Roberto does a good job, but I've been spoiled by the likes of Caruso, Bjorling, Corelli, and Pavarotti.

Caruso's 1904 benchmark 'E lucevan le stelle' is my favorite. He had such an amazing resonance, it even rose above that tinny recording.

Apart from the fact that he is definetly a great voice, he sings the note a1 like he speaks, no effort of all(it's the first time I hear him by chance on youtube), since he starts to look straight in to your eyes he dosen't blink not even once... I agree with pieritlyon . . Roberto Alagna combines all the necessary facets vocally for pulling this off masterfully . . . Let someone else do Des Grieux and Radames. Have Roberto Alagna do roles like this Mario and also Romeo in Romeo et Juliette! I especially like that heartbreak inflection. However, after 2:18, some notes flattened a little bit here and there. I wish sometimes that I weren't cumbered with the ability to hear even the slightest bit of flattening.

I answer to Glassies: it is not the real Castel Sant'Angelo, but a stage scene from "Puccini - Tosca / Gheorghiu, Alagna, Raimondi, Antonio Pappano (2001 film)", filmed at the Covent Garden. You can find more informations at Amazon. ;)

I'm sorry but it's not a stage scene at all. All the sets of the opera have been recreated in Germany - in Cologne which as the most important studio in the world - where the film has been filmed. But B. Jacquot has also filmed & put in this movie the real decors so you can really see the Castel Sant'Angelo. So, Amazon is quite wrong : this is absolutly not the Covent Garden version at least not in this specific video ;).

I've been fortunate to have seen Alagna, Domingo and Marcelo Alvarez perform this, and I must say that Alvarez and Domingo were far superior. In fact, Alvarez actually stopped the show - the audience applauded and cheered - apparently you are not meant to!! One critic wrote that the applause ruined the orchestral coda (whatever that means!) I say if a singer merits applause give it!

Just so you know, i super imposed this video and anhd mp3 i have of pavarotti singing it and the only difference is that the tempo in the Alagna version is a bit slower. He holds the notes just as long. The difference would be give or take half a second. didn't know that how long you held a high note was an indication of the strength of your voice *sarcasm*
