  • Thanks for your reply. I totally agree with what you said. I must also say that I like both the Gruberova and the Sills in this role. They are different. B.Sills plays a queen deeply affected by the death of Robert Devereux, E. Gruberova plays a queen whose sorrow for his death made her mad.She renders this state of madness due to the shock she had in a superb way.

Is this a wrong interpretation of the opera? I don`t really know and therefore I ask you , Diego, if you know more in this regard.

  • @Diego Martinazzoli

I think that it was perhaps the stage director and not the Gruberova to choose this interpretation which she performed perfectly. She (the queen) is out of herself because of the shock and the sorrow and that's why she walks tottering and not because she is an "ubriacona" as I've read in one of some stupid comments.

But it seems that not all are able to understand that!

  • @Diego Martinazzoli

Why the ones who do not like the Gruberova spend only one second of their time to listen to her? They should listen only to the singers they like and stop loosing their time to write vile and ridiculous comments which do not certainly change the appreciation that the Gruberova's fans have for her.

Diego, perhaps you are coming to Munich to listen again to the Gruberova in Roberto Devereux next year in February.

  • I truly believe Edita owns this role. Brings me to tears of amazement and emotion...

  • I could not imagine this aria sung any better!

  • This is one of the voices of the century ...so what...most of them cany act!!¬

  • The best version i've heard so far.

  • Mature, refined and expressive artistry. Should be an inspiration for younger artists!

  • Cougar realness.

  • Edita Gruberova is one of the best sopranos ever. Her voice is simply spectacular. Still with 64 y.o. !!!! This has not discusion. I saw this performance in Munich 2007 and when someone decide to stay stand and ovation for more than 30 min. is for something special. I never saw something similar with nobody at any opera theather. It wasn't the 'crazy fans', was the whole theather. Incredible. Brava!

  • I think her maturity and artistry simply shine through in this earth-shattering finale; precisely when the set is devoid of lavish costumes and props, allowing the focus to be on her facial expression, bodily gestures and of course, her singing. The coda in this version is still my favourite - fast, piquant and dear me - who else could hold a high D for a good ten seconds like Gruberova?

  • I saw her in Mannheim on Saturday singing Roberto Devereux and she was perfect. She is nowhere near "past her best". She received standing ovations, and the audience would not let her leave. She kept coming back for almost 30 minutes. I imagine it took her another 2 hours to sign the photographs of all her fans waiting for her after the concert. She is really L'UNICA.

  • Fantastic..superlative!

  • what role is the suited man at the end playing. the one with long brown hair? I am not familiar with this opera. Thank you.

  • @belcunto Well, his role actually isn't mentioned in the libretto as far as I'm concerned. But the brochure that came with the DVD said, that he is meant to be James of England, whom Elisabetta bequeathes her crown - which is historically incorrect but fits her role in the opera quite well, I think.

  • @andara1987 thanks!

Callas & Gencer as Norma....

C'est EDITA GRUBEROVA at all ! Merci MADAME !

  • She's unique - does the bel canto roles like no one else. Maybe over the top acting wise and vocally mannered, but absolutely draws you in and keeps you enthralled. She's a great artist.

  • What´s the name of the guy at the end?

  • no comment!

  • The James is hot.

  • u-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e ...

    Brava.

  • 5:05: Absolutely fabulous !!!

Heard that tone live in Munich yesterday, BRAVA, BRAVA, BRAVA, BRAVA, BRAVA !!!

  • fuck! that high note is 13 bars long. absolute genius.

  • come sempre una schifezza !! Ingnobile elisabetta.....

  • @mrc1961 concordo

Aspetto solo quello

  • What a gift, what a wonderful gift.

  • pietosa!

  • marvellous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Singing opera on stage means acting too,Never seen anybody else as moving as Mme Gruberova.Love this scene

  • this is too much. Shivers every where

  • Quest scena é pazzesca!!! Grandissima Gruberova! =]]

  • BRAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • i live in fort lauderdale fl, and i love for this woman i would love to see her one day

  • Saw her today on stage. Breath takingly fantastic.

  • I'll se her Friday!!

  • Saw her yesterday! The best performance i ve ever seen in opera!! Edita , the bariton and the mezzo were amazing!

  • @twizzle99

No one can sing Elisabetta like she does.

  • Brava!

  • Best Elisabetta ever!

  • @AlexCrowScott

f this is the best? My god ...

    It 's a parody

  • All respect to her ... this is a huge role for someone of her age ... Viva La Gruberova!

  • I love her here, I dont know this role very well and how I should be sung but she makes me fell an incredible emotion ever time I listen to her , I´ve seen this video thousans of times and i never get tired of it. I´d like to see her in live.

  • if u r from Europe she is performing this production of Roberto in Munich on the following dates, and this might be the last chance to catch this production with Gruberova in the role:

    Sunday, 21 February 2010

    Friday, 26 February 2010

    Wednesday, 3 March 2010

    Monday, 8 March 2010

    Munich Opera Festival:

    Wednesday, 30 June 2010

    Sunday, 4 July 2010

  • booked for the 8 of march! cant wait!

