I'm a HUGE CV fan...since I was a kid. :) This one definitely takes the cake though, followed by SOTN and the 16-bit iterations; they're all equally good to me.
I'd say ignore the reviewers who play MAYBE the first two levels and pass judgement...the further you get into this game, the more it starts to feel like the old CV games, from the level design to character movements to the gorgeous backdrops and towering castles. By the time you reach the crow witch, it's like visiting an old friend.

God of wars own this game in gameplay, just look some boss battles in god of war and compare them with the boss battles fom this castlevania. But Castlevania Lords of Shadow is not only a game, the story is amazing and original, everything has charisma, even the meaningless enemies, when you fight, you fight for something, you understand Gabriel's feelings. But the Combat cross was being destroyed by Gabriel himself after he beat the forgotten one.. and he himself become Dracula after absorbing the dark power of Laura and forgotten one.. maybe there are still another vampire killer and other hero from the order to fight Gabriel instead..
U know what I love about this game? the characters r not some superhuman warriors just normal humans battling monsters....I miss the old scenarios where humans with no super powers or shit like that kill monsters showing humans as a superior race...2 bad now we cant fight vampires unless we got a rogue vampire on our side or turn into demons or simply get raped till something saves us -_- hell if we cant even survive slow retarded zombies
This game was one of the best games i have played in a llooonnngggg time, around 40 hours of game play, a story better then most movies, and the bosses were just epic. I love this game and would urge just about anyone to get it
This was such a great masterpiece, it captures the essence of being alone and fighting for something you truly desire, I think it's VERY underrated, you can't have a noob who only plays god of war to review this game, I play god of war and i love them all but this is nothing like it except for some QTE here and there, the level of detail and sharpness of every level is just outstanding, i wish this game gets a sequel, it truly deserves it...

I've only started it around an hour ago, so may definitely change. But so far, the game gives me a very old fashion feel... you know, gameplay mechanics that have been discarded long ago. I find it extremely linear. The levels are designed in an overly simple way... there's basically one path to follow. The camera is bad, and GOW is very present
@smileyxoriana Plus, it's still pretty much Castlevania for me. It's all about a man and his whip with the mantle to fight evil creature. The only thing is their is no Dracula as a antagonist but my little finger told me that Cox will fixed that in the next game (won't give any spoiler here)

The closest games we heave to castlevania nowdays are Deamon's souls and dark souls, the just get what castlevania is all about (the NES and SNES ones) Sense of weakness, the constant tension, the genius enemy placement and level design, the constante tension and threat. that's what makes a good castlevania game.

@jbetenbender It's a separate cannon. Take it as a new direction on the series and you'll really enjoy it. It still retains staples like fun combat, great soundtrack, beautiful art, and manages to strike an emotional chord which is something I think the CV games have been trying to do for a while. It's really good.

@damascus07 Absolutely and without question. It has combat mechanics that are about as polished as a Devil May Cry game and the story lasts for days without getting stale. Plus, it's ****ing beautiful.

The gameplay is amazing and well organized. everything on the controller is used, and you do stuff like double tap the left stick to run, switch between two magics (holding them down for a couple super attacks too), holding down the control stick to absorb more magic (depending on which one you hold down you absorb black or white magic mp) the combat includes many many many combos (more than god of war) (continued in next comment)

@squirrelavengerr31 The only thing it has in common with GoW is the whip-like weapon but the way it's used is completely different as well as just about everything else in this game.
The game have nothing to do with gow, Gabriel is way better than Kratos, he has a story, he has FEELINGS, and he's not a beast that search only killing everything and being the most powerful at any cost.
Actually the game is an excelent succesor of Castlevania IV(the best with SotN), the castlevanias from IGA are abandonned.

This game is amazing and is always evolving in every chapter with both the combat and land scape. This game also has a solid and EPIC soundtrack. Graphics AMAZING. Story is nothing award winning but has its real EPIC moments and its a long game. On the Xbox it has 2 discs. Once you complete this game do NOT skip the credits something truely RANDOM but AMAZING happens at the end. this game brings back SOLID memories of last year its that GOOD! Was a great game. It's certainly more in the same vein of GoW and SotC but I never had those thoughts while playing and I personally found all 20 hours of CLoS to be more fun and challenging than those games. Patiently waiting for the sequel but i'm hoping it will not be set in modern times like the ending suggests and hopefully the fighting mechanics will evovle and not remain exactly the same.
To me the Canstlevania series have never been one of those "epic" stories, but rather just suspenseful and mysterious games, with lots of bizarre monsters/ghosts.... Kind of like how in all Metroid games Samus is always alone, you know?

