thank god I live in the netherlands, we really don't need helmets here because we have SAFE cycle paths. (besides if you wear a helmet in the netherlands people laugh at you: NICE HELMET!!!!!)
Up until now i never had a helmet. Never died(obvious), never hit my head, and have been cycling for 15 years. Also have fallen multiple times.
Now I got a helmet. I still feel like it's a "fetch" thing. At list at my lvl. I do 80-100km rides 90% on the road(tarmac/gravel) with my MTB. The one plus for now it is that in a full sunny day, i don't get headaches because it protects me from the sun. Also on rainy days it keeps me warm. (Met Cosmo 2011-silver) Helmets are overrated.
I went into a bike shop last week and tryed a display helmet on. A few seconds later the owner of the store came over and said "Would you mind not trying the helmets on please" When i explained i needed to see if it was okay before i bought it i just got from the guy "Well take it off, OKAY?!" -_-
Most cyclists suffer head injury rates no greater than that of the general population and helmets are not made for impacts involving motor vehicles.
Use your head, don't rely on a helmet. Ride safe and look out for others who are not. Be active in preventing irresponsible road use. Don't just wear a helmet, prevent collisions from occurring.
The 85% reduction applied to children who had a simple fall off a bike and were under 5 years old. Don't expect the same result in different situations.
I always wear my helmet when I bike. In fact, I feel "naked" without it. Biking is becoming more popular in my small town that is run-over cars. Yet, people with double take when I pass by in my neon yellow vest, goggles and helmet. Sadly it is the "norm" for kids and adults alike to not wear a helmet. Or one that is so loose that it is barely hanging on to their crown. And parents reiterate, "they[kids] don't like the way it feels, so I don't make them wear one".
@LeakFreak Yes! If people think a helmet is uncomfortable, try a skull fracture! Modern helmets are light, well-vented and inexpensive. There are cool-looking helmets for $10 at Target. Any parent who doesn't insist on their kids wearing one is NEGLIGENT. You can lose your life, your ability to recognize friends & family, control of your body, your bowels, etc. As to it being "your choice" we all pay for non-helmeted victims when their insurance runs out. Wear a helmet and be safe.
Helmets and laws discourage cycling - serious health effects - safety in numbers - environmental strangle children - several deaths recorded increase the accident rate - 14% documented increase head impacts / rotational levels / neck injuries reduce civil liberties of choice cyclists offered less compensation than pedestrians or motorists diverts attention from other effective road safety less convenient to cycle police involvement increase cost see 'USA assessment cycle helmets'
i'm watching this wearing a helmet...
