SurferJoe71.....I live in Pittsburgh Pennsyvania I surf longboard on the Eastcoast in Delmarva area 'Shout Out To Malibu's Surf Shop in OC MD".and New Jersey I had a good winter surf trip to Lake Erie -Presque Isle in Erie The Lakes are fun with right conditions ....Surf Up !!!!

I surfed the great lakes for years, then I went to Hawaii and surfed with some folks there. I had MUCH better wave judgement, and could paddle into waves better because it is so much EASIER to surf in more regular waves that are spread apart and predictable coming over reefs instead of sand bars.

hey i'm from Milwaukee,Wisconsin and i'm interested in surfing on Lake Michigan but i dont have the money for a winter wetsuit and i was wondering if there's any good surfing when the weathers warmer on a consestent basis. oh and i was wondering what a good surfboard for great lake surfing whould be and where to get one would be.

The Graet Lakes are huge and can throw up 30-foot waves in a very bad storm, maybe 50-feet at times. The 729-foot SS Edmund Fitzgerald iron ore freigther was taken by Lake Superior in the 'November Witch' of 1975, and 2 or 3 35-foot plus waves hit her. A Swedish ocean freighter in the area was battered bad and the Captain said he never saw such vertical waves coming one after the other close together at about 15mph or so. Lake sailors call them 'square' waves.

are the great lakes big enough to naturaly create surfable waves, or are those waves from large boats?

Yeahm totally large enough. They're not huge and they are a lot tighter than ocean swells but you can do it. Search for "Unsalted" for some great stuff.

As a Nova Scotia surfer, this looks pretty weak. But, you guys are making the best of your situation. I understand that the fresh water is much less buoyant than the ocean. That must be pretty rough.

I moved to Indiana from So Cal. I tried surfing the lakes. Buoyancy is a problem. That and the water is frigid. I did it for the novelty but it was a miserable experience for me. You guys are hard core!