Both 2D and 3D games (Now for Castlevania) work fine and sell a lot. About the storyline... well, I always thought it was an excuse for the game until LoS. I loved the story compared with the old, cheesy plots we were so used in the classic games. I know it's only my opinion, but I would say that this is the way to go for the franchise. :D

The closest games we heave to castlevania nowdays are Deamon's souls and dark souls, the just get what castlevania is all about (the NES and SNES ones) Sense of weakness, the constant tension, the genius enemy placement and level design, the constante tension and threat. that's what makes a good castlevania game.

@jbetenbender It's a separate cannon. Take it as a new direction on the series and you'll really enjoy it. It still retains staples like fun combat, great soundtrack, beautiful art, and manages to strike an emotional chord which is something I think the CV games have been trying to do for a while. It's really good.

I really enjoyed LoI especially the story, so I'm glad to hear that it's still canon; cuz if it weren't it'd crush my heart ='(. several critics say it doesn't stay true to the Castlevania franshise and that's probly true
(I've bought the game and didn't regret it... but I do like the GoW-mechanic... that did help to warm up for this game)

@Kakyo01 The environments are beautiful, and involve parts where you have to do some neat climbing (something god of war didn't have). Also a good amount of puzzles. There is also the soundtrack. The music is breathtaking and perfect for this game. There are many boss fights/mini boss fights, at least 5 days worth of gameplay, and challenging trials to complete for 110% completion. PSN also features two additional chapters that take place after you beat the game.

The gameplay is amazing and well organized. everything on the controller is used, and you do stuff like double tap the left stick to run, switch between two magics (holding them down for a couple super attacks too), holding down the control stick to absorb more magic (depending on which one you hold down you absorb black or white magic mp) the combat includes many many many combos (more than god of war) (continued in next comment)

The game have nothing to do with gow, Gabriel is way better than Kratos, he has a story, he has FEELINGS, and he's not a beast that search only killing everything and being the most powerful at any cost.
Actually the game is an excelent succesor of Castlevania IV(the best with SotN), the castlevanias from IGA are abandonned.
But the game has AMBIENCE(like CIV) you feel like Gabriel, his sadness and hate that can domain him at any moment. Every single enemy is charismatic here, not likeGOW HATERS

This game is amazing and is always evolving in every chapter with both the combat and land scape. This game also has a solid and EPIC soundtrack. Graphics AMAZING. Story is nothing award winning but has its real EPIC moments and its a long game. On the Xbox it has 2 discs. Once you complete this game do NOT skip the credits something truely RANDOM but AMAZING happens at the end. this game brings back SOLID memories of last year its that GOOD! Was a great game. It's certainly more in the same vein of GoW and SotC but I never had those thoughts while playing and I personally found all 20 hours of CLoS to be more fun and challenging than those games. Patiently waiting for the sequel but i'm hoping it will not be set in modern times like the ending suggests and hopefully the fighting mechanics will evovle and not remain exactly the same.

To me the Canstlevania series have never been one of those "epic" stories, but rather just suspenseful and mysterious games, with lots of bizarre monsters/ghosts.... Kind of like how in all Metroid games Samus is always alone, you know?

@Envy987001 Yeah, but it's still gothic and beautiful....where in GOW it's greek. Also, the game takes a bit from Shadow of the Colossus and let's face it....GOW stole ideas from Shadow of the Colossus by climbing larger than life beasts and slaying them.
Shadow of the Colossus is the TRUE innovator in videogame art. All others follow. The rest are just more mainstream which doesn't mean they are better.
Shadow of the Colossus = greatest game ever made!

@GrovyleXShinyCelebi What? The fact that they made Lord of Shadows doesn't imply that they will stop making 2D games. It's basically like the Mario franchise. Both 2D and 3D games (Now for Castlevania) work fine and sell a lot. About the storyline... well, I always thought it was an excuse for the game until LoS. I loved the story compared with the old, cheesy plots we were so used in the classic games. I know it's only my opinion, but I would say that this is the way to go for the franchise. :D
