This song was recorded in my mind since my early childhood, and I spent years trying to know who was the singer and what was the song !! All what I know was the music and that there was a bride and dead groom, with no lyrics, no song title, and no singer name! Even playing it on a keyboard didn't make anyone knows what was it! I'm SO THANKFUL to finally find it today! It was in my head for more than 30 years, searching for it was so difficult! So beautiful! Thank you! Mercy! You have no idea :)
@shannonb082905 Well, I never said it was a Christmas song either. And this has absolutely nothing to do with "Les Dogs" or The Comic Strip. The video is taken from a TV show from 1979. The show was officially just called "Kate", but it's usually called the "Christmas show" or "Christmas special" since it was broadcast on December 28, 1979.
I always imagine it to be different, when I imagine it like a video... I imagine the bride singing this, looking at the list of people they invited. I imagine her threatening each person at gunpoint until the truth comes out. I then imagine her going to shoot them, and then killing herself after. I imagine the coroners finding the fetus, and being distraught. Then I imagine the wife and Rudi in heaven, with the child. That's just how I see it in my mind. But this version was okay, I guess...
this is some crazy shyt. i've never listened to her before, i am watching this because big boi from outkast said this was his all time favorite song. i still don't know how i feel about it lol...
Haha, its been a year since I last commented on this video. It was when I'd just discovered Kate's work. Now I own all of her albums and I've tried to watch every single performance and video of hers. Her work is still awe-inspiring to me.
Thanks Kate! And thanks to the uploader of this video since us younger people werent around to see this amazing stuff at the time.
Kate is a genius with her composition... music, lyrics and the way she moves in time to her music, not to mention a wonderful and eccentric actress. What a heroine! <3
After watching this 5 times, I managed to stop looking at her and noticed Al Murphy and Brian Bath having a great time in the background - that's pretty rockin' for a mime!
The Uffington White Horse in Cloudbusting, the changing colours in the background in TMWTCIHE, the changing seasons in Sensual World, the lightbulb in Them Heavy People, Peter Vaughan in Experiment IV, a candle next to Smurf's guitar in Rocket Man...all such lovely deft little touches that make watching her videos even more fun.
In Cloudbusting, the rainmaker machine was designed by the guy who designed the Alien monster and sets...Geiger?
I just found out about the candle in the chair in Rocket Man and Alan Murphy (I was reading up on the references in Moments of Pleasure). And I've been rediscovering his guitar work. I remember trying to follow his guitar solo from Violin when I was a teen with no talent. What a brilliant guitarist and such a shame he died so young.
haha y'know I was looking at the band trying to see if they WERE the proper band but I couldn't make out their faces. I noticed the guitarists are jigging along to a jolly old tune. Which guitarist is which?
Wow. So beautiful. We don't get television like this nowadays. BBC used to have a paternalistic attitude with regard to their programming. They showed us what we should see. Now they are flirting with the sewer.
Been on a Kate Bush kick for about three hours now.. I love her and think this is about the most freaky thing. I laughed through most of it. To have put this song and the production together 30 years ago is amazing, and I am sure very controversial
The live version of this is a lot better, with her infamous "wardrobe malfunction". Midge Ure later (at an award night for Kate) made the comment she had tried to get her tits out for Prince Charles.
The song is about a man who gets shot right after his wedding. The bride (Kate) gets angry and wants revenge, so she search for the killer, find him and shoot him. After she has killed him she commits suicide and when they examine her body they find out she was pregnant. So four people get killed in the song, the groom, the killer, the bride and her unborn child.
The song is inspired by the film "The Bride Wore Black" by Francois Truffaut from 1967.
Quentin Tarantino sure missed a trick when he made Kill Bill; this song is obviosly perfect as they were both inspired by the same thing! Actually, this song is too great to be featured in that movie.
@Symphonyofflowers - and there are the nuances that only Kate can give to the song, as well. The quasi-sexual overtones of the bride finally coming for her groom, the inversion of the wedding vows in the invocation of the funeral rites (ashes to ashes)....she's so intensely talented.
@Symphonyofflowers The film by Francois Truffaut is basically an adaptation of the American 'noir' novel "The Bride Wore Black" by Cornell Woolrich (or William Irish) where the 'widow' kills five people instead of one. The French original title of the film is "La Mariée était en Noir."
@HadleyStreet Are you serious? Does Kate need to make this more of a documentary than it already is for you to understand the rather 'easy to follow' storyline!?! Haha
Kill Bill was inspired by an old Japanese movie, Lady Snowblood. And Meiko Kaji, the leading actress there is also the singer of the song "Urami bushi", used in Kill Bill :)
@CynthiaJFinnegan No, as I said Paddy is playing both the priest and the killer. He had to wear the priest costume outside the "killer" costume because he didn't have time to change.
I also simply obsessed with KATE. Everything she does and performs is simply magic and full of perfection. How can someone be so incredible, talented, beautiful, sensual and sexy at once. Her husband is my absolute hero!
OMFG this is amazing. I never knew this exsisted. THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this. Thank you for the lyrics at the end of the song. I have been trying to figure them out for 17 years!!!!!
