  • Haven't listened to this in along time. Big Mama was something else.

  • Absolutely classic blues from a true original. Don't see any talent like this coming along today.

  • well what can one say to this amazing tune, smooth, easy and just pure brilliant.

  • Oh My Goodness ya got to be at least 23 to lissen to this!

  • that rooster man . . .

  • @feelslikethemovies you're so right, I got a chicken skin ...

  • YEP! All the way back to Leadbelly 1800's!

  • real smooth ♡

  • c'est vraiment magnifique!!!!!!!!! ont est loin de nos pétillantes starlettes d'aujourd'hui

  • Whoooooooooaaaaaa Yeaaaah! Bauk Bauk Bauk!

  • Whooooo!!!

  • first i heard this song was by the Rolling Stones, then i heard Big Mama do it and was blown away further than when i heard it by the Stones, she sings the hell out of it, she been high on my list since 1965, just listen to her do Ball and Chain, sorry Janis, i love you to, but she tears it up.........freak

  • hey check ,search bolder gazet van antwerpen

  • here it is! thx for uploading...

  • I'm 63 and never heard of Big Mama until today's trawl of youtube jazz - what the hell have I been doin' and listenin' to all these years? I love the blues (eg Sonny Rollins & Brownie McGhee) but how did I miss this and her? I'm converted and she is now on the list. Sorry Mama!

  • @seeyouyabass, I had the pleasure in about 1960 to see Sonny & Brownie rehearsing "Rooster" in the corner of a sound booth at a recording studio where I worked.. I didn't know who they were at the time. Duh.

  • @35mm35 I, too, had the privilege of seeing Sonny & Brownie live 40 years after you did and I'm sure they are as good now as then. Many blues artists just get better with age! It was in a small, intimate room in a small Scottish town, a million miles from the 'Delta', but they were incredible and obviously felt relaxed and amongst friends. Just wish Big Momma was on the same bill!

  • @royalandancient, so they got to Scotland. if I'm not mistaken Sonny and Brownie are no longer around. You might want to Google them. YT also has a number of videos. [Unfortunately, it's hard to concentrate on writing a comment because YT or maybe aol has chosen to run audio testimonials while I'm typing. Would love to continue talking about the blues.]

  • Nice.

  • Yeah! You make them rooster noises Momma!

  • Raw, gutbucket blues. She was the genuine article and sang it/told it her way. Love these clips. For those of us that never got to see her, the live footage is all that's left. Thanks for the post.

  • L O V E is MAMA Thornton

  • blues is life and big mama is the godmother of the blues

  • This is sending chills down my spine. Damn, the blues is awesome.

  • Yeah!!!!!!

  • Anyone just starting loving this lady, might like Rosetta Tharpe; (see vid pHKZVJraSpc

  • Is that not B. B. King? Sounds a lot like Lucille. Who is it?

  • @ianjohnsonnz "B.B. King and Muddy Waters played at this concert with Big Mama" ^^

  • all these mick jagger stories remind me of the time the stonesplayed follow-up to james brown on i think, maybe ed sullivan? up until then mick just stood there. after watching james brown, when mick, much to the bands suprise, came out jumping, a legend(jumping jack flash) was born. those of us watching felt sorry for for his herky-jerky jive, but, who knew? people liked it.

  • this song made me sit back in my chair slow down and just listen.

  • I been looking for the rendition of Ball and Chain that was preformed by Big Mama at this very same show.It is my favorite rendition of the song and I used to have a copy of it but unfortunately lent the album to someone and never received it back.I sure do miss listening to it's perfection.

  • of course she's fantastic, you find me one person named Big Mama that ain't great at something

  • I want to dance with my soulmate to this song

  • 22歳の頃京都に居た時、このアルバムを買った。今でも持っている。

  • @nakayamakibi: Yep!

  • I was listening to some blues tonight and thought about all the great Blues Festivals in Three Rivers. This one is for Mr. Bues. Marty Spauding

  • She is the female equivalent of Bob Hite of Canned Heat - they were both born to sing the blues !

  • Why are people arguing over which "genre" is better? Doesn't it come down to preference? I believe it was Jimi Hendrix who said something to the effect that all these different kinds of music are just different peoples' interpretations of their own kind of blues. I can't remember the exact quote, but I think what he was getting at was that jazz, rocknroll, whatever... it's all just a reflection of whatever kind of blues the people playing it are feeling.

  • great

  • THIS LADY WAS WHAT WE CALL DOWN SOUTH BLACK CAT BOON.

  • Another classic big mama. Blues at its perfection. Thanks for posting.

  • And it sounds so simple. How do they do it?

  • Play this one when you're about to close the deal in the bedroom, lads. You'll get the job done the way you're supposed to--and she'll even offer to make breakfast the next day.

