I wonder if taking the end off would be easier on the band saw or plasma cutter. Then a bath in rust remover over night. Might even preserve nice pits in the surface.
@onerichartist I thought about using the chop saw but couldn't get them to sit in the clamp right. The plasma would just leave me with more grinding to clean up. I don't have a metal bandsaw so that is out. If I was going to paint them the rust remover would work but these were heading back outside anyway so why loose all that good rust patina.

Sure, but then you have to stop the acid from eating the spike. You also have to deal with the fumes and you just know you will get it on your hands and or cloths.

Dipping in muriatic acid to strip off the rust wouldn't make it a faster process?

Yeah, but I learned the hard way that it's worth it. Bad welds with these puppies cause them to be more fragile.
