Love the way he smiles just before he starts singing again - because he's realised that he'd forgotten to say 'Oh Well' - the title! And the laugh he does is just beautiful .. Love this guy ..
I saw the original Mac in a small club in Birmingham, MI back in 1969 & they tore the house down. This video is cool, but their concert with lively people was much better. In fact, I think Peter started laughing because he was performing to a bunch of squares.
ok there is a recording of "oh well" that is live in Japan or China as the song ends with some very cool haunting asian flutes or something, anyone know what i talking bout?
@swacbro Thank you, i love that version as it used to play on the radio all the time when i was a lad & later i could not find it anywhere as i was always thinking it was live for some reason? peace!
It certainly isn't the generic sound that currently plagues our airways today: It's raw and real, the way music should be... For what it's worth, I've always liked old and new Fleetwood Mac. Never thought of music as competition -- like it's become in recent years -- just artists sharing their innermost beauty that stems from a collective consciousness that can not be fathomed in this world. With that said, Peter Green, is sadly, the most underrated musician of his time... Thanks, MB :)
I really dig this song; this performance seems a little rough, but it was brand-new at the time, apparently. Before I saw this, I only knew this song from Lindsey Buckingham-era FM, and their version does kick ass.
@MrCraigDNelson Jeremy Spenser on the maracas (he's one of the best slide guitarists ever), Peter Green on lead vocals (obviously), Danny Kirwan on guitar, John McVie on bass, and Mick Fleetwood on drums. The best R&B band to come out of anywhere, period.
Comparing the Peter Green era of "Fleetwood Mac" to the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era is ridiculous since both have very little in common.....
One is born out of the British Blues music scene of the late 60's, the other comes from the California pop/rock movement of the mid 70's. Different styles, different influences. Neither is better or worse than the other.
It just ultimately comes down to your preference. The Mac was a group that evolves with it's band members and what they brought.
I got to see the "Oh Well" tour at he Fillmore in SF. They friggin rocked the place! Take may word for it and I have seen all the biggies, they were right up there. I never much liked Fleetwood Mac after Peter left. The whinny witch drives me nuts! I just heard Mick Fleetwood interviewed and heard his new Mick Fleetwood Blues Band play some of the Peter Green tunes. Sorry Mick but YOU CAN'T TOUCH IT! The guitar player was predictable and lack the depth that Peter Green had. Play on Peter!
One of the great all time blues rock songs. This and the green manalishi were Peter Green at his apex. I think he may be tripping. I recognize that lysergic laugh!
Man I used to listen to this song 24 7 in the late 60s. I wore a hole in the record I had of it. It came on a record called the Big Ball. Takes me right back to my little record stack on my 99 dollar record player by my bed.
@fcassociates Mick Fleetwood said in his autobiography that Danny was mentally ill and really not taking care of himself, let alone making music. Very sad :( He was so cute and talented.
Well, everyone justifiably loves Peter Green but we should not ignore Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer. This was my favorite "chapter" in the bands career...hey where in John McVie in this TV show. He what show is this?
I was lucky enough to hear this live in a mall sports arena (4000 people) in 1970 Atlanta...was about 15 feet from the Mick Fleetwood side of the stage in front of the speakers..high as a kite (from the music). Yes, Mr. Green is the Real Deal. I am glad that the writer of Stevie Nick's first solo hit, Mr. Tom Petty, gives homage to Mr. Green by playing Oh Well live for the past five years. I hope Mr. Green gets some money for the song eventually as the record company screwed him royally.

