  • Would this be for a 1995 chevy Tahoe biult in Canada? I have a broken manifold bolt nearest to the fire wall.Do I take the head off or can it be done with the head in place?

  • @cartondavid1 You can do it either way - check with a snapon guy I think they have a special tool - also check with a local garage - sometimes they have a specialist come in and do it - also check a few videos on YT on how to remove broken exhaust bolts

  • I have an 03 silverado 4.8, 3 bolts snapped on driver side 4 on passenger side, you know what I'm doing in spring

  • Ford should have stepped up also when my freinds 03 f150 started to spit out sparkplugs from the heads. I would rather have this problem than sparkplugs shooting out of my heads its scary to think that could kill someone! this was happening w/4.6L 5.4L & 6.8L from 1997 > 2003 d.o.t.actually sided with ford? Now I hear from 03 >08 they put 2 piece sparkplugs in which if left to long carbon build makes it hard to get out and 2peice plug breaks at thread causing whole new problem

  • @1970gtosd You're right it is a very big problem with Ford and they are doing their very best at ignoring it - hopefully I'll be detailing it in a new video this year.

  • @carquestions Hey I have a ?.My freind w/ 03 f150! bought a 05 f150? And is having trouble with it to. window falling in door shift lever getting stuck and worried about 2 piece sparkplug. So i told him to buy 90s gmc truck.I own a 95 gmc for 15 yrs w/250000km w/no problems besides routine maintenence and good on gas wpg to regina & back on130L tank of gas.So I was wondering if you know of any problems w/ these trucks before I suggest buying one.

  • @1970gtosd 90's are ok - still have the broken bolts though - also diesel models have trouble with fuel pump modules overheating and the part is a bit pricey

  • @carquestions Thanx! I think I'll keep my 95 gmc and freshen it up. Been thinkin of buying newer but I dont trust newer trucks. Cheers!!

  • you probably made this up

  • @squibbles0 Sure I did - so did the other 100 posters - guess you don't know real from fake unless it hits you in the head.

  • Vise grips is all that's needed to get the rest of the bolt out. Fixed my 6.0 8 years ago with ARP bolts. Total cost 40 bucks.

  • @rlc2500hd Sure if it is broken with a little bit sticking out. Otherwise you are drilling it out....

  • not to hate on chevy, but my bro had an 01 silverado 2500hd, the front end allways broke, went through 3 trannys, the motor has an exhaust leak and a bent crankshaft. how it runs i don't know. some one else bought it and now the truck hasn't had a single problem. what the hell. my 90 lesabre runs better, and it has a 3800 v6. yeah buick

  • @Luigiisdead Take my word for it - it is still having problems it's just that your bro took care of all the problems when they ocurred - new owner not so much.

  • @carquestions we sold the truck. decided that sitting under every weekend wasn't fun no more. one of the cylinders in the motor was only 90 psi. the guy at the dealership said they are suppost to be 120 psi. it would also knock badly after it hit 20 mph

  • Your complaint might mean something if the vehicle didn't have 154k on it.

  • @Bustedknuckles88 As the video says thousands of vehicles have this problem and this truck had it before 154K -

  • I'd bet that the manifold expands more than the head and the constant bending of the bolts eventually snaps them off. Some kind of mechanism that allows the manifold to expand and contract is needed. How about longer bolts and ball ended spacer pillars bored slightly oversize? That should do it. Another way might be longer bolts with a stack of stainless washers. If the spacer pillars were grooved like a motorcycle cylinder the bolt temperature might be lowered. Good luck! 4x4s who'd have em?

  • 2003 Silverado 2500HD, both rear exhaust manifold bolt heads sheared off @ 70k miles. Check engine light on since. Also the clunking steering shaft. I pamper the truck too. Gotta love GM!

  • @erjentsvt Gotta love GM? - If a product lets me down I won't buy their stuff again until I know its been fixed.

  • @erjentsvt Gotta love GM? - when hell freezes over

  • i watch on my San Francisco CBS, some one paid $5000 for an engine repair. Nevertheless, GM never do a recall. People blamed Toyota, Bullshit. And older GM also have some engine problem too. Do some research on the net.

Recall is when safety involve, not when engine performance.

  • Dam this just happened to my o1sierra same bolts broke

  • This is a joke. Literally MILLIONS of cars have exhaust manifolds that leak, crack, rust out, ect. Its not any reason for a recall, its due to extreme climate and weather conditions that rust the bolts off. Replace the bolts and move on, its not a safety issue, its a mechanical repair.

Let me guess...you drive a Toyota?? Another idiot who thinks their shit don't stink.

