This was the first time you had a quality representation of the arcade games. This was mind blowing when it came out. Glad I got to experience all the transitions of the video game industry from the beginning to the present.
I had the Colecovision system and loved it. I thought it was very underated for its time. However, although I enjoyed playing Donkey Kong on this, I found the game too slow for my liking. I really enjoyed 'Gorf' on this system though, as I found that fast and adrenlin pumping. However, although the games were pretty good, and replicated most of the arcade games out then, they did not have the feel' of the original arcade games - like games for the later systems have now.
@gmodfan11 Well, they would have to fit in another row of girders, which the screen didn't have room for, so then they'd have to shrink everything, degrading graphics.
My God, I remember my neighbor had this game in the Coleco, our economical situation only allowed us to buy a Sinclair CZ1000 (no sound, B&W, 2k of memory ram), I was green of envy!! what great times playing at my neighbor house but at the same time what a hurting times..haha
im building a nintendo retro collection got gbc,SNES,N64, games for them all i had a sega but gave it to my cousin really (wanted it) so now only the NES and im only 12 all my moey spent on these
My neighbor had this, and I remember vividly just begging - begging to let me play it. The controllers were these awkward hand held sticks. He let me play it once, I remember that I thought it was a real arcade game from the bowling alley. There was this, and Smurfs. Other than the Atari 5200, one of the strangest consoles ever.
@KevinBusomjack Despite 1-color-per sprite; these had to be layered and multiplexed very quickly. But for it's time it was amazing, especially since it accepts nicer controllers than the standard.
Call me crazy, but I prefer the Atari version. I have at home, and even though I REALLY WISH it has the "pie" and "pogo" level, I'm happy with it. It gives me that old school feel, even thought I'm only 13 XD
@TheGoreyparodies agreed, first off, the atari 2600 version is ENDLESS, it only has two levels as well, and the graphics really need better improvement
@DonkeyKongGamer1 Pfft. As if it does. The Atari XL/XE version and Commodore 64 versions are way better than the NES. The NES version doesn't even have the pie level.
I was just remembering going over my friends house to play play Coleco Vision. That was so long ago. After Pong, was Atari the Coleco Vision, the Nintendo, but I think I'm missing one.
I was 14 when this came out and I remember thinking how mind-blowing these graphics were for a home game system. Being able to play something as close to the real-deal at home without plucking in quarter after quarter, unbelievable... I had the 2600 and remember how badly I wanted this system. I didn't get the system and subsequently my interests as a teen went elsewhere. In fact the next console I owned after the 2600 was the Xbox. :-)
Grew up with the invention of video games. Started with pong and when this came out it was so similiar to the arcade . Light years above other games console. Vectrex was also way ahead of its time. I love Atari and its where it all started and had many of years enjoyment.
This was my first game and my first system. I didn't have Atari, so that was unfamiliar to me-I had Caleco Vision. Who would have known that I'd grow up a Donkey Kong fan? Coincidentally, when I bought a Super Ninendo, it came with the first Donkey Kong game. Since then I've played DK Country 1,2,3 and DK for Nintendo 64. This is my franchise.

