@TrigonImmortal How in the word are you letting the presenter detract from the information? Information lives beyond the holder. It operates like a virus, as does it's friend ignorance.
@FoxHansJohnsonMD Under the same effect that reading a poorly written book about a fantastic subject has. It may still be wonderfully informative, but an utter annoyance to trudge through.
Yeah, it's a shame ignorance works that way. Assumption does, too.
so, what he's saying was,America (south or north etc..) is one of the country with highest rate of obese and one of the biggest source tht contribute to this case are like Mcdonald and coca cola company. alrite, we get it ..
Ok, just watched it all. I pretty much agreed with everything, until he revealed "Toxic sunstances that are abused" where it said "cannabis". I disagree with that ...
Just watch the video. He's saying 80% of the problem is diet and only 20% is exercise. Soda for example has been engineered to make you thirstier by using a large amount of sodium they have to mask with more and more sugar. So you drink and your body can't use it up, so it stores it as fat. Children aren't just born lazy and fat. They are active, they want to eat normally but at a young age sugar is forced upon them. These companies are making sugar addicts, HFCS is horrible for you.
I'm only 10 minutes in and so far this guy is full of shit. I weighed 205 at 5'10". I went on a DIET, and I started EXERCISING and got down to 150 within 6 months. Easy. Now I am 135, 7% bodyfat, absolutely ripped.. I kept the weight off and I don't ever see it coming back.
But apparently this video has something to do with soda, and I went from 1-2 cans a day to zero, I really changed my diet drastically. We'll see what else this guy has to say.
wow, this is very informative! i'm very glad i watched this. one criticism, though - around 1:02:45, dr. lustig included cannabis among the abused and toxic substances list. potentially abused, sure. occasionally observed negative side affects? yes, as with any psychoactive substance. toxic? hardly. the LD-50 of marijuana itself is so high that it is virtually impossible for a human being to ingest such an amount. let's avoid spreading misinformation against such a miraculous, beneficial plant.
I believed this until I saw the movie Fat, Sick, And Nearly Dead. Two guys used juice machines and only drank fruit and vegetable juices for months. One lost 100 lbs. and the other lost 204 lbs. They did not consume fiber. Their juices were full of fructose. If Lustig is right they should have gained weight. They did not eat any sucrose or wheat products, just juice. Something is missing in his hypothesis. I do agree that high fructose corn syrup is bad. Raw vegan high fruit dieters lose weight.
@MrMoneyHelper Naturally-occouring Fructose != Processed/refined Fructose (HCFS). The fruits and vegetables are intrinsically armed with not only fiber, but more importantly, various anti-oxidants, flavanoids and phytochemicals. These exert tremendous health benefits/protection against free radical damage, and in no way, should this talk be interpreted as vilifying fruits and vegetables. Besides, this is just ONE corollary of a myriad of factors leading to Obesity/Chr. Disease.
I should have made it more clear, I wasn't calling you an idiot but this doctor. He has some good points but taxing won't deter people from changing their diet. He used cigarette as an example. I have friends that smoked for over 20 years and the government keeps on raising taxes on them. Well, most still smoke regardless of the price so he is completely wrong. This doctor might point out the problems but his ideas on resolution is lacking.
@Sllvlloov Thats basically the point I was trying to make, glad to see someone else recognizes that his solutions are pretty lame but his data on the problem is spot on.
@Looter222 They don't need to tax anything. Thats bullshit if they do. None of their god damn business what we consume. We have freedom of choice without some bullshit taxes.
Regulation and taxes are the #1 scam globally. Personal responsibility, education and liberty are the answer. The government never has the right solutions. How about a free gym membership and nutritionist armed with this information. Problem solved.
The problem is GOVERNMENT!!!They create all our problems and offer all our solutions. Do you really think the cola/food industry didn't buy off congress? Create farm subsidies to grow more corn instead of say broccoli. The findings here are wonderful, but the solution is not to raise taxes because we all know that taxes are a scam!!! We get poorer and healthier, they get richer and create more government bureaucracies. Does government build more parks, bike paths or free gyms with taxes, no! <3
Sugar isn't the problem, it's High Fructose Corn Syrup, which our bodies can't metabolise properly. HFCS has replaced sugar in nearly everything because it's "cheaper" to produce. Why is it cheaper? Because the government subsidizes farmers... who grow corn, so most farmers have stopped growing anything else, since they get paid even if they don't end up selling it. This also had the wonderful side effect of raising prices on all other foods, since farmers got rid of their other crops for corn.
