you are all crazy!! 1st., the chap shouting out the words does that throughout the opera as that is his job! 2nd puccini did not write a high c sharp at the end of this aria. It is sung at the end of the duet because the duet is i half tone lower than the aria!!!£rd., a lot of sopranos especially the ones that you cant hear all the way up the hill the only note they do is a screeched out C sharp and not the patrician emition of golden tone you have just heard from Tebaldi !!
@JussidelMonaco lol which opera fan doesn't know what promters are???
What im saying is that in this instace seemed over-necessary. What I do not understand is why Tebaldi, by 1958, well into her career, needs to be so constantly reminded of the words to quanto cielo quanto mar.

I hate this when the soprano is flat on the High A flats and B flats.. (like Tebaldi is on some) and No High D flat either. Just as well, she didnt have it.

@SiEtIn1 Kindof a non sequitor as the soprano is supposed to be the highest of all vocal categories.. so she should be comfortable with her upper register. Or she really should not be called a soprano.

@leonardovittori1 *with patience* she was a soprano with a short top, and she was not the first nor will she be the last. just like Domingo was a tenor with difficult high notes. She was a soprano because her tessitura was high as a soprano, which is very easy to hear. did you understand now? I hope u finally understand. kidding, Im sure you will insist she is a mezzo. I have a question: in your world, is Plácido Domingo a baritone?

@SiEtIn1 With patience, sigh... I do understand you and now I will ask you to listen to me. I listen to singers in the first ten years of their career to hear, what I consider to be their proper rep and vocal category. Tebaldi never had a good top, not even young except on good days only and they were few.. She frequently strained for notes like High B flats and was frequently under pitch on them.. Seldom did she have easy High B's or C's and never a thing above that.

@SiEtIn1 It was this lack of a real top and the fact that she had a powerful middle and low voice.. . the voice quality was sopranoish, the range was not. Clearly classifications of voices must be made considering both. Domingo for the first ten -15 years had B natural and High C;s and sang them.. As he grew older, they became more difficult. he is clearly a tenor to me. I never thought he wasn't .. Tebaldi on the other hand... was not comfortable after 1959 at anything over A flat.

Peccato, poteva rinunciare alla Butterfly perchè la voce era troppo pesa all'epoca secondo me. Comunque...ognuno fa quello che vuole. Non c'è scioltezza, e lacuto finale è molto moooooolto tirato secondo me, callassiano pè veroo ma la tebaldi proprio non mi piace.
Wonderful. Whatever crazy people who say she wasn't a good butterfly are either haters or idiots.

Can you imagine how great Tebaldi would have been if she hadn't sung flat on every note at the upper end of the staff? This is painful to listen to.

Renata Tebaldi is a great artist, but this is not one of her roles. She is a fabolous Leonora in Trovatore, and in Forza.

Yes I was expecting the high D flat too; was a little disappointed. I'm not that familiar with her so didn't know if she had it or not.

The only way she would have made it, is if someone used a stock prod and used it on her back end. She is not a soprano..
kgarmaker123 3 years ago
i read that she was really uncomfortable with her upper register
musoph21 3 years ago
Better not to sing it than to crack and have that be what everyone remembers over an otherwise fine performance.

@musoph21 Thats what's known as a mezzo.
