Thanks for your reply. I totally agree with what you said. I must also say that I like both the Gruberova and the Sills in this role. They are different. B.Sills plays a queen deeply affected by the death of Robert Devereux, E. Gruberova plays a queen whose sorrow for his death made her mad.She renders this state of madness due to the shock she had in a superb way.
Is this a wrong interpretation of the opera? I don`t really know and therefore I ask you , Diego, if you know more in this regard.
I think that it was perhaps the stage director and not the Gruberova to choose this interpretation which she performed perfectly. She (the queen) is out of herself because of the shock and the sorrow and that's why she walks tottering and not because she is an "ubriacona" as I've read in one of some stupid comments.
But it seems that not all are able to understand that!
Why the ones who do not like the Gruberova spend only one second of their time to listen to her? They should listen only to the singers they like and stop loosing their time to write vile and ridiculous comments which do not certainly change the appreciation that the Gruberova's fans have for her.
Diego, perhaps you are coming to Munich to listen again to the Gruberova in Roberto Devereux next year in February.
Edita Gruberova is one of the best sopranos ever. Her voice is simply spectacular. Still with 64 y.o. !!!! This has not discusion. I saw this performance in Munich 2007 and when someone decide to stay stand and ovation for more than 30 min. is for something special. I never saw something similar with nobody at any opera theather. It wasn't the 'crazy fans', was the whole theather. Incredible. Brava!
I think her maturity and artistry simply shine through in this earth-shattering finale; precisely when the set is devoid of lavish costumes and props, allowing the focus to be on her facial expression, bodily gestures and of course, her singing. The coda in this version is still my favourite - fast, piquant and dear me - who else could hold a high D for a good ten seconds like Gruberova?
I saw her in Mannheim on Saturday singing Roberto Devereux and she was perfect. She is nowhere near "past her best". She received standing ovations, and the audience would not let her leave. She kept coming back for almost 30 minutes. I imagine it took her another 2 hours to sign the photographs of all her fans waiting for her after the concert. She is really L'UNICA.
@belcunto Well, his role actually isn't mentioned in the libretto as far as I'm concerned. But the brochure that came with the DVD said, that he is meant to be James of England, whom Elisabetta bequeathes her crown - which is historically incorrect but fits her role in the opera quite well, I think.
Callas & Gencer as Norma....
She's unique - does the bel canto roles like no one else. Maybe over the top acting wise and vocally mannered, but absolutely draws you in and keeps you enthralled. She's a great artist.

I love her here, I dont know this role very well and how I should be sung but she makes me fell an incredible emotion ever time I listen to her , I´ve seen this video thousans of times and i never get tired of it. I´d like to see her in live.

This is SO bad, it's actually funny. I played it for a number of friends at a dinner party recently, and they thought it was a parody that was supposed to be funny. Her squeaks, grunts, those hideous faces she makes, and finally pulling off the wig made everyone scream. Even when she was young, she sounded terrible. Her fans must be from whatever little country she is from. Sorry.,
Edita Gruberova is from Slovakia, but her fans come from lots of countries, not just Slovakia (Germany, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Italy,...).
Please, do respect other people taste. I understand you don't like her,her acting, her singing... - like I dont at all like Sutherland f.e., but it does not mean she's not a good singer (I admit Sutherland was good, even great sometimes, but I don't like her). So, please, enjoy singers you like and let us enjoy the one we like.
There's no singer equal to this one, in my opinion. It's exquisite, and she doesn't go mad, she just gets exceedingly angry, at herself. I'm so glad we can hear her even if only in snippets. I
The problem I have with Grubie's interpretation is that Elizabeth doesn't go mad...crushed, in despair, yes...but mad? No. Grubie turns it into a "mad scene" that is far too over the top. In addition, if Sills' voice was too light, Grubie's is lighter by far. Her little squeaks in "si, si per me" are an indication of trying to get something more out of the voice. Sorry, but if you want a lesson in how to not sing belcanto, this would be it.
Inegalabila, splendida, tulburatoare interpretarea! Voce dumnezeiasca, joc de scena impecabil. Regie inteligenta, costume perfecte.
i love her i never get bored of listening to her!!! she is one amazing woman with one amazing voice!!!! This final scene is great, mind u so is the whole production!! Was she 62 at time of production??
I never tire of hearing this diva's gorgeous colatura voice, or seeing her beauty. For me she has it all. wonderful vocal actress too. I do remember her unbelievable tequniqu4
Her voice is incredibly bright, although, of course, past its best. And even she doesn't display a serviceable low register for this part, it´s very impressinve piece of singing!
I think that the last scene was rather funny than moving in this production, but Gruberova is a great singer and vocal actress :D. By the way, James looks like a fag.

A glorious aria, sung majestically. She's such an expressive singer. Thank you for posting this video.

This is a perfect role for a mature voice and Gruberova sings and acts it to the max. 5 stars for Edita!

Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza...
Giustizia domanda, reclama vendetta...
Già l'angiol di morte fremente v'incalza...
Supplizio inaudito entrambi vi aspetta...
Sì vil tradimento, delitto sì rio
clemenza non merta, non merta pietà...
Nell'ultimo istante volgetevi a Dio;
ei solo perdono conceder potrà.
Mirate quel palco... di sangue rosseggia...
È tutto di sangue il serto bagnato...

Her voice is incredibly bright, although, of course, past its best. And even she doesn't display a serviceable low register for this part, it´s very impressinve piece of singing!

I'd love to know what she's singing about. Are there any lyrics or subtitles that can be provided? Thank you very much.

I think that the last scene was rather funny than moving in this production, but Gruberova is a great singer and vocal actress :D. By the way, James looks like a fag.
