I recieved my dvd's, but there is none of the original music on them :( but that is ok it makes me pay more attention to my fav Terance Knox (Sargent Anderson) he is awesome!!
real wars aren't like call of duty... you cant just re spawn when you die, i think this show did a good job of honoring our troops from the Vietnam war and today.
My second encounter with this song was in Marine Corps bootcamp in 1997. My first?....when this series first came out on CBS in NYC in the 80's. It's crazy what the brain locks away until a personal experience brings it back to the surface. Awesome show, definitely too short lived.
i don't know why a song about cocaine was the song folk associate with the vietnam war when we all know the american army was dogged with heroin addiction problems
Loved the show! Main characters got injured and killed and there was an overwhelming feel of realism to the thing. Nothing was held back...as it should be. Cancelled way before its time :(
Sadly, the DVD sets didnt have the song during the intro!
We played our own tour of duty every week after school, we knew all the hand signals and even had some nerds from a lower class playing VC.. Man, those where the days! haha
Other than platoon, other Vietnam movies were unrealistic. Platoon and Tour of Duty were the most realistic. Casualties of war, Red Thin Line, Deer Hunter and We were soldiers were more of made for movie.
these guys were good actors and the show was well done, it all felt really serious and nothing hollywood about it... they didn't even try to make the americans look like the good guys. they just showed war for how horrible it was

