Damn !!! I'm gonna go and roll me a doobie !!! I thought I'd never hear this again.... If you're a John Prine fan, check out Tom Waits, too. Happy toking... HEY WILLIE< You got that thing rolled yet?
@dudshumane Sure do. I taped many a Stoneman special back in the day. I remember he would either be busy in the can or too stoned to notice the record he was playing had a skip in it and we were featured to the same two lines for 25 minutes. Died in his sleep back in 1984. Damn shame.
this guy never got what i think he deserved!! he has done it all!! and never sold his sole... u have no idea how many shows ive seen over the years where he has shown us that he ranks up there with the very best of the best!!!
Why can't I find the whole song? It was on his first album in 1971. At the time, it changed my whole life, and partially inspired me to learn to play steel guitar.
John....i sat on your lap at the bashville invitational jam....i would LOVE TO meet you again...sit on your lap...im 37 so i may be a bit heavier now LOL.....
I first saw John in 1971 in Chicago at the Earl of Old Town...he was stil a mailman..same raspy voice; one of the great phrase turners of all time...he WAS the 70's along with James Taylor, Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel
I kid you guys not. John Prine is actually my neighbor. He has a house in Gulfport, Florida (it's on the south side of St. Petersburg). Haven't seen him much only a couple times. But it's still cool to know that he lives right across the street from me.
@toocka45 I'll be right over.. Saw him in Melbourne Fla. Kris Kristofferson openned for him. Had a great time. They came out together for an ovation. may13th it was a fri.

I hate to burst bubbles here but when John wrote this is was actually about having an extra-marital affair. There are several interviews available where he states this. But I have to agree with you, this song was handed to potheads on a golden platter.
john himself has said that this song was originally not about any kind of mind altering substance...it was about wearing a smile in the face of life's constant adversity...however, as time went on it has taken on a new kind of meaning....funny how people hear what they want to hear....i think this may be the song he was playing when kristofferson discovered him
reply to stacybabiees. We can respectfully disagree on lyric interpretation, but I don't know how else to interpret escaping reality with something that doesn't cost very much and lasts a long while. Anyway the title should tell it all.
So many memories in my life are mixed up with Jon prine songs I couldn't begin to count. Thankyou thankyou thankyou

Hey - any one remember the Stone Man from WPLR in New Haven, CT? He closed his radio show with this song every night... those were the days!

A poet, and can play the guitar. When Kriss Kristofferson says of you that you are "the best song writer ever"-----well that pretty much says it all.
