Another #1 hit for The Queen of Soul on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 199th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #13 on the Top 40 charts.
Although Purdie had previously done some session work on Aretha's backing tracks for Atlantic, this concert tour was the first time they had met face to face. Even at this early period, Aretha had already heard of the legendary drummer and when they were introduced, she was reported to have said "soooooo you're the great 'Pretty' Purdie I've been hearing about". The two became close friends after that.
@tilorosa i must agree with you tilorosa. Bobby Blu Bland's version is also great. He did it first in the early 60's. Aretha did not change it up much. It was already perfect. My favorite Aretha song though.
@Tammyrhodes You can actually hear him applauding Aretha on the drums. At the end of Call Me he is giving her an ovation on the drums. How touching and a great compliment when you move your band members.
If I could die listening to one song, it would probably be this ssong, everything about this song is beautiful: the lyrics, the instrumentation, and yes, the background...the most beautiful song ever!!
I am a good friend of the Queen and I tell her all of the time that this is probably my favorite tune by her. The background singing in this song is AWESOME. Long live the queen
Omg! This song is beautiful... Its funny kos this song was playing on the credits of a doco about this lady Terry Brandt or somthing... When i heard it i had to quickly remember some of the lines and google it... When i found it was Aretha it got me wondering what other good soulful songs are out there waiting to be heard by my generation... Love It!!!

Aretha Franklin: One of the rare singers that almost ALWAYS sings best when accompanying herself. This Montreux appearance is legendary.

In tx 1975 i stopped on road there was atruck of watermelons.
they had a cheap phonograph and were playing bobby's song
over and over " share your love with me."

Well, as long as the source of that "unknown" quote wasn't jealous or "annoyed by Aretha's omnipresence". Nice backhanded compliment.

It's a shame alright... That folks don't get down like this anymore. I love Aretha Franklin.