@bad74maverick1 not that i know of, all the cool music was cut out and replaced with generic instrumental tracks. which leads to some annoying plot hole, like a guy commenting on jimi hendrix playing on the radio, when its not hendrix anymore :(
Not really, Tour of Duty was aired from 1987 to 1990, 1990 was technically still the 80's, the 90's began January 1991, so Tour of Duty is a series from the 80's.
This brings tears to my eyes cause i use to watch this show faithfully when i was like six years old and my dreams was always to join the Marines and i can't cause I don't want to hurt my mom and sisters..
@felixthecat228 We all have second thoughts,i tell me cousin and brother everytime they return home!! But still they say "Nope,i must go back,to fight for Freedom"! It makes me cry everytime i see the canadian flag on T.V to know i have family fighting and risking there lives over there with there buddy's!!
My father was obsessed with this show when it was originally out. He is a Vietnam veteran, he was a Marine, he served during the early years of the war. He's now 66 years old and EVERYTHING about his life is about Vietnam, the Marines, or that time period when he served. He LOVES this show, and I LOVE this song.
@Kiyema I'm a 69 year old vet like your dad. I can't afford to watch anything like this, it screws me up. Bless both of you, rejoice, we lived to see our children.
@Kiyema My dad felt the same way about this show, this became my favorite song before I even listened to music (and honest to god is still probably my favorite song). I was born in 87 when this show came out. I find it amazing that I was so young didn't remember the show at all and when I first heard this song, not on the show, probably on the radio in the car when I was 8 or 9 I INSTANTLY remembered it. Such a small thing so long ago had such an impact/influence on me.
@TheOriginal3P Not so amazing since the song came out DURING the era of the Viet Nam war. That's the reason that they used it. (Though I doubt they'd use a Justin Beiber tune for a show on Afghanastan.)
@jackiebaron2005 ~ Why don't you take that camera and stick it up your ass. My job, for 13 months, was to kill or be killed. What was your job in Northern Ireland. I served in Vietnam from 1969-1970, rode with the Black Horse (1st Cav), 75th Infantry Rangers, 3rd Brigade. I felt that when this television show came out that it was the very best regular series I had ever seen at giving folks a real feel for what went on over there. Not all these bullshit movies (except Gibson's true story movie about the Black Horse @ la Drang Valley in '65). Don't know if it's on DVD but it's really good for those of you too young to remember but, yet, curious.
I spent 11 months "walking backwards" in Northern Ireland with an L1A1 SLR in 1986 and no drama or movie has ever captured what happened there. I'm not doubting that you served with 1st Cav Airmobile but if you're trying to say that this show depicted what happened in Vietnam then you're just taking the piss. I never saw US forces throwing kids out of Hueys to their deaths in this show. I never saw gang rapes or torture or babies being napalmed in this show. Did you?
i still remember this song since i 9 years old...everyday at 8.30 pm my father always yelling at me.." change that channel, i want to watch NAM TOUR OR DUTY "!!!!!..how many time i want to say!!!!!!!.now i am 31 years old and i still remember that.
I think I will start watching this series again... Been a while since I popped in the DVDs. I am still missing the last two seasons of the Dukes of Hazzard on DVD. Lol
Some of these guys who claim their daddy died back in the 'Nam must be the spawn of frozen sperm or embryos, 'cause none of them look or sound old enough.
Great series! I am so glad that I recorded it when it first ran with all of the original music. Every now-and-then I pull out the VHS tapes and watch the entire series.
@mogges1 I'm so sorry mogges1 my mother and 13year old brother were killed in war too 1979 in Nicaragua, I was saved by a great group of people, I was only 9years old.
@mogges1 My cousin was in Nam. He passed away about a month ago and hardly talked about his 4 tours over there. All he would say is the dirt was red the jungle was green and hell waited for you at the landing strips and LZ's
My heart breaks for you. After being a Sgt in the Army I know.......but I don't know how it must affect those at home. May you forever find solace in knowing your father must have been brave beyond what any medal can show. I am a Global War on Terrorism vet, so perhaps you can view me as a brother with an open ear. You had the courage to bare your soul and that is heartbreaking and after losing 45 close friends and my best friend I count you with the brave. God Bless.
@partisanfighter97 Thanks for you service Friend. In my day we did our year and went home. I am appalled how we keep sending our troops back tour after tour. Your war is brushed under the carpet worse than ours.
@mogges1 thats very touching. minus the fact that i highly doubt your dad fought in nam. alotta people try to be cool by saying there dad fought in nam as a sniper or a heavy machine gunner. which is bullshit every time. thats like saying my dad was adolf hitler. yeah not very realistic. yeah sorry but i doubt your dad fought in nam.
@artard1alert tour of duty..more like tour of shitting your fucking pants..All you fucking yanks did is drop napalm on innocent people .hey! maybe the guy referring to his father is Vietnamese..Get your fucking facts right looser..
@TRAVARAST yeah what are u some douche fucking queermo australian?? i probably have more of a life than youll ever have you fagg rapist. and shitting my fucking pants?? really?? thats uhm soo clever you must be such a jokster. yeah jk not funny at all or clever. yeah eat a fat dick. asshole. and btw im from belarus so yeah uhm we didnt really fight in vietnam. fucking dumb ass. "Get your fucking facts right" yeah how about u do that too fucking hypocrite. your a fucking retard. go milk a dick.
@artard1alert I am from neither of the countries that you mentioned..As for a life, well, traveling the world and living in more countries than you can name..There is no better life .. Last 3 years here in Vietnam..so if you can match that..
As far as my origin ..I am Croatian ...and as for all the things you suggest I do..I haven't tried any of them ..sounds like you have..so tell me what's it. like.
@TRAVARAST im belarusian and spanish, hence the name lorenzo. and im straight as an erected dick , thats for sure. and milking dicks is for straight girls and queer guys. neither of which am i. but honestly i highly doubt that that person had a dad fight in vietnam. seriously. people do this shit all the time where they try to be cool and try to have people feel bad for them. which is a crock of shit. but whatever. fuck the free world.
@Ssnake145 no asked for your opinion motherfucker. go suck lil waynes dick. animal diareaha eater. your not in this conversation so back the fuck off.
Go fuck yourself you prick, his dad died saving you and your shit country. Hell, Im a Colombian. I go to a military school, and I dont like North America, but I respect Soldiers. Show some respect.
@thisisjustabackupacc Heh. The US, a shit country? Compared to what? A drug corrupted third world shit hole like Columbia?? A Columbian at a military school? I think that's kind of like of an amputee trying out for a national football team. You're wasting your time and money, Son. Better to pursue more profitable ventures. Like cocaine trafficking.
That was a rather childish remark, wouldn't you say. Why is it that you can't bear to hear any criticism of the US? That right there is the height of insecurity. I'll gladly agree when someone points out the shortcomings of my country. That's what rational and mature people have the gumption to do. You by comparison fly off into some tantrum like a spoilt child when somebody accurately shows you a truth that you find uncomfortable. You ought to grow up.
@jackiebaron2005 Good Lord, just a bizarre comment. Here's the original. Obviously you didn't read it. "Go fuck yourself you prick, his dad died saving you and your shit country. Hell, Im a Colombian. I go to a military school, and I dont like North America, . . ." So, no, I wouldn't say it's a childish remark. It's perfectly appropriate. "Can't bear any criticism of the US". Now that's a childish remark. And, what truth in that remark was shown so accurately?? Maybe you ought to grow up.
@thisisjustabackupacc lol stfu with that ''serve your country shit'' and ''save your country'' america screwed them,
while america was not even in danger. and they didnt care about their lives, they were just dumb yankees doing it for the ''rush.'' I DO have respect for some of the soldiers tho.
Im not even North American. But I belive we should all defend out countries no matter what. Yeah, even if you don't agree what there fighting for it's still great you respect them.
Regardless of who ran and who didn't people still need to respect soldies regardless on whos side they fight for. Hell I respect the Vietnamese, they showed bravery and valor during the war. I respect all Soldier.
@mogges1 sorry. i dont get it. if your making attempt to be funny its not working at all for you, little shit. shut the fuck up and go 69 more chipmunks. socialist pig.
@aiex72aiex72 yeah you must have tons of friends for voting me down. shut the fuck up little hoe. milk your own dick and find some friends. mind your own buisness to tree fucker.
The series was pretty darned close to the real thing.

