@shrubman4321 You need to read the books then, because they look closer to the illustrations in the books and Dorothy was much younger in the books. Return to Oz combined two of the Oz sequels written by Baum, and made some other changes (especially the beginning and ending), but it is closer to the actual stories than the Wizard of Oz movie was to the original book.

The original book by L. Frank Baum was not really intended to be cute n cuddly as there are witches and evil monkeys involved, so the MGM Wizard ofOz is a stark contrast between this. No singing, just sinister characters with wheels for hands or no heads or who can turn to stone. Enjoy all u kids :)

@johnedsel There's actually a middle ground that the books tread that neither movie does. They're not as scary and sinister as Return to Oz nor as sentimental asthe MGM musical. Baum actually intended the first book to be a modernized fairy tale with the gruesome parts removed.

I do enjoy "Return to Oz" even though I am not a fan of sequels. "The Wizard of Oz" is a timeless classic and is the best OZ movie. Whenever "The Wizard of Oz" comes on TV during the Easter/ Thanksgiving/ Christmas seasons, I like to watch "Return to Oz" right after it just for fun.
