Weed grows wild in Hokkaido, not sure of the extent. Hemp has a very long history throughout Japan but perhaps even longer for the Ainu in Hokkaido. I've got a speech by a guy from Hokkaido talking a bit about it. I'll upload soon.
Many hemp products are made in Japan - Kimonos, foods, plastics, etc.
