Remember the three (non-racist) "little monkey" comments made by Cosell? Who was #2 about??
#1. "That little monkey. The theory was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)
#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt/kickoff return?) EARL CAMPBELL???
#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)
This is what real football is, every kid who dreams of being a professional athlete should watch Earl Campbell highlights because he shows the true meaning of never quitting or giving up on anything. You would never see a guy nowadays take hits like that and keep going because his team depended on him. It's all about money and fame now but with Earl it was about winning and never giving up. His strength and determination are a lesson for everyone on how they should live their lives.
Its like, dude you guys used to watch film on the guy before you played against him? And you see he will run your ass over if you try to go head up with him. I guess they didn't submarine motherfuckers back then. Cut his legs at 100 miles an hour, he ain't going anywhere. But god damn Earl Campbell was a straight up Monster! Too sick!
the oilers trained at angelo state univ.when i went there and i got to watch this guy work out. he was shorter than i thought he would be but he was a block of muscle. angelo state had guys his size playing linebacker so i wondered what made him so special. the agility drills left no doubt. it was like watching a tape that had been speeded up. there should be no way a 230 lb. man could move like that. at least he could have acted like it was difficult!
@ 5:05, one of the greatest truckings in the history of NFL football. #58 - Jim Youngblood, LB - Los Angeles Rams, was the recipient of that bone shattering helmet to chest BLASTING by big Earl Campbell.
@ectigers83 I THINK this may have been 1982... Jim Youngblood was #53. #58 was a rookie from Michigan, Mel Owens. #85, Jack Youngblood, finished off the hit on #58 after the hit by Earl.....that was sweet....
I love Barry Sanders but, I would rather defend against him than Earl, because Barry could make you look silly by making you miss, but with Earl, you did'nt know if he was going to make you miss, or run you over. And like Barry, he was faaast.
@rjc0l3... he played on special teams, returning and also on the line for punts and actually blocked two I can recall. There's a videos on here with one of the blocks.
@rjc0l3 I don't know what happened to that particular video... can't find it now. I believe it was from his freashman year... if you know how some coaches put talented players in different situations to see how they do. It was like that and surprised everyone... Earl going in on special teams??? Kick returns is obvious for running backs and recievers but on the line??? If I run across that video again I'll let you know.
@rjc0l3 Look up Earl Highlights by trivinity. The second play shows Earl highligthed in middle of line other team punting. The center breaks out to pick up an outside rusher... guess they thought Earl was a decoy. Anyway, he blocks the punt.
Brandon Jacobs? Lmao...Please...He couldn't hold Earl's helmet...In the same discussion with Earl Campbell? You are obviously a NYG fan lmao....keep deluding yourself he won't even be in the league in a couple years, just wait and see
I was a student @ UT the same time as Earl. He redefined the notion of a power runner, not just size and strength but speed. His first two years he was the fastest member of the Longhorn team. He is also as fine of an example of a man as there is. His current health struggles sadden me and I wish him many pain-free days in the years to come.
sadly, there is a price for being great. those legs once as strong as a grizzly are jelly and the man fast as a leopard can barely move an inch. im too young to know earl and see him play. but even tho im 22, he is imo the greatest back of all time. i watch all his old games that i can find. unfortunately all good things must come to an end, except one thing. his legacy, this man left an unforgettable mark on football. and he will be loved; we love you earl. god bless you...
@jaw1987cchs i agree. i am 24 years old and i was to young to have watched him to. but my dad use to always talk about earl campbell and he actually saw him play once and said it was amazing. it is great that i can actually go back and watch him play. thats why i love youtube. i can actually see all the plays my dad would tell me about. especially the hit jack tatum put on earl.... that was unreal.
I feel bad for whoever had to try to tackle earl. Cause you know that they got ran over. Earl has big ass legs too one of his legs is both of mine together hes more than just a running back hes a beast.
Until he started to break down after a few years he was crazy fast, especially for his size. For a few years he was the best back ever. If you had to pick one back for one game in his prime many people would pick Earl Campbell.
An amazing athlete. Ask Isaiah Robertson of the Rams. Earl ran right over the top of him and laid him out flat. Almost never could one guy bring him down.
watching these highlights it seems like earl was pretty fast. this is in regular speed and he's not slow. not saying he belongs in the top ten with the fastest just saying he does seem to have speed.
One thing I noticed is that he could change direction and juke you not just run through you. That part of his game is underated (the juking part of course).
Man,Earl was a BEAST. I'm a lifelong diehard Cowboy fan but I am a fan of the game and a real fan respects greatness and Earl was great. Sad that he wore down but man he was punishing while he lasted.