  • I have just seen Gruberová at the Th. des Champs-Elysées in Paris on Dec. 17, where she sang this closing scene. It was MESMERIZING! A true Golden Age singing lesson. Far better than here. It was PERFECT & AWESOME. Bless Her! A true Grande Dame of the first rank.

  • in some other video i said that some times she overacts...vut here she is giving a acting lesson...perfect..

  • Many of us saw Beverly Sills in this role (and a more intelligible production) at NY City Opera 35 years ago and she was IT - always will be. Gruberova's voice more like Caballe's in sound but more dramatic than Cab (not hard!) but was always too edgy for me, even in her pre-YouTube prime.

  • FFF

  • The greatest coloratura that ever lived!

  • I saw her live sining live and she is great!! The greatest at the moment.

    I'm afraid the last primadonna

  • The production is silly but Gruberova is GREAT.

  • She is from Slovakia and I am not. Can't you understand that people DO have different tastes.

  • Edita Gruberova is from Slovakia, but her fans come from lots of countries, not just Slovakia (Germany, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Italy,...).

Please, do respect other people taste. I understand you don't like her,her acting, her singing... - like I dont at all like Sutherland f.e., but it does not mean she's not a good singer (I admit Sutherland was good, even great sometimes, but I don't like her). So, please, enjoy singers you like and let us enjoy the one we like.

  • @MisterSoprano I was a huge Sutherland fan but the more as I listen to Gruberova and Devia, the less I like Sutherland...

  • im amazed....hers and caballes are my favorites

  • There's no singer equal to this one, in my opinion. It's exquisite, and she doesn't go mad, she just gets exceedingly angry, at herself. I'm so glad we can hear her even if only in snippets. I

  • since when has elizabeth turned into a silly puppet?

  • 03:43 est merveilleux que partie! Vivant la Gruberova!

  • The problem I have with Grubie's interpretation is that Elizabeth doesn't go mad...crushed, in despair, yes...but mad? No. Grubie turns it into a "mad scene" that is far too over the top. In addition, if Sills' voice was too light, Grubie's is lighter by far. Her little squeaks in "si, si per me" are an indication of trying to get something more out of the voice. Sorry, but if you want a lesson in how to not sing belcanto, this would be it.

  • This is GREAT!! GREAT singing. Gruberova is great. And here she's really superlative.

    The BEST interpretation!!

    Perfect, Nothing else to say!

  • absolutely... this is the grave of stylish singing!

  • PERFEKT!!!!!!!

  • 5,00-5,16 super

  • She will do soon Lucia, Zerbinetta and Elvira (I Puritani) in Wien!

  • I am gonna be there (again :))) ) for all 3! :)

  • great aria and great performance

  • Inegalabila, splendida, tulburatoare interpretarea! Voce dumnezeiasca, joc de scena impecabil. Regie inteligenta, costume perfecte.

  • Gruberova triumphs again. What an extraordinary and moving singer. I loved it.

  • THIS is a Superlative performance by Ms Gruberova. This spectacular role has now been made her own signature role af them all.

    Long live Edita!

  • fantastica... the best soprano coloratura

    viva gruberova...

  • Tolle Stimme!

  • She is wonderfull to watch and listen to.

I saw her in Covent Garden many years ago in

Lucia, the tenor was Luis Lima, early 80/s I

think. She brought the house down after the mad scene.

  • i love her i never get bored of listening to her!!! she is one amazing woman with one amazing voice!!!! This final scene is great, mind u so is the whole production!! Was she 62 at time of production??

  • 58. she was born december 1946 and this production is from 2005. saw her in this production last year (2007) and it was just amazing

  • A glorious aria, sung majestically. She's such an expressive singer. Thank you for posting this video.

  • I never tire of hearing this diva's gorgeous colatura voice, or seeing her beauty. For me she has it all. wonderful vocal actress too. I do remember her unbelievable tequniqu4

    20 some years ago.

    Luvinblume

  • she is the diva...

    i love her voice....

the best what have czechoslovakia ever fathered :o)

  • This is a perfect role for a mature voice and Gruberova sings and acts it to the max. 5 stars for Edita!

  • A riveting and magnificent performance, and for me perfect as Gruberova always has been

I also remember her in earlier days . Luvinblume

  • Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza...

    Giustizia domanda, reclama vendetta...

Già l'angiol di morte fremente v'incalza...

    Supplizio inaudito entrambi vi aspetta...

Sì vil tradimento, delitto sì rio

clemenza non merta, non merta pietà...

    Nell'ultimo istante volgetevi a Dio;

    ei solo perdono conceder potrà.

Mirate quel palco... di sangue rosseggia...

È tutto di sangue il serto bagnato...

  • Her voice is incredibly bright, although, of course, past its best. And even she doesn't display a serviceable low register for this part, it´s very impressinve piece of singing!

  • I'd love to know what she's singing about. Are there any lyrics or subtitles that can be provided? Thank you very much.

  • I think that the last scene was rather funny than moving in this production, but Gruberova is a great singer and vocal actress :D. By the way, James looks like a fag.

  • Gruberovas acting is just great.
