I really like this video. I will pass it on to some of the new photographers I know that need a good teaching on understanding F-stops. Thanks Jared, great work.
I wish there was videos like this when I started shooting. Really good work even though I dont really "need" these types of tutorials anymore, these are really golden for the starter shooters out there! Once again, good work Jared and keep it up!
Btw, would be nice to see a Canon shooter to join you doing these videos since specially all the equipment stuff is really Nikon related. Example focus-modes video would be great if someones "translated" it for Canon shooters out there. ;)
how is it that 84 people do not like this? he doesnt lie... he makes it fun... he keeps it simple. im dying to know what those 84 people where looking for when they visited this video. oh well, thanks JP.
I was nodding my head as i was watching this vid from you jared...which means i fully understand aperture and f stops now, thanks to you !! Simple , to the point, and very helpful. Just wish i could lie down in the grass to take test shots like that here, cause if I did, something would bite me....Australia :)
With regards to DoF, isn't it also affected by the distance from the camera? When you shot Kermit, he was relatively close to the camera and hence even at F16 the background is blown out. However, I assume that if he were a handful of meters further, lower f-stops would be needed to preserve the bokeh.
1) Camera to subject distance. Reduce it, lowers the DOF
2) Aperture. F/1.4 less DOF than F/16
3) Focal Length. Longer focal lengths (more zoomed in) compress the backgrounds in photographs. They will give shallow DOF if you select a reasonably low F stop and do not focus at infinity.
4) Subject distance from the background which will be in the photograph. If the background is miles away you will attain more subject isolation.
For some reason Jared, you keep on reminding me of that guy that had that really boring painting show, I can't remember the name. I think it's because of your hair, so similar.
@jimijoe Yes I do agree that he was amazing, but he always put me asleep. I know he was like one of the best, because his shows till play today on TV. Too bad he isn't here with us anymore, he was an inspiration to a lot artist, as long as you didn't fall asleep like I did a lot.
@ziggy149 yea, since I was a little kid. At 5 I had surgery to cut the muscles to re align them so that my eyes would not shake when I look straight on. When I am tired or look to the side they tend to move a lot. I dont see it and I heard on the radio that if you have eye issues like this when your much younger the brain shuts off the receptors so you dont see the shaking.
@JaredPolin I'm always amazed how the brain, and other areas of the body for that matter, can adapt. Anywho, hope to get your attention in the critique section of the forum. Just starting to go through the Lynda.com LR3 essentials course - around 13 hrs long. Just started shooting RAW a couple weeks ago doing some tulip stuff for a local contest - what-ev. Thought I'd enter for S&G's. Played around in camera RAW in Elements and was honestly blown away. I'm ziggy150 on Flickr if ur bored. Ltr
@MCgoogles1000 Oh, ya got me . . . thank god I spelled nystigmus correctly. My life is so much more enriched and correct now that you've taken the time out of your life to point out that I've misspelled a word on a youtube comment. Thanks so much.
@ziggy149 Haha sorry that offended you man but I didn't know what it was and I looked it up and Google corrected it for me. I figured a lot of people wouldn't know what the disease was either, so I would save them the trouble that I had to go through by showing the proper spelling.
Jared's cool and does his thing, Greg is cool and does his thing. I'm not sure they wanted people to go all "fanboy" on each other. Maybe they are corresponding with each other about what they are going to post and coordinate accordingly. These guys did a lot of jobs/shoots together. Jared still mentions Greg in his videos with no negative intonation in his voice. People are much too quick to turn trollish with complete disregard to even a modest amount of civility. I think this is a good complement to the greg video, actually greg talks theory, the fro shows using examples. man how do i which you guys still worked together.
yo Jared, i have the Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens mounted on a D90 .. and even it the lowest f/ stops i cant get the background washed out at all .. how can you explain that?? and how can i get the bokeh effect??
@WATSABI0 with your current lens you would have to zoom to 60mm and up imo to get good out of focus elements. i would get a faster lens like the 50 1.8 or 35 1.8 as a next lens btw :)
@WATSABI0 yeah, aperture controls the depth of field. lower the number, the stronger (shallow) the depth of field is. you'll see with your new 50mm... no science really, well... none that I know off? 0_o
Kermit the frog got kicked in the gob for messing around with miss piggy he looked up her dress and said what a mess as he popped out his little green willy
Everyone please get off jared's a** about the Greg stuff. Both Jared and Greg are both great, and who cares if they posted a video on the same topic. It's different teaching styles. Jared I love your videos as well as greg's keep up the great work!
@aleksandersandstrom funny thing is I recorded this on Sunday and the cut the lawn on Monday. I recorded a few more SSP videos and you will see the cut grass lol.
You can get a DOF calculator for your smart phone. Also, different lens sizes (mm) have different DOF effects. Additionally the distance to the subject also effects the DOF.
@MayteRockz I stopped watching Jared's videos a couple of weeks ago. I watched this one too see if it was true that Jared was copying the Depth of field part of Greg's video...Which Jared did!
@JaredPolin it's pretty weird that both yo and greg make a video about the same thing! competition much??
Nonetheless I love this video as much as Greg's, this really shows what Greg is showing with his drawings. He gets its more technical whilst you show some great examples.
Jared version is more simple and straight to the point, Greg is more technical. Pls don't make this like Jared vs Greg = Mcdonalds vs Kentucky Fried Chicken and don't put gasoline into fire!
@atamola How is it a rip off? Jared is showing a practical example to show how one aspect affects the pictures and the other is a technical intro to exposure concepts in general.
Whats next, "Oh Greg just posted a video that has a camera in it and this has a camera in it, this is a total rip-off!"
People need to quit with the greg stuff. If you hate Jared and love Greg then go post in Greg's videos and stop watching Jared. Or you could watch both and only post constructive comments.
Great video Jared, I'm just beginning, but I'm glad I can still manage some shallow depth of field at f4, I think it is just a matter of the distance from your subject and the distance from the background. :)
Great tutorial! The D7K is looking real nice but is a D300s better? I know it wasn't meant to replace it but it looks like it might have not only done that for the D90 but the D300s.
i have canon 100mm f 2.8 i was shot some pictures with it at 2.8 for 6 people together 30 ft away but they not all sharp what kind of setup you suggest to shot at 2.8 and have all of them sharp i would appreciate your help
Thanks for an awesome video. Pleace, do more videos like this about the basics of photography. I and I´m sure more ppl out there needs to learn how to get our exposure right.
I would vere mutch appreciate videos were you show us how to do- the metering (what setting dows what etc.),- shutterspeed settings (were to use wich shutterspeed),- ISO settings (how to know what ISO setting we need to use and what happens with the picture),- how to efectively use wich focuspoint/focuspoints.
Very good exercise to understand how the F stops work.. I did it myself a few months ago with beer bottles, the first one close to me and the last one far from me.. With the lowest F stop (2.0 in that case) you can only see the first bottle.. As you increase the F stop you start to see all the bottles...
Yes, Greg just did a very similar video. I think Jared saw that video and thought, "I can do that better". And you know what? It is better. I miss Greg, but Jared is more able right now to show us visually what he wants us to learn.
Dude, someone should take a photograph of your afro!