On December 24,2006 at 8 o'clock in the morning, a young 14 year old boy by the name of Scott Jackson was found dead.Doctors couldn't come up with the cause of his death. His mother checked his emails to see if she could figure out what happened.Turns out he was still signed into myspace. She found he had gone to sleep after he read and didn't repost a chain letter.if you don't repost this to 6 videos a girl with no face will kill you tonight. IM SORRY BUT IM SCARED
They don't make them like this anymore! The only two backs that come close today is LT and AP...and that Giants RB #27. I forget. But the rest are jukers looking for the big break aways and are two inconsistent because of it. It's like Babe Ruth, he was the Home Run King but also the Strike Out King too! Get the tough yards, first downs not the long TD's. Players like that put their teams in bad situations. I rather have the consistent backs. Better for the team.
What a freakin' warrior. It's a little scarry how he holds the ball sometimes. Bet his coaches threw fits about it. But how can you argue with the end result?
What a lot of the young running backs don't realize is that being a power running back has very little to do with upper body strength. Earl Campbell had 34" thighs which is the main reason why he could run people over. Another thing that is important is his feet were always moving. If you watch his legs they never stop moving. That's what makes a great running back. I would recommend any high school coach to show their backs Earl Campbell footage and put emphasis on how he kept his feet moving
@DayneTrain14 ... you're right about the leg strength. I wasn't very big, 175 lbs but I could leg press 1,000 lbs... and I was one of the toughest backs to bring down. The upper body strength is important also but i believe it was my leg strength that made me the back I was. Use to freak out linemen and line backers that though I was going to be an easy take down... BOOM!!! not.
He was great one. It is a testament to the skill and determination of the Pittsburgh Steeler`s defense that they were sometimes able to stop him. Of course, it took the entire defensive team to do that!
Many do not know Earl was a great Linebacker. Earl covered the field from sideline to sideline. He knocked out a many of players on defense. He was a Linebacker at Dogan Jr High, Moore Jr High and John Tyler High School. We enjoyed Earl's as the best Running Back from his Junior High School days thru his years as a Pro. earl was awesome and he is still the only back ever to rush for 200 or more yards in a game 4 times in a single season not barry ,walter ,or jim can say that, and lets face it the iolers were horrible they made the playoffs only because off big bad earl.
Earl Campbell was one of the best RBs ever. I wonder if ever fumbled a lot because of how he would hold the football out there with one hand. Seems to me being the great runner that he is he should secure the ball.
interesting that you bring up the fumble issue because he did have a problem with that... it was one of the few weaknesses he had... despite that, he was an insane running back...
wow...it wasn't until i watched the clip 10 times in a row at 5:17 that i noticed Earl actually throw the guy off of him, then stumbled trying to keep his footing so the defender couldnt grab him...notice how he tries.
man, there will never be another Earl ...gave new meaning to the term "keep on trucking" too bad backs these days dont understand ITS ALL IN THE LEGS!
hooorrray !!! 5 star video.. i'd pay 10 grand for one of those ripped of # 34 jerzies.. what a class act .. humble, gracious, all around great guy... no beating of his chest saying "look at me".. tough man .. obviously raised by a wonderful mother.. miss you earl!!
Being a fullback, I always tried to play my game like Earl. For 5'9 I can run some pretty big guys over.. makes you feel like a BA. Earl Campbell was THEE BadAss .. no doubt.
Man...for a guy who's known for simply obliterating defenders, these clips show that Campbell had a great deal of agility and quickness for a big guy. His game was a lot more multifaceted than people give him credit for.
It amazes me to see someone so powerful outrun so many defenders.
Anyone else agree that it seems like closer the camera is the scarier he looks when he runs??? I would hate to tackle him.
I met him once when he had a bbq restaurant in Austin. Hes still a big guy, but its kinda sad because even when I saw him he was walking alright but it wasn't normal. It didn't look like too comfortable.
Yeah, he owns a BBQ place in Tyler now, I met him a couple years ago, he's a real nice guy, but it was weird to see him move with so much difficulty when he used to be able to run so well.
I agree. Also, when looking at lower body strength, Roger Craig deserves a nod. He would knock dudes out with his knees and thighs, maybe shoulda tried MMA LOL!
a man to look up too when playing football and yes there is no such thing as perfect but there is close to it and earl was the closest to it when it came to running back
I really think he was the BEST runningback of all time. THE BEST, i know how much that can be argued b/c there are so many legends that can be compared, but this guys is def. always top 2 or 3.
That was his infamous hit on LB Isaiah Robertson in 1978. Before that hit, he was a 6-time Pro Bowler and 2-time 1st-Team All-Pro; he still played four more seasons, but he was never quite the same afterward.
Earl was asked about that hit by Bob Costas and he said he really doesn't like talking about it and regrets doing it because it so adversely altered Robertson, maybe not physically, but mentally.

