I admit to a fair amount of ignorance on the subject (haven't watched other Coe vid and on my way out the door) but the David Allen Coe songs I've heard were pretty racist. I don't know if there was some sort of ironic intent there or what but I'm surprised to hear Penn speaking of Coe in such glowing terms.

Thanks for clearing that up. I live in a really racist town in southwestern PA (We're on the mason-dixon line. Admittedly, the insinuation assumes quite a bit but I assure it is appropriate for use here) and all the Coe I had ever heard before was blaring from camo-painted trucks with stars and bars on their rear windows.
