Just because they could envision the concept of a flying machine doesn't mean they had the means to build them. They were intelligent thinkers. A plane has similar dimension to that of a bird, and they see them fly all the time. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them to come up with designs for flying machines. Perhaps modern man then took those blueprints, and having the means made it a reality? That one glyph looks JUST like a helicopter.

There's another poster who suggests that the Egyptian 'airplanes' are actually the alterations/obliteration of previous hieroglyphs. The Egyptians were famous for doing such things but I tend to question this hypothesis as these glyphs have too much inner continuity in their shape and form. That is not to say however that they represent actual airplanes, submarines, et cetera. We'll probably never know what exactly they represent.