    :-)

  • @ForTheHalfLifeMovie

these young 13-15 yerasold kids all the time..."oh, im so young and i hate justin bieber and i love this old music sooo, and im sooo young but i love this soooo, isnt it incredible?"

  • I don't understand how people hate blues.... It's the best!

  • the Stones version is a classic with Brian Jones on slide but this version is COOLER...

  • like this song and the ones to keep it up.

  • Leaves the Rolling Stones version in the dust!

  • WILL YOU BE MY BIG MAMA?????

  • @lesnwh I can be your big daddy... LOL just kidding. Big Mama FTW!

  • 300 pounds of joy

  • She pulled that one deep from within her soul daddy!!! Yeahhh!

  • I was lucky enough to see and hear her live at a small club in San Francisco, years ago. It was late at night,, not many people, but a just a number of "working girls" there to see her. She sang this song.....one of my fondest memories. I must say the way she sang it live was even better than this...and the comradery between her and the ladies was something very special. The way she looked at them and said...".I"ve got a little red rooster....to laayyyzzzy to crow for dawn"

  • I remember seeing BMT in a small club where you were almost on stage, what there was of it. Fantastic performer

  • @scgypsy

you had seen her live on stage?

oh my god you had so much luck.

i will never see her live. so sad

  • Thanks to Willie Dixon for one of his many great tunes. A fine version here.

  • Well said I must say. Keep listening the blues only get better with age.

  • Now, that is the blues..Big Mama Thornton.. Sing it girl..Fantastic!

  • hell yeah!!!!

  • I have been a fan of this song for sooo very long... this LADY does it the best...CUDOS!

  • Mick Jagger ought to go to Willie Mae Thornton's grave in L.A. and to Chester "Howlin Wolf" Burnett's grave in Cook county Illinois and tell them both Thank You!

  • Jagger said thank you to Howlin' Wolf on numerous occasions. F.e. by taking him to a tv-show in LA. To much hilarity the presentor kept on referring to him as Mr Howlin'. It's on Youtube.

  • Comment removed

  • @mta415 He probably has...remember that the Stones got Howlin Wolf on as a guest at their earliest TV appearances when the public...certaiunly the white public in US and UK had either forgotten him or never heard of him. The Stones started as a blues band who crusaded for their heroes, never thinking they would themselves become rich and famous - how many young bands have got that dedication???

  • @wingandaprayer "how many young bands have got that dedication???" very few. I've seen Rap dudes pay homage to George Clinton and James Brown but that's about it...

  • @mta415 Mick Jagger kissed their feet many times. There's a great vid of Mick sitting on the floor modestly while watching the Wolf play. He loved these artists more than most -- as did Keith and Ronnie. No disrespect from the Stones when it comes to the true greats.

  • @mta415

10 maybe 15 years ago in Dallas there was a lady radio DJ who's nom d'radio was Ranger Rita, and I swear she knew everything there was to know about old timey country, R & R, blues and R & B. She used to have a (very tongue in cheek) feature in her show called "The Rolling Stones Rip Off Hour" during which she played "all of those songs that the black artists stole from the Rolling Stones".

  • She also "The Magic Time Warp", Once a week she brought in a sack of pennies dated from 1948 to 1962. She would randomly pull a coin out of the sack and what ever year it was, all the music that night would be from that year. Her motto was "Nothin' after '62 and NO stereo" ........gee, I wish she was still on.

  • @mta415 I'm sure he did on more than one occasion. Have to say that the Stones always name checked their influences, Chuck/Muddy/Howling etc. They introduced America to its own music in a way

  • @TV225TS1 you're quite right, quite.

  • @TV225TS1 you are right on point ! i'm sick of hearing the bullshit from the peanut gallery..fact is Wolf loved the the Stones..he realized what good they actually did for him & others, giving them a full on resurgence in the 60's & 7o's..hell Clapton payed for wolf's tombstone.. now Led Zep's whole 2nd album is a butcher job of Willie Dixons stuff & they got bit in the ass for it & rightfully so.. but the stones always gave more than credit, where it was due.

  • @mta415 i sure no he aint got the restraint

  • @mta415 Nobody needs to tell Jagger or The Stones to give thanks - they re-presented the blues to a mass audience when it was lagging, and ignored by black audiences almost completely. The Stones insisted that The WOLF appear on the Ed Sullivan Show with them, when they first got seen in the US by anyone! That was something they had to have a nerve to do, but they meant to credit the blues legend. I've seen The Stones tour Prince and The Meters (aka Neville Bros), to get them heard.

