John didn't learn alot of his piano skills until after The Beatles I believe.

Continuation: These two realization lead me to wonder: Why were John's instrumental tapes so reduced in his recordings? For example, his acoustic guitar on Jealous Guy is mostly inaudible. He could have played the piano part that Phil Spector plays in that song. I know John was a guitarist primarily, but he could have contributed so much more the instrumental tracks of the Beatles and his own solo career!

I used to think that John had no real skill at the piano and that Paul was the real pianist of the Beatles. These tapes shown me how skilled John really was at the piano. They have also shown me how much John brought into his songwriting. I used to think that John would write a song on his acoustic guitar, bring it into a producer, and then the producer would add the arrangement. But on these piano tapes, I can see that John really knew what he wanted before he entered the studio. Continued...

John is my Hero.. i love him always did and always will. I will never stop missing his prescence in the world and in my life.. I miss him every single day. Now i just have to say how i feel about this amazing song. First of all the sheer simplistic beauty of John Lennon sitting at his piano with bare feet just singing this ethereal and dark beautiful love song to Yoko .. Not polished just pure raw beauty and magic. The melody is haunting. I always loved when John sang straight from his soul.

I just checked the Wiki entry on this song, & it says "In January 1994, Paul McCartney was given two tape cassettes by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono that included home recordings of songs Lennon never completed or released ... in addition to two other songs was a tape with the words "for Paul" scrawled hastily in John's handwriting, which included "Grow Old With Me" and "Now and Then".

It will never exist. because too many frequencies of the voice and piano overlap. If it was a kick drum, you might have a reasonable chance - but no one will ever be able to extract a multi-track recording from a mono source without obvious problems.