@drcldrcl Sorry to disagree. I lately spent an afternoon in the busy shopping district of a German city of half a million and saw 99% pedestrians of normal proportions. Here in the US you a) don't see many pedestrians (if you see them they are either young, sports buffs, or homeless) and b) about 50% of the people you encounter in shopping malls are overweight or obese.
@lalabrige germany consumes 86lbs/person/yr of sugar according to my calculations.
From the Berlin-Institute website "In the US overweight has taken the form of an epidemic. But Germans are likewise becoming fatter. Strikingly, Germany has a slightly higher percentage of overweight people (excluding obese people) in comparison with the US, but a lower proportion of obese people (Sources: World Health Organisation, National Center for Health Statistics, German Federal Statistical Office)."
Cigarettes are not healthly, however, additional tax on them is not for the consumers health, but an excuse to justify the governments action of ripping smokers off.
As for everyone paying more because of obesity, do you really believe that if obesity was to be resolved you would pay less tax? You have more chance of angels flying out your arse. The government would simply have more funds to start more wars like they have been doing over the last 10 years!
Is someone translating (subtitling) this video into finnish language? If not, I would like to help. I feel it is important, because here in Finland we seem to have sort of "information filter" on this topic.
The US needs to stop subsidizing the US Sugar and Corn Refinery industries, more and more subsidizing simply facilitates the tax-free mass-market push for more and more sweet products into supermarkets listing sugar and HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) as the foremost label ingredients.
We're literally being killed by diabetes & cancer, sugar/HFCS are the predominant causes!!
@l33tuzer I say do away with all stupid taxes like the one you want to happen. I say take away stupid extra taxes on cigarettes and alcohol as well. We should have freedom to choose what we want without the dumb fuck government making money off every little thing.
Cannabis is non-toxic. Indisputable FACT. Why the hell did he put it there? You can abuse it, but it's not toxic. It should be there with caffeine and nicotine.
this issue requires radical action that the majority of americans are too afraid to take; it's the ancient issue of bread and circuses: we stuff ourselves to oblivion while watching stupid tv shows and show little interest in controlling our destiny
The one constant in all the research in disease and obesity is the western diet...societies that eat high fat do well, societies that eat low fat do well...societies that eat high sugar....don't do so well....western diet is the culprit
Most of this presentation is very good, but a)commercials works and interdiction doesn't b)people can and do alter their behaviour constantly: "I found myself concluding (...) that emergent mental powers must logically exert downward causal control over electrophysiological events in brain activity. Mental forces were inferred to be equally or more potent in brain dynamics than are the forces operating at the cellular, molecular and atomic levels". Roger Sperry, 1983
@tuktukpsh lets see some literature that isn't 30 years old and reflects current findings regarding people's ability to inhibit their behavioural patterns.
@bwgolem I don't see a problem with literature being old or not independently of the validity of the arguments it exposes. Anyway I surely welcome your inputs if you have suggestions about material on the subject, old or new. I myself have altered my eating behaviour radically over theyears, I can't yet think of any reason at all why it would be considered such a big deal, as in "beyond one's control".
Another angle on this story is that the rich, at least to a greater extent, don't buy as much of the sugar because they are better educated and know better. Also, because corn production is so heavily subsidized, HFCS artificial foods are cheaper than whole grains and vegetables. The poor eat so much junk food because it's cheaper to satiate their families with it compared to the time and expense of finding and preparing wholesome foods.
@CTVsantacruz i just wish he would go more into the 'whole fructose with fiber (fruit) isn't bad for you' more, just seems like he says he makes us fart. it's almost like he's saying it's ok because it has fiber and you need fiber so the fructose that you will get from it will be worth it in the long run. Or is it that the entire load on your liver is eradicated and treats it like a glucose (when he compares digestion between the two pieces of bread, beer, and HFCS)?
@sbt200224 Actually is more because fiber stimulates cholesterol transit to the liver to be processed, and thus lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, while fructose highers cholesterol levels.
@CTVsantacruz Gary Taubes is one of the ones that brought this to light. As well as Richard Eades. Even researchers in the 70's knew this info. but were silenced by the govt.
Good info, great intentions. I agree with a majority of what he says, but the slight preachy tone irritates me. That, and he says "'kay?" after every few sentences to the point of distraction.