@BlackMonk66 When Peter Green recorded and toured with Oh Well there were no Ladies in the band. Christine McVie did the album cover drawings and the band didn't know Stevie at the time.
@DoowahDiatribe No, Christine wasn't a member of the band, but she played on some sessions. For instance, she's playing the piano on "Love That Burns."
@STEVEMOR909 - John McVie is on the far left on the stage - he's basically out of shot for the duration of this clip. As for Christine, she didn't join the band offically until the year after this was made in 1970. By then, Peter Green (lead guitarist and singer) had left the group......
This is a fine example of the Green God at work with the boys. Danny on lead and Jeremy of maraccas! I wish they had stuck together instead of the many changes FM has gone through.
it blows my mind to have listened to this since 69,,,and fuxin loved how it rocks the shotout of most other songs..BUT i am amazed to see that it's DANNY who is doing the lead riff at the break..OMG..i always figured it was Pete.,,omg they have THREE lead quitarist here..what a fantastic great group they were. OH WELL 1969
@CHUCKLOVES1969 How many bands have that many consistently good line-ups over the years?! Shame how Danny Kirwan ended up; so much talent at such a young age. Brilliant song - got to love those lyrics ;)
@Jojoseahorse i was at the whiskey in LA, the night john told us that Jeremy didn't show up. little did we know but he never played with them again, having been 'flirty fished'.. by some children of god'. All albums done by them, up to and including Future Games...is pure genius. i was lucky enough to have gotten a fantastic album 'Jeremy Spencer', with 12 new songs on it, played by the original Fleetwood Mac group, featuring songs Jeremy fronted...im sure it was only issued in the UK.
@CHUCKLOVES1969 Ha ha, "flirty fished" - I heard about that. "I'm a hooker for Christ" indeed. I understand Jeremy is still a member, glad he still finds time to make some music. Thanks for sharing your memory :)

Ya 100% right - Galvestoner420 - ... of course there are many who have only scratches of knowledge about their era's pops (probably they were busy with smoking couldn't pay attention) ... but personally, I think, it all depends on how much ya heart and soul was/is into those tunes ya grew up. I always loved PG's soulful voice and (looks...haha) ... Tata from Budapest
I'm surprised at the amount of people who know NOTHING of this era of the band. Everyone is so familiar with the pop success of the band with Christine, Stevie and Lindsey. I always tell them Peter Green was INCREDIBLE!!! He wrote Black Magic Woman and released it BEFORE Santana, but nobody seems to know that. They all think, "Oh, Carlos Santana wrote that."
@Galvestoner420 PETER GREEN WROTE BLACK MAGIC WOMAN, he named it after Sandra Elsdon his girl friend of that time. She is now a Psychotherapist who works in London.
Holy shit, you just taught me something. My mom is a huge fan of the Stevie Nicks package, but she never told me about this, lol. She probably doesn't know about it either, but man, I feel almost guilty for not having known about it. I wish somebody would have told me sooner... and since you told me that Peter Green wrote "Black Magic Woman," I should tell you that Cachao wrote "Oye Como Va," but I guess you already knew that.
Not only that, you could tell Jimmy Page "borrowed" a lot from Peter Green. The riff for Black Dog was taken from this song. "Since I've been Loving You" is nothing more than a John Bonham infused slow blues British style as mastered by Fleetwood Mac under Peter Green. Personally "If You Let Me Love You" from the Boston Tea Party (vol. 3) is much better.
yeah whole lotta love was totally lifted from you need lovin' by small faces. at least they showed their influences. steve marriot wipes the floor with robert plant though
Shhh, Jimmy Page/ Zep fans lurking around. I stand by my comments on "Black Dog", and "Since I've Been Loving You". Peter Green, and Fleetwood Mac did it better! Random Jimmy Page quotes over the years (post Zeppelin) prove his guilt over the years. Obviously with "Whole Lotta Love" that came directly from Steve Marriot, and the Small Faces, through Willie Dixon's "You Need Love (Lovin')". Robert Plant couldn't hold Steve Marriot's balls to save his life. SM and LZ - Plant = HUGE FAN!
Yep...Led Zepp Is the greatest cover band of all time...Do you know about "Stairway" and "Taurus" by Spirit?!??! (who, to little surprise, toured w/Zepp). Maybe thats why they had a 'curse', to much bad karma.....plus Page was infamously garbage live (yes, we all know there are a few decent live takes floating around out there, but a supposed god should be on all the time, not a few times in the early days). Green owns him...flat out. Shit, Tony Iommi owns him.

Led Zeppelin had unlike F Mac no genius in the group. Fleetwood Mac if Peter Green had stayed with it would have been better than anyone in the 70s.
