weapons more lights and a couple extra cameras. Maybe a remote camera on wheels? You kinda screwed it up when you placed your question right over a portion of the last part of the video. Covered up part of your monster.
Keep us posted as to what you find out.

Another guess...Perhaps it was an extra large sea anemone?
Because it appeared to have a thick stalk with numerous tentacles
coming from the top.

Hi paulejohnson1. At first your video didn't look like much,until Falkentrooper suggested to fast forward the video to about 1:11 and take another look at the rope thingy hitting you. It did not look like something that was swung at you. It appeared to be a very controlled recoil before and after it struck you.(Like a snake). Maybe you were looking at a big pile of kelp but the thing that swiped at you was a variant form of snake or ell?

Tt looks like a Man'o'war to me, which is a sort of jelly fish that floats on top of the water with it's tentecles in the water (tentecles can grow about 100ft give or take)

I think its some Jellyfish, they hurt like hell, even the small ones. That would explain the pain you got from it, and maybe cause it was dying it took longer to shock you.

It was a big Jellyfish left in the cave by the sea low tide. In your video it's possible to identify the bell of the dead jellyfish and its tentacles.
