Yup. I am so excited for that to be my legacy. I can't wait to send my sons and neighbors into Iran and Pakistan and ruin both. What the hell is wrong with us. Are we insane?
@85ccmaster@85ccmaster A guy in a movie? You couldn’t even run with an extended arm whilst holding a pistol in the real jungle. One of our guys, a cherry, tried to throw a frag in proper jungle but it came right back like a boomerang killing him and three others. Blue-on-blue?
Evidence that I was a "Crew Chief"-Proper term was CE or Crew Engineer. Dustoffs assigned to Med Companies didn't carry M-60's. Logbooks were green. Part of the main Rotor head that controlled Cyclic. The fight was around FB6 on a ridge SW and above Ben Het and Dak Seang. April 71 Searching for downed zoomie.
I spent 3 tours in the left door of a dustoff and I can tell you we lost a hellofa lotta guys to "Chuck"! we averaged 8-10 KIA to enemy fire out of 40 or so flight crews, I myself had to "Run Thru the Jungle outa Laos in 71, something like 6 miles to a base called Ben Het north of Dak To. @MomsApplePieEater Many a time we welcomed he DO’s.That meant no walk-out for us. But a run-out? Fuck that for plan! We would have been fucked before we reached the 1st click out, even if on tracks. Humidity, it fucked the lungs you see, even in the fittest. The Walk –out was the only way other than just sit on your ass and wait for an E-Vac. Or Chuck.
@GimpyFacRTU Yeah. A four to six meter burst when working as rifle pairs during an ATC is fine and acceptable, but a six mile flat-out run through the boonie is super-hero stuff by any measure. LOL. Only one conclusion available, he is talking shit.
@MomsApplePieEater Yep.The very best I could manage, flat out running like a Full- Back trying to impress the cheer leader with the largest pussy outside Phu Bie was two klicks weapon and light allice only before I was so fucked-up I puked. And that is the lesson for real. Puke, shit, piss and out goes the fluid then you are well and truly fucked in the boonie. Sup on the jungle nectar and hell will invade our guts. The NVA butchered men, women, and children to get the south to fight. There's absolutely no question in my mind that they would have done exactly the same thing here in the USA.
@FlashmanWill as a freshman in college i am only 19 but my history profesor was about 2 miles away when that ammo dump went up.said that they all thought the viet cong had gotten their hands on some nukes.
@MomsApplePieEater More like a disrespectful idiot with an X-box. Charlie would have eaten him alive and came back for a second serving.Do you remember the smell of it all? And I aint talking about that stupid movie bullshit about Napalm in the morning, I am talking about the real life. Disemboweled hot guts, rotten flesh, blood, smashed plants, dead animals and the grunts craped-on pants. The essence of war lingering in the nostrils after a real good stonking by mortars. Theirs and ours.
@westernmike What lingers in my mind is the din of it. At crescendo of sound so deafening it simply can’t be imagined nor re-enacted by any movie maker how hard they may try. There was an artillery duel between our guys whose heavy weapons were on barges in the river and chucks on an a hill. The exchanging rounds flew all day and well into the night. It only stopped when some fast movers laid a carpet of WP and Nap over chucks positions. This also took out all the guys in our forward positions.
@GimpyFacRTU The biggest bang I ever heard was in 67 when a basketball ship dropped its load by mistake straight into an ammo dump. We were about four klicks away building a berm and still we felt the blast wave. One joker claimed it rattled the windows of the higher-highers in Da Nang, and blew Van Thieu off of his commode. LOL.
@westernmike Hey, I remember that bang. It has been deemed one of,if not the largest of the war. I was closer at two Klicks and could see it and have it my diary as going off at 2030 hours? There was a phenomenal concussion followed by a gargantuan flash and deafening explosion. The shockwaves and gust-up were incredible. It looked and felt like a volcano had exploded. It certainly stunned the senses.
