I played drums for Randy Hansen for 27 years and toured with noel Redding and played with mitch and buddy it would be a honor to play drums for jeff !!!
Once, in an interview JB said that he used to play with the lightest strings he could find...0.08 ! Then he met Jimmy Hendrix who told him ...''These are RUBBER BANDS ! You can't play with rubber bands ! GET THESE OFF HERE !"
Ιndeed so ! Hendrix wrote terrific melodies and talented singers like M. Waldon can really help to appreciate that melodic element of his music more, as JH was rather limited as a singer.
Does anyone have some further information to Jeff's right hand playing technique? Is he doing alternate picking (just) with his thumb or just doing down strokes? Thanks!
I'm in the same generation too LHB and we heard some real masters inour lifetime, but somewhere on the outskirts of town, in a back room somewhere a little kid is ripping it up better than anybody. It's the way it's always been. Johnny Weissmuller set swimming records they said would never be broken and within a decade a 12 year old surpassed him. Some kids now get old school and great music. Don't be surprised if one day there is a new guitar god we don't know of yet. But Jeff Beck is amazing.
Jeff Beck's modesty, and willingness to put his staggering virtuosity in service to the music rather than his own ego, never ceases to amaze me. One of the greatest recorded performances of "Little Wing" at least in terms what's happening on guitar. Can anybody still do this sort of thing, or is it a dying art? As somebody who was born in the 50s, I don't see anybody who can carry on the tradition.
@OriginalLHB You're right. Once Jeff is gone... that's it. He's the last of the true great innovators on guitar, that plays with soul, feeling, & personality.
@OriginalLHB Eric Johnson has some spectacular Jimi covers, as well as his own music which is amazing. I consider Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck among the great guitar gods of the present. Also Eric Clapton, and if you haven't heard of him, look up Eric Gales Jimi Hendrix covers on the 'Tube too, he turns them into explosive extended jam sessions basically. Incredible presence on guitar, Gales is...
Beautiful version! I like it better than the Hendrix version. Hendrix was also pretty sloppy on stage probably 'cause he was drugged out of his mind when he performed. Beck is actually getting better with age.
@dsm811: Thx 4 pointing that out. Makes sense because they were friends. There are a couple vids of them playing together. They were competitive -- great fun for the audience!
@itzed Professional set-up; no guitar will sound or play correctly without a good set-up. it may be the most important yet overlooked investment a guitar player can make. Roller nut with double rollers on the treble strings. Locking tuners with graduated heights eliminating the need for a string tree, and also eliminating 2 to 4 points of friction. I would also recommend going up to a .49-.11 string gauge if you're going to be doing this type of playing. Hope this helps.
5 minutes of Jeff on top form in my very humble opinion is better than 10 minutes of Jimi on top form. I love their guitar playing very much, both exciting innovative inspirational players and then some, Jimi was mental but to me Jeff is a fucking lunatic. Lunacy wins!!! ;-) wibble wibble wibble!!!
It can't get better than this. Jeff Beck is one of my all time favs. Mysteriously he never ages, is always on top of his gig. His tone, phrasing, choice of notes, chords, and melodies? You're truly in analog guitar heaven. Thanks for posting this and making my day. :-)
@seasidejimmy - its a harmonic i think, looks like he's floating his finger on the G string (3rd thinnest string) at around the 3rd fret, plucks it hard and whammies the crap out of it, lol.
Will be seeing this band October 25 in Edmonton. Wish i would have been at some of those Vinnie and Tal, and Darrel and Imelda shows too. Great stuff from Jeff Beck in the later years!
I will never, ever sell my vintage Fender Strat. And shit like this explains why. You just can not get that tone from any other guitar. I know -- because I've tried. I've owned Jacksons and Hamers and all sorts of custom made instruments over the years... but nothing sounds like an old Fender. They're just... I dunno... magical or something.
Is that Narada Michael Walden? He hit on my sister once. Son of a bitch. Always puttin' flowers on his drums. He's great, I just prefer Vinnie and that lovely Tal Wilkenfeld. She can play.
@eqsmooth so he hit on your sister once and that makes him a son of a bitch? Eeuh that's what grown ups do you know... hitting on each other... Nothing wrong with that bro...
@firelement Narada Michael Walden. Go check out Mahavishnu Orchestra Visions of The Emerald Beyond. He replaced Billy Cobham. Probably my favorite drumming album...
He's sooo good, simply beautiful. By the way the "Tags" have Fender Telecaster, J B is playing a Fender Stratocaster ( his favorite model) as did Jimi.
Great to see this. I was there too, enjoying the superb weather. I'd been on a 2 wk blues trail, Chicago / Memphis / Clarksdale / New Orleans, with music all the way, and had to fly home the next day. I couldn't believe my luck having Jeff Beck (+ Robert Plant) cap a great trip. You did a good job capturing a beautiful moment.
Beautiful - thanks for posting! One note....always show the guitarist's hands...especially when it's Jeff-freaking-Beck! Narada nailed the vocals, and as usual, Jeff makes it sing.
