The music is from the place promised in our early days. Thats the main melody for the entire film really, that particular peice is called Sayuri's Melody. There are other versions of that song played throughout the film aswell.
Shinkai is all about virtual cinematography. There is always this etherial, surrealistic feel to his animation that I think is just absolutly amazing.
The monolouge over imagery brings to mind Terrance Malick. And his visuals make me think of that avant garde New Wave inspired film as art from the likes of Wong Kar Wai and Sofia Coppola.
All in all, I like your homage to Shinkai's work, and have been pondering undertacking just such a think myself.
Due to it being a film I had to do for TAFE which is where I was doing a film course it had to be over a certain length.
Originally I was going to do a 24 styled 7 min short but due to certain things (Actors, Locations etc) I couldnt do it. This film went from Pre-Production - DVD in under 2 weeks. I didnt storyboard it, and just shot off the cuff as it were.
Filming is "okay" needs some improvment, but i'm not going to say you're bad at it, because it's not like you have the proffesional stuff/tools to do a really good film.
But it's still a nice film that you made, pretty cool...
I don't have much to say, although i do see alot of improvements that can worked one.
Wasn't alot of acting done, so no comment on the acting. But i think the voices/talking/speaking needs more improvement. Something i'd like to see is maybe different weathers, or landscapes, instead of all "Flat" places and "Sunny" outdoors.
Thank you :)

Filming took about two hours I think. I also wish I had a better tripod, some of those panning shots still annoy me cause there a bit jerky.
I also didnt really have a lot of time so thats also why there arent more of a variety of shots.
One of the reasons there were a lot of wide shots was because I dont have a mic, and lip syncing isnt something i wanted to do..or had time to really.