@westernmike Yes I remember the smells more than anything else, The smell of sh** being burned in diesel fuel, the smell of JP4. I can tell the smell of human blood from the smell of animal blood, Explosions weren't fiery like you see on TV, just black puffs.Excrement Urine, the sight of a huge GI being carried to us, both legs blown off. Burned in my brain is that sight of 2 red headlights as he came close. The smell of wintergreen the dinks used elderly with black teeth beetlenut
Chucks mortar propellants were paper-like discs. One day a guy committed suicide by dropping a lit cigarette into a stack of boxes filled with these. Quietly humming to himself no one had taken any notice of him.The resulting blast had a 70 meter burst radius and took out everything and everyone within its reach. Including a mule stacked with captured 61mm mortar rounds, this in turn gave a larger secondary blast which ni-on vaporized a Rio and six-pack of combat engineers plus the mules driver.
gimpy you know that dont suprise me.i knew a guy that got it taking a damn dump...someone accidentally backed a truck over the building and you know what theyre made up of...go figure...
Nice job although at 1:30-1:53 you flipped the sequence in the wrong order (sorry i love this movie and you said "if somethings out of place speak your mind"
exactly.the..ahem..safe height now isnt really much safer..radar still means rads.duhhh...did you have a lot of probs once you got back home from that?ive talked to some from desert storm who were under some of the newer equipment and got a full dose of the stuff..weird crap..
@swanderer01 If there is a long lasting effect I am so far not personally aware of it.Something that people overlook regarding our casualty numbers.A a long standing urban myth is they all died by the action of chuck. In fact it would amaze them if they actually knew the truth of the numbers who didn’t. A few of the more bizarre ones in my unit were by shark attack, sting ray, water buffalo, choking on a joint whilst hysterically laughing, killed by a life preserver and even suicide by balloon.
czotie you can count yourself very lucky.you are seeing posts from people who lived a time movies can only dramatise about.listen to this because when we are gone there will be only small mentions in the history books and the realities of what went on will be coated over.be honored these war vets, both male and female are responding on here like this.and thank your stars you live in a country where freedom allows this to happen;freedom has a high price.honor it.
sorry gimp i wasnt yellin atcha.dont stop talkin out here on account of me.kids now gotta know stuff before this is all nothing but history before we are.
@swanderer01 There is no shame in the crying time. Best to get it out of the way before the next action. Without it you can even loose what little edge you have to survive. Some guys looked on it as a penance, others a blessing. By the time we reached the C line we had lost over a third of those who had left the start line but still we poured over their forward positions as a breaking, unstoppable green wave. A military-green tsunami. For it is simply all down to the numbers. Theirs, and ours.
@GimpyFacRTU very true.now that ive had time to look back i can see where i screwed up on some things, and did right on others.im not sorry for what i did,im proud of it,and if i was able,id do it all over again for my country without a second thought.
@swanderer01 Yep, as time moves along attitudes, tactics and SO’s change and evolve. I know it will be a small thing to mention, but for instance back then there was no recommended safe height for the radar pods. Many a time we complained of our heads ”heating up” when standing next to scanning radar during a patrol in the smaller RPB’s. I know now we were in fact being cooked. XD.
yes i have.i didnt like it and i still have nightmares about the things done and some of the things i had to do to people.but i did it and im still freaking here to tell about it.the cool comment referred to the picture not to the assault situation.as far as the crying situation,i couldnt then and i still cant.i havent been able to bawl for many years
exactly.no two of us react to noise and agression the same...our natural response is to freak and run or cower down,i think were taught that way,but me,if you do that youre gonna piss me off and i charge.i think thats why they stuck me out there like that..that and they liked the way i blew people up....but i do agree with you on a lot of it.
@swanderer01 Have you taken part in a frontal assault with positions in-depth? There is nothing “cool” about it.Especialy when there are women defending. The fight-through is the most harrowing,no, absolute soul-destroying, thing you can ever, ever, be asked to do. But it has to be done. The crying time for everyone comes long after the re-group.
lol gimpy that was cool.i was lucky,i managed to dodge most everything thrown at me,and what imanaged to rig nobody dodged, the beauty of explosives, you know.shit can really get weird,y know.
my dad was in vietnam...he remembered seeing his buddy stand up and attempt to run forward...and fall back to the ground in five pieces...and that was in a clear patch somewhere..he didnt say much about much, but movies do piss me off after what hes told me...you have to hear or see it firsthand to get it.
That damn war scared the hell out of me, on my knees every night, guys coming back with hair raising stories, still had 6 months to go. Feel damn sorry for the fine young men that did go, thankful as I can be to have gotten out when I did. I hope the devils that cooked up that rotten war face hell every day.
