“When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”
John met the success in the first '70 'cause his speedness (never seen before in those years). Then grown a name from U.S. called Pat Metheny whose diminished his popularity.
@TheTranslator100 Me too. That album is one of the few I had that I almost wore out on my old turntable ! John's guitar just eat's everything in sight ! Its funny, you hear him speak and he's a quiet, nice guy, smiling, and then he plugs in and his guitar goes from a butterfly-humming bird to a carnivore rampage and then ends up wailing at the moon. That was when I learned instrumentalists can better portray emotions than vocalists. His emotional range on the instrument is incredible.
@Pan3405 , I am not a fan of speed for speeds sake, I just think that if one likes it, then here's one of the virtuosos that does it so well. I suppose you could say the same for Vai or Malsteem. Personally I like players that can do it all and express a wide range of emotions for most listening, like Steve Hackett or Jeff Beck, but hey, sometimes its just a thrill to watch one of these speedsters blow the doors off ! JM can do slow too, but his fans like the fast stuff, so he indulges them.
it is such a joy to watch john mclaughlin play. of all the guitar players with their over indulgent solo bits, this guy had measure, melody, and rhythm down like no one else, and so many styles and great solos as well. the most underrated guitar virtuoso, ever.
He plays faster than I can think . That scares me !!! LOL !!! He has been scaring the fertilizer out fo me since Between Nothingness and Eternity and I quite enjoy it !
For such a spiritual man how can he play like such a monster !!! What ever happened to his guru, Sri Chinmoy ? I think I remember now, John's guitar ate him during a solo !!!
Kudos also to his able sidemen ! Huzzah ! They keep up with John very well and that is no mean feat !
@videocanone Why is playing fast sooo important?! Playing less notes is much more interwesting i find it boring to listen to.. he does always the same tricks Whether he plays acoustic or electric
@Pan3405 "he does always the same tricks Whether he plays acoustic or electric"
The question is, can YOU do those same tricks? If you could, or even got close, I doubt you'd be making the same crass comments on every single McLaughlin video on youtube.
Maybe I'll run through all the Al Di Meola youtube videos and see if you're posting the same inane shit there as well lol
@TheTranslator100 I can't and I dont'want to.. Al di Meola is a total different artist! If You can't hear and see that then i'm wondering if You've got something in your ears!
@Pan3405 "Al di Meola is a total different artist!"
True, but Al is criticized just as much, if not MORE, than McLaughlin for excessive use of speed just for the sake of it, which was my point. Maybe you have something in your brain that suppresses your comprehension skills.
"If You can't hear and see that "
You can't even comprehend simple English, you fucking illiterate moron, so how can I take anything you say regarding these artists more seriously than a grain of salt?!?
@TheTranslator100 ive had several argues with that jerk called pan something. my god: when i said john was great he told me "are you gay". fckn bad person,,,
@TheTranslator100 Soo.... than You shut up.. and let me keep my opinion.. It's a free world!! However Wikileaks shows the world how ignorant US people can be.. And guess what...You showed it also my dear friend!!
It is your opinion that McLaughlin is a no talent type of guy who just plays fast. It is my opinion that your observations lack merit and credibility, and are merely based on personal taste that has no correlation to McLaughlin's capabilities as a guitarist/musician. So there you go, the right to exercise freedom of speech...
@keo774 I stop.. because everytime I have to react on messages like yours I also have to listen to this piece of gay music.. Soo this is my last respond..
@TheTranslator100 me ? for "have you got a serious mental illness?" i meant that pan3405 had broken balls with his comments. anyway the argue is closed, i think....
From my experience, people who use terms like "gay" in reference to anything but homosexuality, lack the eloquence and articulation skills to express themselves in a more intelligent manner. In other words, you sound like a dumb-ass lol
@Pan3405 John plays with precision and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic intelligence. hes not only fast he's a genius.
and NOW, since we all know you are an idiot for commenting always crap about john's videos, why dont you shot up and stop annoying us with your stupid comments?
@videocanone "He has been scaring the fertilizer out fo me since Between Nothingness and Eternity and I quite enjoy it !"
Damn, that's my favorite Mahavishnu album. I remember as a kid, I saved my lunch money and bought a used Hagstrom 12 sting and learned some of the parts on Sister Andrea. I tried the intro to Dream as well, but it sounds like open tuning with a capo or something, can't figure it out.
Technically, this is a full acoustic performance for him- even the magnetic pickup is floating and not mounted on the top as far as I can tell-so its "amplified acoustic".
"amplified acoustis" it's a magnetic pickup so you can't say really that 's a acoustic perfomance plus the gibson johnny smith was mean not like a acoustic guitar but like a electric: the mini humbucker even if it's not mounted on the top is full electric, trust me, i have the same gtr.
That's what I'm talking about.......I like it when John soars like this. I'm still trying to except his tone though. Very rarely do I like his electric tone. Acoustic is fine.
I can't hear a thing.

His statement of the melody is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.
