In 1977, she became spokesman for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, Riperton also received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. She died at age 31 on July 12, 1979. This song Back Down Memory Lane was sung weeks before she died. RIP Minnie. We Love You.
In January 1976 Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy.[2] By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. Riperton was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis, but did not disclose that she was terminally ill.
One of the few R&B Singers of her time that was able to hit 4 Octaves when she sung. She was very gifted may she rest in Peace and her songs live on thru us.
This is such an amazing song. Of course, I would have the odd question of the day or comment. I wonder how many takes did it take her to record this song. Now that I think about it. Even if it took 12 takes, that is still amazing to hit that high note. Just remarkable and lyrically off da chain.... Nice post....
The legendary Miss Minnie Riperton brought us great music that we can still listen to. She was taken from us to early. I remember my mom playing the mess out of this song and I would be cleaning up the house on Saturday rockin' this. Bring back good music that meant something with a sweet melody. Love Me Some Minnie!
I love this woman...I miss the good old days where music like this had so much meaning that you could feel deep down in your soul...Thanks minnie..Rest in peace love....
Oh yeah, this one really reminds me of my late mother... Oooh wee, the hurt and the pain and how it use to be when she was hear... so much love and I give anything to have her here again. I named my second child for her... Helen Celeste Norwood is pure love!
why so much hate Mariah has an amazing voice. So did Minnie. Look at it this way its been over 30 years and we only have 2 know voices like that. Just enjoy it while its here
@aclass22 That's not true, there are others that can hit high notes as well, Mariah Scary is mainstream. Don't forget about Rachelle Ferrell, Shanice, etc I think Adina Howard can hit high notes as well...

She actually had a 5+ Octave range. She was the FIRST ever to do the Whistle Voice professionally...before Mariah Carey came on the scene. Had she lived, who knows how huge she would've been...
Imma need some of y'all to pray for the music of my generation. It's making us deaf and blind to quality and talent. I'm so glad I was raised on the 20th century music. It's so different now. If I hear one more song saying "back dat ass up", I will scream, cry and throw the computer across the room
@31makiahkiah OMG yessssss!! Im in my twenties and i have such a problem trying to listen to music meant for my age group....i find a song or two here and there....but it aint nothing like the old school....
Idk...maybe i'll say that about todays music in the future, when the music industry gets taken over by musically deficit robots lol....if it hasnt been taken over already lol
@TheQuietStorm25 Right, it's really upsetting that i have to settle because nobody knows quality anymore. As if the type of music didnt suck (this whole hip hop thing has not progressed since 2005), there is poor execution and lack of talent. Ive noticed that there are a couple of new people coming out with some wayyy better music like j. cole (Not most of his mainstream but mixtapes) and miguel and Frank Ocean. But no one can really match the music of the 1900's.
Even though I was born in 1989, grew up in the 2000s, and really know nothing about the 70s, I still somehow feel like I know this woman and that I knew her in a past life.
Won't get upset from the 23 dislikes. This is will forever be my favorite song and since my little sister died of breast cancer as Minnie...it holds special to me even more so!!
I thank God for Minnie Riperton who will always be on my Memory Lane. I trust that nothing is more real in this universe than the love and the power of God. Minnie never left us as long as she lives in our hearts and memories. Peace, be still.
To my knowledge there are only 4 singers in the soul/pop culture who can hit a super high range , Denise Williams, Minnie Riperton,Shanice Wilson and Mariah Carey. I don't know who's range is highest, but it seems every generation gets at least one singer who can do that. Nice.
You 23 people I just don't know what to say for you.Tomorrow please go to your family doctor and get your hearing check.Minnie forgive them for what they can't hear.RIP BABY
@theman11405 They're simply "haters" and there is really no cure for that unless they learn to love themselves and realize that we ALL have special talents and should not be jealous of the talents of others :)
As a kid listening to her sing this, I was so heartbroken. Loved to lay on the floor of my fathers music room with her on the record player. Knowing that she was dying make this song hard not to get choked up. Her voice was so rich. People who have ugly things to say about this woman have a problem. She died prematurely from an illness and all you can talk about a crack pipe, really?
I REMEBBER THE DAY SHE DIED AND IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY. SHE DIED ON JULY 20,1979. SHE HAD A VOICE THAT WAS GIFT FROM GOD AND HE BROUGHT HIS ANGEL HOME. I AM SO PROUD OF DAUGHTER. THIS SONG PLAY ALL DAY IN RADIO WHEN SHE PASS AWAY .
@MUSICLADY1963 I had a similar experience, my bday is July 19th, I was 7 at the time. I loved her music even then, and I was saddened by her death and I cried all day. Then I thought I was gonna die because I was a Cancer and she died from cancer, LOL. My Nana had to explain the difference to me.
I discovered Minnie during my first year of college...1974...i remember the album cover well...she was wearing overalls...women who wear overalls are cool..
RIP. I love Minnie I get sad when I here her sing. So many memories. She faced here pending death like a champ.Ill never look at baby breath flowers and not think of her. Much love to her daughter. Living in the memory. WLW
@cbrowne551 Mariah Carey tries to sing like Minnie but I too have not heard anyone that could hit those notes w/such a range..what a blessing it was to hear her..so sad she left us way too soon, but she's at peace now, at rest singing w/the angels in heaven, in God's Holy Court, in God's Holy Mountain..May she now finally rest in peace..
This was her last song before she died of cancer, she knew she didn't have long to live and said she wanted to do one last song before she died, sad song, but a great one. Rip love, you are amongst your kind now, ANGELS

What a wonderful tribute, to such a (real warm hearted legend) and “Romantic Song Bird!” ...(smile) ... "Again, many Thanks to my dear mother, who had taken the time, to have introduced me at a young age, to listen to such great talent!" ... "Her songs are very meaningful and timeless!" ... (smile) … “Minnie, you are truly missed!” … (Deborah J. Steele - 9/08/11)