@Hatinonthehaters We Kicked there asses out of the Cities and we won the Major battles Khe Sahn,Hue,Me Chong,E.T.C. but it was Politcs and my both my Grandpas and 5 of my Great Uncles served and they say that the VC sucked at fighting because they couldnt clean there weapons so We Won Casualty wise but not Political Wise
@GimpFacRTU@pelum940; Thanks for every thing you did guys!!!!! Its heros like you why I have a 68 cougar parked in my drive way and I couldnt thank you enough... TAKE CARE VETTS!!!!!!!!
Man, I don't know who you are but you have a thing for vid. I will look at all your stuff. I was there, you did a good music/vid. Real is death. But, You did a good.
No one ever “ran” through the jungle for under the canopy it was quite impossible to do so. Even walking at times became so difficult we had to crawl for many yards upon yards under bayonet thorn which tore everything that came in contact with it to shreds, including flesh. On we would go, slithering and sliding, through stinking ooze which was laced with disgusting tropical diseases and blood sucking, biting parasites.
That was just a little part of the reality, and not the movie.
@Pelum940 I served with 1st ANGLICO (Riverine) from 70 -73, and we lost more guys to waterborne diseases and than any action Chuck ever forced upon us. Monday pills were fine but there were so many diseases in the water it was quite impossible to avoid them entirely. If you went over the side in an action and swallowed river water, then it was guaranteed you would be infected with something. Working the side canals meant human feces floated on the surface in abundance.
@GimpyFacRTU My dad got his draft notice at the end of the war, I'm glad he didn't go. He's only like 3 or 4 years younger than you according to the age on your channel... But yeah, you can't sit in a 74 degree house on your PC telling everyone how Vietnam was. People like you experienced it
@planb1532190 He,you, and all of your family should be eternally grateful he didn’t go. But saying that, I would have given everything I had not to have missed it, once I was there but not before. You never live so intensely as when you are at war. After it everything in life becomes so bland. In his private moments, inner thoughts, I recon you’re pop would wish he had been there, with us, and all of the other grunts. And that my friend is as candid as it ever gets.
@GimpyFacRTU my great or just regular uncle fought in the marines in nam too. He saw something he doesnt like to talk about too . He and the lieutenant had to get off the helicopter and the lieutenant didnt take his MEDALS AND RIBBONS OFF and when they slid down the line my uncle felt something on the side of his face and turned to his rightand the lieutenant had NO HEAD. They also had to kill a kid about 10 years old since he had a grenade and was running toward them. Semper Fi.
@Musicdog81 The "headless man "scenario was much more common than most people realize. Mortars tended to decapitate when either primed for air-burst or when used in jungle or semi-jungle.
@GimpyFacRTU we come from a long line of soliders,my dad army infantry,me,navy female seal in explosives,my uncles korea and ww2.all of us saw combat in one time or another.my other uncle was a marine.get me,though,a female in a non nurse combat situation, you shouldve heard the ruckus over that one.they thought id fold...any thoughts on that one gimpyFac?I mean the kind that wont curl the kids ears?lol
@swanderer01 What do I think about women in the fighting zone? Not a problem if they don’t create a problem. The Brits have banned women from serving in the Royal Marines (other than for band duty), and in their Parachute Regiments. The reason being that during a forward assault, when you are close in firing pistols and hacking away, women don’t tend to fare that well .Only once have I come across women defending during a forward assault on a fixed position. They stood their ground till the end.
@swanderer01 If you are interested. My Channel picture is an original. I am the guy standing next to the Radar Pod in tiger stripes wearing the boonie hat and smoking a cigarette. I gave up smoking in 73 after being shot through the lung by a seven year old kid who had picked up a discarded M-16, and began playing soldiers with his sisters at Phu Loi. They lived in a compound next to the 11th CAB,1st Av. Brigade so it was one of their rifles. You could then say I was in truth a Blue-on-Blue. XD!
@GimpyFacRTU Sweetie I wish we could stop the scum that made you subject to horrors you would not even speak about. To much we back here dont know about.
I still dont get how that guy who went to stab charlie sheen didn't get burnt by the napalm strike or any of the others - and how did they sleep through it ?
