To be honest Guthrie could piss on his pickups and I'd still find beauty in the hissing sound they would make as they exploded but he just performed a solo that Morello could only dream of. He even had Dizzee playing air guitar!

As someone who's less impressed with wanky guitar solos than genuine, funky soulfulness I have to say Morello's original of this does far, far more for me. This guy can finger tap.. great. Love a bit of DIzzee though.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Listen to the actual Bulls on Parade solo. Like virtually all Morello's solos, he uses effects to make sounds you don't normally hear from the guitar. Guthrie was being creative by getting similar effects without even using any pedals. And you know, there's that little thing called 'showmanship' which is kind of important for putting on a crowd pleasing show. mk4music fail.

Second, I stated that this specific solo was bad. It sounds like someone just playing random notes as fast as they can. You can disagree, that's fine. But I stand by my statement that this is not music... it's more like a penis size contest if anything.

Govan is damn good at guitar, but he ain't no Tom Morello i'm afraid.
Govan shreds that solo like a heavy metal guitarist and does some of those funny, Morello techniques, but Morello rubs his guitar strings like a DJ scratching a disc, and it sounds bloody awesome! You can't fault him for technique, cos he does alot of the fast solo stuff that Govan did in this cover.
@sampicko ...Guthrie could easily do the morello solo, while morello could not do guthries. No doubt morellos solo is sick...dats wut he is known for, even though john frusciante actually started the dj scratching n funny sounds in 1990 during live shows a year before morello did it.
@francisco444 Morello's style is a bit different to Guthrie's. I can't imagine Guthrie jumping up and down to Drop-D riffs, or using his wah-wah pedal on a heavy chord. I picture him as more of an experimental, heavy metal shredder.

In fact, "versatile" is exactly what he is - He is very able to play a lot of styles, but outside of the rock and fusion stylings in which he's most at home, he sounds like 'Guthrie Govan playing ....' - It's really not very 'natural'. And it's not like he could have written this stuff.
It's much better to appreciate people for what they are, not what they are not....

I mean, in technical terms he's very hard to categorise because of the wide range of technical styles that he incorporates into his playing; it's just that he uses them to play the fusion stuff that he does, primarily. It would be interesting to hear what that guitarist would sound like though! I think of Pat Metheny as a musician who's impossible to categorise, as he does musically what GG does with technique, but as a player he's primarily a jazz guitarist....

You have no idea what you're talking about. Listen to the actual Bulls on Parade solo. Like virtually all Morello's solos, he uses effects to make sounds you don't normally hear from the guitar. Guthrie was being creative by getting similar effects without even using any pedals. And you know, there's that little thing called 'showmanship' which is kind of important for putting on a crowd pleasing show. mk4music fail.

listen to compositions of Bela Bartok, Stravinsky, Liszt, Shostakovich
listen to horn players like John Coltrane, then listen to guitar inspired by this type of playing like Allan Holdsworth.
Then finally listen to Frank Zappa. Then tell me if atonal music isnt music.

@endofitall I will start by saying that I do enjoy a lot of Zappa's work. Not because it sounds good, but because it is entertaining. I think his songs are funny. I do not listen to them strictly for the music, it's for the lyrics.
Second, I stated that this specific solo was bad. It sounds like someone just playing random notes as fast as they can. You can disagree, that's fine. But I stand by my statement that this is not music... it's more like a penis size contest if anything.

@mk4tmusic In my opinion this is how guthrie interprets morello's original solo.
A piece of advice not just in music but life generally, if u cant say something good just keep your comments to yourself. you'll end up being misinterpreted as a jerk or an arrogant know-it-all. Lets face it: this solo does not define guthrie's whole repertoire as a guitarist, nor his musicality. He is capable of doing anything literally, listen to his other projects. Even Vai and Satch commend his playing.

Govan is damn good at guitar, but he ain't no Tom Morello i'm afraid.
Govan shreds that solo like a heavy metal guitarist and does some of those funny, Morello techniques, but Morello rubs his guitar strings like a DJ scratching a disc, and it sounds bloody awesome! You can't fault him for technique, cos he does alot of the fast solo stuff that Govan did in this cover.

@sampicko ...Guthrie could easily do the morello solo, while morello could not do guthries. No doubt morellos solo is sick...dats wut he is known for, even though john frusciante actually started the dj scratching n funny sounds in 1990 during live shows a year before morello did it.

@francisco444 Morello's style is a bit different to Guthrie's. I can't imagine Guthrie jumping up and down to Drop-D riffs, or using his wah-wah pedal on a heavy chord. I picture him as more of an experimental, heavy metal shredder.

@sampicko Bingo. I love Guthrie's playing, a lot, but he isn't as "versatile" as some make him out to be. In fact, "versatile" is exactly what he is - He is very able to play a lot of styles, but outside of the rock and fusion stylings in which he's most at home, he sounds like 'Guthrie Govan playing ....' - It's really not very 'natural'. And it's not like he could have written this stuff.
It's much better to appreciate people for what they are, not what they are not....

I mean, in technical terms he's very hard to categorise because of the wide range of technical styles that he incorporates into his playing; it's just that he uses them to play the fusion stuff that he does, primarily. It would be interesting to hear what that guitarist would sound like though! I think of Pat Metheny as a musician who's impossible to categorise, as he does musically what GG does with technique, but as a player he's primarily a jazz guitarist....