  • @Wildman113 How many millions would be 2005 to 2007? Name one. What's your idea of extreme climates? Chicago, Detroit? Ohio? ... Who the hell did GM think would buy their trucks? Did they design a truck that only worked in Texas? Let me guess.. another redneck that thinks GM doesn't make mistakes and hates all things foreign? And no I don't own a Toyota and never have - Jeep and Corvette is what I drive. Great vehicles but I wouldn't claim they never make any mistakes or make the best cars.

  • I'll have to check my 2000 suburban, but it's got 312,000 km and no check engine light. So, if it has the defect then I dodged a bullet because it never caused a problem, even though I am getting close to the expected natural death of the vehicle. GM lawyers must have taken that factor into consideration when debating a recall, since a 'no harm no foul' arguement could be made for a case like mine. I don't think I would fix it now unless more problems happened.

  • @spelunkerd Right on - courts won't do sweet FrigA if you have got your use out of it- mostly north of 100k - Yours is one of the highest I've ever heard of withou having at least one bolt broken - not in the rust belt I guess? Had it since new? - keep it going to 500!

  • Done....Thanks for Taking the time to make this video. I just filed my complaint.

  • I have a 2005 yukon denali. getting the last stud out of the head is going to cost me $2500 after sending to machine shop. Brutal...Bad GMC

  • @TheSlip4fun Lets hope they own up - file acomplaint with NHTSA if you have the time

  • Everything is junk on the 99's to 2007's ( old style ) thats one of the many reasons for bankruptsy , I could make a list but I would rather not there is just too many screw ups , better keep buying tools, read and watch videos if you own one .

  • @twistedsledder Good advice -

  • i have a 2004 gmc 2500 my uncle has the 2005 gmc 2500 my father has the 2004 chevrolet 2500 all with broken exhaust manifold bolts the repair shop we use wont even touch them. he told us he has seen the same problem on the denali.

  • @afdfdl1 Please - each of you should file a complaint with NHTSA - this could easily turn into a fire hazard. Also file with EPA - how the hell these guys get away with breaking enviro laws is beyond me

  • I have a 2007, W 4500 with the 6.0. I just failed inspection because I have the same exact bolts broken on my truck. I have 80,000. miles on it & I know that both exhaust manifolds and all the bolts were already replaced once in 2009 at another Chevy dealership. I have several estimates for the repair which were all about $1,000.00. including my local dealer that claim's they don't ever see this condition. But they can usually fix it for $1,200. ^ Looks like I get to bail out GM yet again!

  • my bros truck has that same bolt on the drivers side gone and my truck has the last two on the drivers side broken his is a 2000 mine is a 99

  • i have a 04 2500 hd with the 6.0 ltr. the same exact bolts are broken off on my truck when it had 37,000 miles on it. driver front, pass rear bolts are broke off. i purchased truck new. couple weeks after i bought it i took it in to dealer because there was a honing sound from exaust. they said it was y pipe and repaired it. ever since bolts broke the sound came back, and of course its out of warrenty. replaced trans lines, now oil lines bad. abs sensors bad. speedometer broke. 55,000 miles now

  • @IBUILDCARS4U - I live in Canada so my ability to influence is limited to making this problem known via Youtube. What I don't understand is why someone in the US doesn't go after them using environmental laws through emissions laws? They got Copone on taxes can't they get GM on emissions, it has been done before with Honda.

  • Unbelievable ! Had a tapping sound in my 2005 GMC sierra Z-71 with the 5.3. I ran across your post / video. Found two bolts broke off drivers side rear of the exhaust manifold. Told a friend and he checked his. sure enough, same issue.

  • my family buisness has close to a hundred of the truck from that timeframe and none of them have any problem some have 300k and up

  • Jeep 2.5 4cyl same problem

  • I have a 2002 Sierra Denali with this same problem 80k for miles broken manifold bolts. I also have problems with my abs sensor going off at low speeds when stopping. If gm wants to keep there customers happy there better be a recall or next truck is a ford. Thank you for taking the time to post this video.

  • 2004 silverado 2500. 3 broken bolts and I know of 3 others in my town with the same problem

  • @ctboy72 Thanks for the posting - get your friends to post their complaints here as well since it will be here for ever and can be used as evidence in the future.

  • You should take a look at the video about the tool that was built and is now pat pend. for this issue you will find it to be a big help for the one time user or for the guy that owns the shop and is looking to save more than two hours on this kind of repair the tool was built with every one in mind from the first time user to the pro that can remove any bolt. The Video Is Gm Ford Broken Bolts Faster By Fuzzy

  • i dunno when people are gonna wake up....gm,ford,etc. used to be good companies back in the day....things change...most of their stuff is crap now...it doesn't take an expert to figure out that a toyota, honda,or nissan is a better built, longer lasting, just plain better vehicle than a chevy, ford, or dodge

  • @kilgoja right on

  • Goverment is too busy with Toyota than GM. They will not make a big deal like they did to Toyota. FIX GM NOT TOYOTA

  • I am not surprised that this is happening. My 2007 6.0L Sierra has the same issue. It is probably because the engineers are being pressured by upper management to "design it cheaper" and purchasing is now out sourcing all bolts and seals etc... to china. It is all about making profitt. Actually I was a Chev fan, but I like Ford, for there resistance at cheapening there products. What happened to the saying Tried tested and true. People are more loyal to something that is reliable.