thegmann67 3 years ago
Earl Campbell was one of the best RBs ever. I wonder if ever fumbled a lot because of how he would hold the football out there with one hand. Seems to me being the great runner that he is he should secure the ball.
tommygunn162 3 years ago
interesting that you bring up the fumble issue because he did have a problem with that... it was one of the few weaknesses he had... despite that, he was an insane running back...
conni70 3 years ago
wow...it wasn't until i watched the clip 10 times in a row at 5:17 that i noticed Earl actually throw the guy off of him, then stumbled trying to keep his footing so the defender couldnt grab him...notice how he tries.

Remember a MNF in 1978 where Lambert couldn't tackle him on a goal line play

this vid would be better with music.
But still gotta love Earl, favorite RB ever and best EVER!!
demecoryans1 3 years ago
at 5:17 a normal human being couldnt have withstood that hit and still made it going forward.

The run when he takes the guy out and then runs out of his jersey is the best run in NFL history!
thomascb84 3 years ago
that sounds good but i remember the run where barry sanders gave rod woodson a juke move that was so sick that he tore up his ACL hahahahahhaha
vanityrose12 3 years ago
AWESOME!!!! (DATZ ALL I HAVE 2 SAY!) But all that hittin really took its toll on Earl. He can barely walk now and he is only in his 50s!
Bigwook2 3 years ago
great video
'
how bout HOFer Donnie Shell #31 of the Steeler Dynasty of the 70's taking a 15 yard ride trying to tackle Earl?
And the classic Jack Tatum hit at the goal line.
Of course Tatum got him down, but Earl kept moving forward somehow and got the TD
A regular human running back woulda been decapitated, when it came to those vicious helmet to helmet hits, Tatum was a walking nightmare...
but #34 kept going

Being a fullback, I always tried to play my game like Earl. For 5'9 I can run some pretty big guys over.. makes you feel like a BA. Earl Campbell was THEE BadAss .. no doubt.
He says GET OUT MY WAY HO
WittofMV 3 years ago
Man...for a guy who's known for simply obliterating defenders, these clips show that Campbell had a great deal of agility and quickness for a big guy. His game was a lot more multifaceted than people give him credit for.
Odawg96 3 years ago 5
That fullback did take a wallop at 0:40. Wish more video of Earl would show up there are plenty other amazing runs.

I'm fairly certain his fullback died at 0:40.

Man that one clip of him destroying that guy, and then running through the rest of them as his tear away jersey is falling to peices, never gets old.

Yeah thats cool cus no one could take him down because of his size and those "Kleenex" jerseys

It didn't look like too comfortable.
jackalopin 3 years ago
Yeah, he owns a BBQ place in Tyler now, I met him a couple years ago, he's a real nice guy, but it was weird to see him move with so much difficulty when he used to be able to run so well.

Earl campbell, walter payton and barry sanders are the best running backs.

I agree with you entirely but you forgot Jim Brown

I agree. Also, when looking at lower body strength, Roger Craig deserves a nod. He would knock dudes out with his knees and thighs, maybe shoulda tried MMA LOL!

Earl was what BO could have perhaps been. Bo was faster however earl was more explosive and powerful.