WATSABI0 9 months ago
@WATSABI0 if your lens is at 18mm, its a lil bit harder to get/see bokeh or out of focus spots. try zoom the lens to about 50mm F/4 and try that :)
tookyourcookies 9 months ago
@WATSABI0 with your current lens you would have to zoom to 60mm and up imo to get good out of focus elements. i would get a faster lens like the 50 1.8 or 35 1.8 as a next lens btw :)
minutes2midnite 9 months ago
@minutes2midnite + @tookyourcookies :
i noticed this too .. and actually i have pre-ordered the new 50mm f/1.8 G lens
but what makes me wonder, what is the logic or the science behind it ??
isn't depth of field controlled by how open the lens is?? am i missing something ??
WATSABI0 9 months ago
@WATSABI0 yeah, aperture controls the depth of field. lower the number, the stronger (shallow) the depth of field is. you'll see with your new 50mm... no science really, well... none that I know off? 0_o
tookyourcookies 9 months ago
@tookyourcookies lol .. lemme rephrase it .. why do i have to zoom in to get a shallow DOF?? how zooming came in the matter??
WATSABI0 9 months ago
@WATSABI0 because DOF is determine by focal length and aperture. 200mm @ f2.8 have a shallower DOF than 14mm f2.8.

Yep. I already know how F-Stops work, thanks to your earlier vids. Honestly though, I never get tired of watching these.
Plus it's good for newer subscribers who didn't watch your older vids

I don't understand why people thumbs-down his videos. If you thumb it down, say why so others could see and let him improve his content in the future

Hi Jared!