Great series! I am so glad that I recorded it when it first ran with all of the original music. Every now-and-then I pull out the VHS tapes and watch the entire series.

This song applies to inner wars just the same.
I`d say it`s about that struggle that goes on even if a "real" war is won...

How come in the DVD release of this that i bought it didn't have this song as the intro it was infact quite disappointing.
SomedaysDreamersBC 5 months ago
@SomedaysDreamersBC Sadly there was a licensing issue over most of the original soundtrack of the series.
Only get the generic compositions in the DVD Box set,
Big disappointment sure, but after watching the 1st season recently it was easy to forget. Luckily youtube preserves some of the awesome!

Go fuck yourself you prick, his dad died saving you and your shit country. Hell, Im a Colombian. I go to a military school, and I dont like North America, but I respect Soldiers. Show some respect.
thisisjustabackupacc 4 months ago 47
@thisisjustabackupacc Heh. The US, a shit country? Compared to what? A drug corrupted third world shit hole like Columbia?? A Columbian at a military school? I think that's kind of like of an amputee trying out for a national football team. You're wasting your time and money, Son. Better to pursue more profitable ventures. Like cocaine trafficking.
ClockCutter 3 months ago 2
@ClockCutter
You ought to grow up.
jackiebaron2005 3 months ago
@jackiebaron2005 Good Lord, just a bizarre comment. Here's the original. Obviously you didn't read it. "Go fuck yourself you prick, his dad died saving you and your shit country. Hell, Im a Colombian. I go to a military school, and I dont like North America, . . ." So, no, I wouldn't say it's a childish remark. It's perfectly appropriate. "Can't bear any criticism of the US". Now that's a childish remark. And, what truth in that remark was shown so accurately?? Maybe you ought to grow up.
ClockCutter 3 months ago

@thisisjustabackupacc lol stfu with that ''serve your country shit'' and ''save your country'' america screwed them,
