We had a Leonberger who was so well behaved the neighborhood kids would play with him and ride on his back. He was off lined trained and certified. His training was done by a friend who was a USAF dog trainer. He was trained to obey hand and verba; commands & signals fro us and his trainer only. He was also trained to protect and would not let anyone who seemed agressive close to my wife unless she said it was OK. One of the best dogs I ever had. I miss him tons. He loved the pool...LOL
Would socialising them early on help to prevent the constant barking. I might be moving to large house in suburbs but people still walk past. I would be fine with hufing, but barking at anyone who passes might annoy neighbours.. please reply as really would like a leonberger once settled :)
@DefeatedDreamer Hi. It is simply a matter of training. This video was for comedy effect really. Normal behavior is yes, I wanted them to warn of people on the property, but the barking is under command. A simple 'thank you' and they would stop. (The little cross breed Holly however could be a little disobedient with this, but the Leo's, great ;)
i love big dogs. i have an alaskan malamute myself who is probably going to be about 50kg, but that's probably nothing compared to these guys. how much do they weigh?
My Leo Bella guards the house all day. SHe has an extra large doggy door and patrols the perimeter at will. She sleeps in the hall between the kids bedrooms. She is such a love, but dont come on our property unless she knows you or you are with one of the family. She gives me piece of mind.
My male pitbull likes to lay on the back of his big chair and look out the windows. He's a great watchdog but a guard dog...not so much. He would show the burglar where the valuables are then help him carry them out lol. :D
I've recently discovered this breed and yours are making me want one! Can't get one right now but what is their execrsise needs like? Can they do alright in condo life?
@MsChocolate99 I think you'll find it is just a dog thing. Most medium to large sized Dogs do it. They call it a 'play bow' its kind of a preparation to pounce, in a fun way ;) On such large dogs tho it is the cutest thing.
leonbergers are amazing i have one hes eight and a half years and about 12.5 stone thier great dogs i always get people in the street saying hes massive lol i love them
One of my leonberger is 13 months and he just actws like that. But not the intense barking, just the watching and the huffing. But it's so adorable and I love him :3. Of course we keep it to a minimum and he's now only wary for strange people and sometimes huff but nothing more. We found a fitting name for him: Aslan xD
holy hell that is a big dog! i must admit i thurt of getting a rotty or doberman but man this dog just sound like it would tare off your arm with no efford at all!
@Vakrian no they, ALONG with rotties and dobies are the sweetest of dogs though my personal fave is the leo, please do not go about stereotyping breeds and do your homework
bloody hell mate i thought mine was big at 7 months old but the one that jumps up at 35 seconds is huge how old he mine is a female called ruby and is 7 mnths old and weighs 54kgs
Some people would be frightened at the sight of roughly 400 pounds of dog staring through the window at them. Idiot that I am, I'd probably try to hug them no matter how much they barked.
I took my dog to our local dog park today and saw my first Leonburger! She was 8 months, and played like a little puppy! I loved how black her face was!!!!!
@winteronfire At 8 months Leonbergers are still very much puppies. They really don'y mature until 2-3yrs. Bear my male Leonberger will turn 3 in a few weeks and he is just now reaching a mature form. Leonbergers are known for their black mask. Males should always have the mask but females usually have less. A mature female who still has a full mask is highly desireable to breeders.
Our Leo Bella does the same thing. She sits in out bay window and if there is trouble (could be an old lady) she runs around the perimeter. She works all day and sleeps all night LOL. Best dogs eva
@urmother65 My Leo just figured this out. He knows now that he can open the slider, I also live in an area with lots of deer & we have a lot of people that walk in an open area behind us. Problem is that I also have a younger Kangal that learned from him & she is much more the protector. Being a Kangal she has great eyesight & hearing, so even if a hawk lands in the yard she is out the door quickly. Nice to know she is so protective but she is a handfull.
LOL, My Bella, a 100lb female Leo does the same exact thing only she actually sits up in the window, what a sight. She is great with my kids. Its almost like she barks because she wants to go out and meet people/dogs.
It all comes down to your 'pack'. If the dog in question is not very dominant, by exercising dominance routines they will not feel it is their responsibility. Since this vid was made, samson the smaller dog has stopped being territorial, and Ludo the big one is still going. We are working to futher downgrade Ludos pack position to reduce his guarding behavior. Although I don't want him to stop, just have it under my command more. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching ;)
Hah! That's just like my Leo Max. He drives us crazy for barking at the window. Still, we don't get many casual callers at the front door, that's for sure. I never tell people that he would lick them to death if they came in!
my border collie doas that but scarier, but they sound just like my lab, she is still learning to bark but i should get her one of those funny jackets
He was very fluffy. We got worried for a while. His coat has grown out now thankfully. Still a very thick coat mind. He was about 9 months old when this was shot.
As a body guard? Definitely -- I think someone would have to shoot my female to get to me or my husband.
Home security? No way. My male *might* sit on a burglar and lick him to death long enough for the cops to show up.
Price: we tell people the price of the Tahoe, what we spend on food, the vet bill the day they decided to do battle with a porcupine... and then we chuckle as they walk away with glazed-over eyes.
@bbell2000 I have to agree. I have a Leongerger, Kangal, Great Pyrenees, and Pomeranian (of course she is the Alpha Dog). I don't want to think about what we have spent but a large diesel pick up truck with canopy of course, large suv, a couple of surgeries for luxating patella (the Pomeranian-terrible breeder to thank), & yes the homestead of several fenced acres. All worth it.
Mine too, he sounds and looks intimidating but show him some affection and you have his attention. If I really wanted protection, I would have gotten a Caucasian Ovtcharka, although very loving and loyal to their "flock", They will absolutely not tolerate someone or animal they do not know into their domain.