Colecovision was way ahead of its time. Graphics where very similiar to the arcade version. Without this there would be no playstation. I also had the magnavox odessesy 2 and Vec trec. Kinda spoiled but I did give my friends hours and hours of enjoyment.
1 minute ago i cant STAND this versions controllers even the INTELLIVISONS CONTROLS ARE BETTER the ONLY WAY i can even PLAY THIS PEICE OF IS TO USE AN atari 2600 VCS controllers
I probably logged at least 2000 hours playing this in 1983. If not, more. Just hearing the music takes me right back. I knew all the tricks for level 2. Good times.
This was the best system From the day it came out till Nintendo came out. And yes I think it was better then Atari 5200 with the shit controller. I love the Vectrex as well but all in all colecovision was the only way to experience te arcade at home till Nintendo came out
While this version of DK looks very nice, there's lots of little things about it that feel off, like DK himself being on the wrong side of the first stage, the second stage being Rivets instead of Elevators, the lack of the bouncing spring enemies in Elevators, no musical fanfare for beating a level, and no ending sequence where you actually save Pauline. Maybe they couldn't do all those things on one cart, but even a few would have improved the game quite a bit.
antnee1980, Awesome to see someone with the same view and experiences as me, Smokey the Bear, Cabbage Patch Dolls, Micheal Jackson, Corvettes, Bikes, Dirtbikes, TV shows, Wheel of fortune, Knight Rider, Teddy Ruxpin, etc, etc, LOL! YOU ROCK 200%
Best freakin version ever imo, I had this shit as a kid, my cousins would come over and we would play the snot outta this classic down in the basement. Coleco was the shit back then. Remember the first Rambo movie being out around this time. 80's was the best era to grow up in. Transformers, Penny Racers, GI Joe, Star Wars, Thunder Cats, Hot Wheels, Voltron, Movies, He-Man, Atari and Coleco!
@gamecollect101 I agree with everything you said in your post. I grew up in the eighties and had the same experiences.... Nothing like the eigties... Alot of people dont understand what a unique time it was .. There were so many cartoons,, video games, music videos, cereals, cookies, potato chips.... No health concious stuff lol..... movies.. you name it
I hate that footsteps noise i thought it was just my version lol. Oh and Donkey Kong looks even more different on the arcade machine and theres little skits at the beginning of levels that are missing on the console versions. Arcade Donkey Kong is almost a completely different game
One great tip was that if you stopped momentarity in the middle of the ladder you would go up it faster than just going rung by rung. Just a tip from an ole 80's chick!
Yep, I remember that trick. This was the very first Colecovision game I played, of course tho, it came with it. I see you in all these videos. Haha... You have good taste.
This was the first game I got with my Coleco back in the Christmas of 1982. I actually didn't get to play it for a few days because the system was defective, had to return it.
I played this for months on end. Until Gorf came out for the Coleco...one addiction swapped for the next.
Back in the day, us kids thought this was AMAZING quality. I remember thinking this Donkey Kong was the best home video game I had ever seen. Prior to this home arcade games were REALLY bad. Coleco made a huge leap with this system.
Weird that Donkey Kong is on the other side of the stage.......
Also kind of weird how liberal Nintendo was back then with their titles, but I suppose, they didn't have their own system yet, so games like DK had to be ported.
Hell, this brings back so many memories for me. I used to play this game. It was not exactly like Donkey Kong Arcade, but close enough to it. . Hahaha. I really loved this system. I found it strong, sturdy with great controllers. Never had a problem with it at all.
This is a good version of DK, I can't say it's the best because it only has 3 of the 4 levels in the original arcade. The game was licensed for video game systems to Coleco (Intellivision, 2600) and for computers to Atari. Coleco made the Atari 2600 version as well (only had 2 screens) Atari made the computer versions(Commodore, etc.)and the Atari line 8 bit computers had all four screens. Back then there was a clear distinction between computers and game machines, at least to our parents!
i cannot make it past 4 levels in this version, its so hard, but i think thats mostly the controllers fault, or mine because ive never played with a conrtoller resembling anything like it
Re: Intellivision. Biggest problem with their controllers was the stupid plastic cover you had to slip over the buttons. After five minutes of rigorous clicking, the cover would start to slide off in the middle of action.
The control discs weren't great for north-south east-west control on faster games like DK. It worked okay in Night Stalker because that game had such a leisurely pace.
i dont know this is the best they coul do for a console at the time but it still feels pretty bad i mean kong doesnt even moves around punching his chest
@rikiyamashi do you know how much computers cost in the 80s, microchips were expensive as hell. arcades could afford to be made out of good parts cause they were always sucking in quarters, and they had to make the home consoles affordable for more people
I want to play smurfs rescue but dont function the .rom file into the emulator colecovision, Do you have the file .rom of the smurfs (please tell me, and thanks for answer me).....

Graphics: Well, at least they got Mario right... but all the enemies are one color.
Sound: Well, at least it has background music, but the "jumped over something" sound is too high-pitched. Besides that, great.
Accuracy to the Arcade: No springs in the elevator stage. Oh, well. They were annoying anyway. As for the first stage, it's missing one platform.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Night Stalker was intellivision. This is a Coleco vision. Coleco also had joysticks - not a control disk - like the Matel Intellivision.

i dont know this is the best they coul do for a console at the time but it still feels pretty bad i mean kong doesnt even moves around punching his chest
rikiyamashi 2 years ago
Still, for the consoles of the day it was pretty startling how accurate it was.

@Umma6umma After all this was made by konami

@rikiyamashi do you know how much computers cost in the 80s, microchips were expensive as hell. arcades could afford to be made out of good parts cause they were always sucking in quarters, and they had to make the home consoles affordable for more people

@rikiyamashi
lol,compare it to the ATARI2600 version....XD

I remember the Atari 2600 didn't have the 3rd stage on it. I remember coleco looking and playing so much better.

Why did Coleco think it was necessary to reverse DK's position on the top of the first level?
