I just got done doing a 4 hour "British invasion" show on the radio station I work for... I simply had to come home and listen to some of these tunes again.
The genius behind the keyboards with the early British rockers The Animals,He put his spin on Screamin Jay Hawkins just like he did on House of the Rising Sun for Eric Burdon and The Animals
Ha! Just twigged it! A little joke by Alan. The opening notes of the organ solo at 1:55 are just the same as his solo on "House of the Rising Sun" (although in a different key). See 1:45 in this video:

Cheeky bastard, after stealing all the royalties from House to buy the organ he used on Spell. I wouldn't give him the time of day. Still good though.
i've been looking for this version for a long time! in my opinion this is the best version. the others are really good but i have a halloween CD that i grew up with and this was my favorite song on it. it was this version too. so i've learned to love itQ
This is such a great track. . . It just smokes . . . . heard this first before Nina Simone which is a great version, but as a keyboard player from that era this is one of the great single tracks ever. Great to hear it again.
In Finland we had the radio announcers tell us that the House of the Rising Sun is written by Arnold Price... (Arr. Price) This is what the Animals instrumental side should have sounded like. I still prefer Eric´s singing to Alan´s.
Animal Tracks was probably the best blues album by white kids before John Mayall´s Bluesbreakers...
I still have the The Price to Play vinyl somewhere.
I agree. This has always been my favourite version of the song, and one of my top ten favourite records ever. I had the luck and privilege of seeing Alan Price sing it live. It was spectacular, and the live version of this song here is just like the performance I saw - well worth a look.
Fantastic song - you could almost hear Eric Burden singing this one and the structure is similar to house of the rising sun. Did Alan write this to show that he didn't need the other Animals maybe?
Alan didn't write this, it was a Screamin' Jay Hawkins number. Nina Simone did what many consider the definitive version, but this is amazing. House of the Rising Sun is a song from the US south dating from about 100 years ago. Alan Price arranged it for the Animals in 1964.
Personally, I think Alan's organ solo far exceeds either S.J.H's version or , to my mind , the (much overrated , but politically correct) Nina Simone version.

Much better than the Animals' version (then again, it comes from my least favorite pre-1967 Animals' album).

Such an amazing interpretation of a Screamin' Jay Hawkins Classic. Definitely one of the most impressive covers.

...actually the Animals version of the song is nowhere near this one. It is a basic 12-bar thing.
But you can hear the same chord progression on Joe Cocker´s version where Eric Clapton plays some very elegant fills.
Alan had lost his mother just the day before he recorded this. No wonder it sends the chills up your spine.
