That's about the best set-up for this plane. Forget the retracts, unless you want to build new stronger mounts and add the weight of some good electric or air retracts. But then it starts getting heavy and the motors can't cut it. So then it's new motors, props and spinners. But before that you need to put a dihedral brace in since the CF rods don't connect I'n the center, it's easy to fold the wings. Unfortunately this needs to when you glue the wings on. Mine is running HK mini air retracts
Just assembled mine. Planning first flight today. Landing gear was RUBBISH, so I dug it out like cleaning a fish. Thanks to your video, though, I know that it belly lands ok in grass, and I'll probably have a lot of fun with it. Thanks.
hello charlie, same issue out of the box here ... front servo for nose landing gear died so I had to replace it. I am not sure now how to make it work, especially with the rudder! Were you able to get it fixed somehow? If yes, can you please help us out by posting another video and this time showing inside your nose landing gear set?
i ordered this plane and it just arrived today and i wired every thing up like it said in the manual, 1-1-1, 2-2-2, 3-3-3, 4-4-4-4, 5-5-5-5, and then when i plugged the battery in, there was no initializing beeb, and even though my transmitter was on it didnt respond, is there an on and off switch some where or is there something else i have to do to make it work or does the battery hav to be fully charged the first time because i charged the battery for 45 minutes and i tried but it didnt work?
I was wondering if you could help me out. This aircraft is listed as a good beginner aircraft. Would you agree or do you feel it is more intermediate or advanced. As a beginner with a little experience I'm interested in this airplane or the Cessna 182T with flaps. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thank-you.
nice flying and nice looking plane. Would 3s 2200 25c batteries work on this as well maybe jst a little less power because of discharge? I got heaps of these batteries lying around would be good to use again.
A 3s 2200 25c will work just fine but you'll have to keep off full throttle the whole flight. You'll see a little less power with those type of batteries. Keep in mind i don't have any retract servos in operation because the retracts are useless when they come from the factory. That in itself will give you more flying time since you've eliminated 4 servos that would use power.
Very nice video Charlie. Does this P-38 have counter rotating props? What is the name and spelling of the material you have on the under belly of the plane for protection? Thank you.
This plane does not have counter rotating props. The material used for the bottom of the nacelles and bottom tips of the rudder fins is chassis protector. It's found at your local hobby shop the has RC cars. It comes in package of 2 sheets about 6X12 inches. I like this material because it's clear and molds to curves without creasing or causing bubbles.
@charliechip42 I have the P-38 on backorder from HobyyKing. Curious that they didn't put counter-rotating props. Now I'm going to retrofit my belly-landing models with chassis protector material... Thanks for the tips!
eco, she's got s little weight to her, so she likes a little speed to touch down soft, but not like your 3d foamies, you cant slow it down, and do a soft flare touch down(trust me I tried), but not major, still flies nice low speed, test it up high and you will get a feel for how slow she'll go, othe than my previous comments I would recommend this plane
Flew mine today , flew awsome only prob was the retracts,, first right gear gave out on landing , had to re-adjst to make sure it locks ot, 2nd landing the nose gear servo took a dump, im gonna get a metal gear servo for front tomorrow, should be good then, but man I love flyin her she flys awsome and looks so cool in the air, I've always loved the p-38
Becuase nose wheel servo is on same channel.other than that if your willing to go over it real well and mod what you need to to, it flies awsome. for the price you can' beat it,
Hey for anyone ordering this plane, first of all its from china, so you should be experienced and know how to tweak a new model, other than that you can't beat the price, I had to adjust the retracts a little, . and when I wired it up 1 motor was pulling the other pushing, you have to switch the wires on one to get both motors to pull, it does not operate like the real ones with counter rotating props.. also had to pull out and flip over the nose wheel steering servo
It does pretty good at low speeds. I recommend you take a look at the new Hobby Lobby B-25 coming out at the end of the month. The video presentations and quality of that plane looks far better than this P-38. The stall speed that can be accomplished is incredible compared to this P-38. Like if said before if your looking for a P-38 I think this one is it. I'm a big fan of EPO foam. You have to work on the retracts and a few other things but once it's dialed in it won't disappoint you.
No prob with my gear, just needed some adjustment on front to lock out, what about the front gear trying to turn in the bay while retracted? Seems like something will break while using rudders in the air and that nose geat trying to twist while folded?
Hadn't thought about that since I've momentarily have put any retract rework aside for the moment. I normally don't use the rudder unless necessary. The guy that built my plane at the factory probably assembled it hung over on a monday morning.
when I retracted the gear a few times my servos popped off. Guess they didn't use enough glue for them. My plans are to use metal gear servos in the future and dial in the landing gear. As for now I'm just enjoying flying the this P-38.
Just got mine together tonight, cant wait to fly it. Is there a way to sync the motors, mine seems to want to rotate to the right pretty hard, shouldnt be with the counter props?
Would this be a good plane for a novice?

Hey Charlie,
What size batteries did you finally settle on for your P-38? What size will the battery box handle?

that is soooo fucking cool.

I really like the look of this plane! Did you buy it from Banana Hobby, and what assembly was required? Thanks! Great Vid!

before I go ahead and order mine... How well does the plane fly at low speeds.
(I am use to slow flying 3D profile foamies, but i am looking to get something with more speed and that is more of a plane not a toy :D)

I tossed the ESC's on my kit and used Turnigy 30amp ESC's. Ive had no problems with the stock motors.