  • When are you coming back to school sir we miss you!

  • I have a 2002 Chevy Tahoe with 105,000 miles on it. I have a broken bolt on the exhaust manifold. GMAC and Chevy are denying that it is a problem and want me to pay to fix it. How do we get a class action started?

  • @denisesspiderwebs The quickest and most effective way to get them to fix a defective product is to go to NHTSA and fill out a complaint. Then get as many people as you can to do the same thing as well as post a comment here. The next best way is o find a lawyer that owns one of these things with the same problem and have them get angry enough to start it.

  • Check out the exhaust manifold heat shields!!!! It looks like they were shaped with a mallet by 14 year old!!! What gives???

  • @happy543210 Totally original from the factory - never been touched

  • i have a 2005 escalade 6.0 and i got to looking and mine is ok i only have 38,987 miles on my escalade so i will keep look for this thank you .

  • @LT1This Look real close at the rear ones. You may get lucky if you live in a salt free warm climate. I don't expect every V8 to get this problem more like 7 or 8 out of 10 within 100,000.

    Thanks for the comment

    M

  • get on the ball GM or this is my 4th and last gm product!!!

    RECALL this junk!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @chuffo302stang Keep up the comments - they will be here for years to come and for all to see - thanks!

  • I have seen this on a 99 silverado, my 99 sierra and a friends 02 denali

Im sure there are tons that people dont even know about yet!!!

  • @chuffo302stang

Thanks for the comment - you couldn't be more right.

  • Gm does need to man up all the other car compines accually care about their buyers.

  • Has anyone filed the complaint yet? How do you start a class action lawsuit for this?

  • @shipmate5967 I did on July 21, 2010. NHTSA said to go to their Safercar.gov site and file a defect complaint. They also recommended contacting the FTC which I did. Another easy form to complete. The third suggestion was to contact the state attorney general's office.

  • I have a 2003 Silverado 6 cylinder that has this same problem. I took it to the garage and they showed me the missing bolt & my engine light is also on. I already know that it won't pass the emissions test & the cost will be well over $1000. So there's no current recall and this is money I don't have to fix this problem. It probably will take forever to start the recall process and it probably won't get anywhere. I've always been a GM fan, but I probably won't buy a GM vehicle anymore.

  • my 2000 6.0 has this problem...do you ever think there will be a recall for this?

  • @LtSplatter Yes if people like you post what they think. Let loose - GM watches Youtube as do most others - its the 3rd most visited place on the planet and your comment can never be removed, it will be here for all future buyers so let GM know what you think and what the next brand is you'll buy. If enough people do it there will be action o GM's part.

  • I have a '01 Silverado that was built in Canada, Sold in CA,then transfered to west TX. Only 1 is missing on the left far rear and it does tick and show signs of an exhaust leak. No CEL yet at 153,XXX miles.

  • @Cruiseomatic1989 Would you change brands because of this?

  • @carquestions Already looking at getting a new Ford Superduty to replace it.

  • none here on my truck 2006 with 39100 miles, my dads express van with the same engine and 200k has none ether, and he has driven it since 20 miles on it

  • @rcfreak363

I'd expect few examples of this happening in the southern states such as Arizona were you live.

  • @carquestions huh? i think you would mean of it not happening, i think it is cause mostly in colder area's (Canada is a great example) where they put salt to help with icy roads, which causes metal to rust, and bolts to break.

  • @rcfreak363 Maybe I should be a bit more clear - I'd expect to see very few examples of the broken bolt problem in Arizona and lots of examples in the "salt regions"

  • @carquestions ok, i was thinking the same, but no car company can really do anything against rust unless they do some sort of aftermarket rust prevention device

  • @rcfreak363 Well I think most consumers expect a Chev to have rusty bolts as often as a Ford, Dodge, Honda or whatever - in this case they don't. I expect them to live up to industry standards and compete - other companies can keep their manifold bolts in northern states on the engine why can't GM

  • @carquestions well i know that my engine compartment isn't as cramped as my neighbors ford with the 5.4, and their is more room for water to get in their

  • @rcfreak363 That could be a factor. You may want to mention to them that the sparkplugs often break on the 5.4 Ford's when changing them - many complaints on this and very expensive to fix. If it isn't too old have him take out the plugs and coat them with antiseize asap.