  • @mahatmacote true, true. It was only in a small segment of the black populace in the North but very strong in the South. Most of the Blacks didn't buy the records due to economics but they'd give their last to see Mr. Morganfield or Willie Mae live at the local Juke Joint! Music is not made for one segment of people, I'm black and I wouldn't cater my music to any group or race. Plus we are only 9-12% of the population so we wouldn't make a dent anyway when you look at the big pic. Good post.

  • @mta415 Music is for all the races indeed, though when blues is respected as part of 'black history' in the US, I think it's vital to recognize the advent and influence, and characters like these. There is an element, in rap, who revel in racial disenchantment and sing disenfranchised lyrics - but I think they know there's a market & money in it. Not to forget the sexism! More harm than good there, in my opinion.

Musicians often got ripped off , The Stones too, by record companies & managers.

  • It was funny to see Muddy mention first coming to the UK early 60's, & the audience sat silently listening to him. He thought the audience didn't like him - then found out it was just total respect for his playing. The etiquette was not to respond during the song, but wait til the end of each rendition before showing appreciation! Wish I'd been at those shows, but at least we have these great vids.

  • @mahatmacote And Stevie Ray Vaughn

  • @mta415 He played with Howlin' Wolf personally so he probably told him. The Rolling Stones pretty well acknowledged their influences.

  • @benarobinson this is true. The Stones gave big thanks to Chester on multiple occasions.

  • I agree; I am kinda part of the younger generation, but this kinda music I love and it owns. It's deep, passionate and gritty and straight from my south; down home and kuntry. You can just feel this kinda music; I also love Sam Cooke's version too.

  • Sam Cooke has a version of this?!? is it on here??

  • Yes it it; just do a search.

  • It don't sound like this--her's is straight out of a thousand nights spent singing in Juke-joints....I love Sam but his version is a Done Deal--her's is RAW.and Bleeding..

  • @ForTheHalfLifeMovie we dont care about your age , fuck your mother

  • @SunAriesMoonCancer Blues gets boring after a CD or two... I really prefer jazz.

  • How about you take your opinion, pack it up into a bag and take it where someone actually cares. Leave the blues to the big boys

  • @peterlloyd93 How about you shutting your fucking mouth? :) Jazz > Blues. Period.

  • @killthepixelnow HaHa...you said Jazz. Fail.

  • @killthepixelnow - Does a bit. Really great in short sharp spurts, then you need a change of pace.

  • @killthepixelnow you dont know shit jazz hmmm

  • @SunAriesMoonCancer

I'm dying laughing at ur comment!!!

  • Thank you, this version is the best!

  • chicken scat, yes! this version is THE ONE.

  • Right now I feel myself sittin' in a nice little club I used to love, a couple shots of Jack Daniels in front of me, and I am lost in blue heaven, thank you mama, ~RIP

  • She goes beyond anything I could have imagined, even after I discovered blues in the late 1960s. Her and Albert King. Thank God we have them!

  • DAMN!!!!! Her version is even better than Howlin' Wolf's original and Etta James's version. I didn't think such a thing was possible. Big Mama sounds like Saturday Night and Sunday morning;raw, raunchy. and sexy. Big Mama Thornton & Etta James are in my top 5 favorite blues women. Janis Joplin is cool too-"I need a man to love" & "Turtle Blues", which she wrote, are gutbucket masterpieces.(If nothing else, we can love her for buying Bessie Smith a headstone.)

    THANKS!!!!

  • I'm tellin' ya... this is the shit. I knew Big Mama was bad, but I wasn't ready for this here--not like this. Like you say... it's Sunday morning and Saturday night all mixed together. What a voice!!

  • Damn straight it doesn't get better than this! Plus you've got to say that she was great at picking the right musicians to work with her.

  • This music makes me want to scream and cry with ecstasy

  • oh my God!!!!!!! give me a double shot of jack black and a beer chaser and a smoke and leave me alone and let me cry in my beer and be happy , that my big mama talking to me

  • Yeah, she sure can cook it

  • i,ve loved the blues my entire life, and big mama is one of my earliest memories of real delta blues, let,s not forget that despite critics she is the main driving forces that made janis a star

  • i would have liked to have seen janis joplin and big mama sing together. what a concert that would be.

  • LOVE BIG MAMA

  • great!!! big mama knew how to do it.

  • This chick is simple fantasic, awesom! Great!!!! The best of women blues!!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!

  • incredible songg¡¡ esto no es que suene, es que acaricia el aire...

  • PS-Oops!(Janis Joplin) I agree the pop stars of today don't come close to holding a candle to Big Mama Thornton - I'd never heard of her until I found this video while looking for versions of 'Little Red Rooster'. Big Mama Thornton moves to top with Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin next in line as my female performers. Thans for introducing me to Big Mama Thornton! -L.
