playing NEY is not forbidden by islam. but guitar en darbuka or that kind is forbidden. Ney and Tef (kind of toumburine) are not forbidden because they give your boddy and mind rest.

can you please tell me what your ombreshure (mouth) is like cuz i got 7 at hoem and i cant play!!! i play flute at lvl 5 standerd which is very very good.. but i cant play this intrument why ?

hi, my friend. The position of your lips should be like blowing to a candle. And the angle of your lips should be near 45 degrees to the ney. Try again like that. I hope this information will be helpful. You know Ney is an empty pipe and it is hard to make sound. Regards.

maybe my ney is incomplete? it doesnt have a mouth peice at the top it is just one hollow peice of pipe which an innerchamber? :( i cant get sound

it is normal. ney is an instrument as you described. The mouth piece is for protecting lips, it is not very helpful for getting sound. You can also play the ney without mouth piece. It is not easy to get sound from ney. Where did you buy it? Best regards.

i bought it from lebanon it cost 100 american dollars for a set of 5 ? does this seem reasonable ? its a real nye i think :(... its fustrating blowing into the ney for an hour and getting no sound... how hard should i blow and is most of the air going into the ney or is it just a little? ..

@221532008 It's not necessarily incomplete. That little black piece is called a "bashpare" (I know i spelt it wrong, but that's how you say it ) and is a trademark of Turkish style neys. Egyptian and Arabic neys don't have one. I've always heard that you have to pretend you're whistling to get a sound. For me it was just trial and error. Persian (Iranian) style neys are a whole different kettle of fish. You have to put one edge between your front teeth. I still can't figure Persian neys out...