  • Nicely done video, I'll ask on my site to see how many folks complain about this issue. Not sure where you get the facts that you think that 80% will develop this problem, I'm certainly not hearing this issue frequently on my site.

  • @gmtruckclub I'm in Ontario Canada - 8 out of 10 we see over 80,000 kms has had this defect - we are in the salt belt area so maybe its different in the lower mid states

  • Nicely done video, I'll ask on my site to see how many folks complain about this issue.

  • I've a V6 model and the exhaust rattled like crazy all the time at low speed, I took it to a shop and they told me I had to replace the catalytic converter and install a fexpipe to get rid of it. this was back in 02 when the vehicle was new. wasn't happy. I heard the current V6 models still have this issue. would be nice if GM steps up and stops making defective products.

  • @watso64 Sorry to hear that - The good news is your comment will be here forever and you can tell any dealer, salesperson or mechanic to see it for themselves. GM or anybody else is'nt number three in the world for internet traffic - youtube is. Young kids will search this and probably more so as they get older looking for info when buying or fixing a car.

  • Got the same problem on my 2002 silverado with a 5.3l, i have three broken manifold bolts, the one of either side in the farthest back, and one on the very front.

  • @ippielb Sorry to hear that - lets use Youtube to get them to fix it or make it a recall

Share this video witrh others somehow - tell your GM dealer about it, if it becomes common knowledge GM will fix these thing under a recall but not unless there is enough of it in the news

  • @carquestions I was just wondering what your daily job is? you seem to have great knowledge on cars and how they work. is this just a hobby like mine or are you a mechanic? I can not stress to you how much i have learnt from your videos! :)

  • @TheOxTube I'm an automotive instructor. I have 2 mechanics licenses, one for cars and one for trucks, my full bio is listed on my channel page.

  • I have a 2002 Escalade, 6.0L, 120,000 miles with 2 broken exhaust manifold bolts also. I agree that these should not be breaking. Just got a quote for $1,700 to repair. I'm not happy! Everyone get on board for a recall.

  • @UDraft4 This vehicle is driven around southern Ontario. If every car I worked on had loads of rust and broken manifold bolts I think I would have mentioned it. There are 1986 Chev pickups running around here and everyone is in better condition. As far as the Fords, Dodges, Toyotas, Hondas, etc. go they show no such rust problems or broken manifold bolts. I'm reporting this problem because the problem is unique to GM's and very common.

  • Well if I have to repair my 08 5.3!

Give's me a reason to swap to headers.

  • junk manifold, junk heatsheat, junk exhaust bolts,

  • For a 2005 truck what a piece of junk...

  • They should replace the bolts. I had a 1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L. So I understand being overlooked for a recall. Car companies are terrible and are only looking to sell pretty-faced crap.

  • Looks like a good call, Mark. That can be a pesky problem, and I live in an area where a trouble code means EPA failure for inspection, and thus no new registration.

  • @1001Hobbies My heart goes out to small business owners who have to cover the cost of fixing this. You'd think more people would file a complaint with the EPA or NHTSA to get GM to do something. We are living in a new age, No car company can hide from their mistakes for long. Ford just issued a secret recall for Escapes - trans cooler - GM could at least do the same if they are serious about winning customers back

  • I checked my GMC Suburban it also got the same problem, i found out 2 bolts on the left is missing!!!

The right side has 6 bolts. But also no check engine

    Thanx for the video

  • Sorry about that - there are tens of thousands like you across the country. Please make a complaint to NHTSA - if it gets bad enough it could lead to an engine fire in rare cases.

  • @nnavigators Watch out for the Ford - Google broken spark plugs first -- they have a nasty habit of breaking off when changing

  • @carquestions

Thats pretty shocking, what happened to Ford and GM!!!

Is it because they ask for very cheap quality parts or is it normal factory fault?

  • @nnavigators Don't blame the workers or engineers - it's purchasing/accounting that make all final decisions on each and every little part - bolts included. They could make great cars but they'd have to charge more like Honda and Toyota - $1500 or so and they are afraid people wouldn't pay it. I'd pay it if I knew the cars/trucks would be as dependable as the average Honda

  • and you'd be 100% correct - forgot to plug it back in

  • Good video...I have a 2006 silverado 4.8 with no problems at all but i will be keeping a look out! My fuse thats works my dash controls..,seems to be burned out......my dash today was out for a few seconds at a time...but started working again.....Will i find that fuse in the truck or under the hood? thanks

  • GM is bankrupt. I don't think it is a good target for money hungry lawyers.

  • @MrKaz106 Ohhh yes it is, the government has control now, which mean big money. And maybe they can get some of those damn crooks for executives out of there.

  • @Zinizzle You realize the guberment people are crooks too, dont you?