Oh crap... it posted my response to cole12890 several times... sorry!
Idiot walking. To all you Vietnam Vets out there, I was a kid, you weren't much older than me. I saw all the teenage boys in my neighborhood get drafted and leave. I never saw any of them again. I'm really sorry. I know it was hell... something I wish no one ever had to experience. I have a whole lot of respect and empathy for you guys. I'm a vet and my son is active duty in Iraq right now. Very scared for him.
@Czotie Hope your instructor recognized that you aced the project and gave you an excellent grade. Besides, you uploaded it the day before my birthday. That autta count for something. At least for me it does!!!
The United States pulled out of the Vietnam war. We did not lose it. Technically, we were not at war, we were advisors but the Congressional approval to fight in Vietnam was not given. If anyone lost it was the people of Laos and Cambodia who came under Communist rule after the war.
God, I hated those scenes. Bring back some dark memoiries. Love yr video tho, nice work. That war, and that movie, brought out the worst in everyone. "Old Cody Junior took me over, said you're gonna find the world is smolder'in". "And if you get lost, come on home to Green River."
South Vietnam which was capitalist, was losing their fight with North Vietnam which was communist. At the time the U.S. thought that communism was going to take over the world(this was the "domino theory", where when a nation became communist, nearing regions would soon follow). So after the deaths of over two million Vietnamese, and hundreds of thousands of others in Laos and Cambodia, and about 60,000 American deaths and countless missing, the theory was proved false so we left.
two of my friends went to Nam...they were Canadians...only one came home...I know people were not kind to these guys and other Vets..they deserved so much from us...God bless ..all the men and women..who are still fighting for our freedom
Man. My friend's uncle who fought in 'nam used to describe "Zippo Raids" that he went on. He told about one where they needed to sweep a small village and there was a squad pinned down. They were flying in on Hueies as re-enforcements and the pilots came in low. He was a door gunner and he just kept shooting. Then they dropped him off with his squad, and they burned the village to the ground. It may not sound good, but thats how this war was fought.
I wish I had your skills with video. It was a good presentation, but it only showed American soldiers as brutal. It was a brutal conflict on both sides and media had just gotten involved into our conflicts. If you send us to war, let us fight them as we must. It does reduce casualties in the "long run".
To all my bros from 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry 4th Div.; It is all good. Songs of Motown and CCR helped me make it through that hell. Going to the wall this Labor Day; just hoping it will rain so people will not see my tears as I touch my buddies names.
i dont want to hate America, its my country, but with the choices the congress and presedent make it makes me really crave the 60's and 70's. even tho im still in high school
@cole12890 Our current congress and Pres make bad decisions, but craving the wisdom of the 60-70's is a bad choice when it comes to our government. Most any choice by a government is bad or atleast misguided. The government needs to limit their actions upon the country, it's not their place.
@321cerberus Um... there was a second Vietnam War... in Japan? I don't think that this movie or video is about WWII so... It was actually on three fronts. The Pacific, which did involve Japan, the North African front and the European.
Nice job on the vid. Youngsters who haven't seen "Platoon" probably have no idea about Nam and jungle warfare. Not crazy about the bad guys and the war crimes. It was extremely rare. Mostly our guys tried to help the poor villagers escape...unless they were harboring the enemy. In that case, well you picks your side and you asked for it.

@smthcrg22 Quang Tri 70/71, go piss-off with the bull,XD! Quang Tri was but a little kids bang-bang side show compared to Khe Ta Laou and the ARVN actions at 714/ 882.
@smthcrg22 Srsly? Anybody who got out of there alive deserves a medal. My BIL was there. In a foxhole. For a long time. He'll be gone soon. Agent Orange and napalm take their toll. Not looking forward to his funeral. He was, is, and always will be a Marine. Semper Fi.
Pleiku and Quang Ngai Provinces Nov. 68 till Jan. 70 14 months of pure hell. I remeber the ambush night some were quiet as church and other we were running through the jungle for our lives.
@tnsodman Yep, some things do tend to shrink with age. I went back in 98 and found that some of our CONEX Hooch’s had survived the ravages of time. We in the Corps did build them to survive but never expected pigs to live in them. But then again Charlie always did call us pigs anyhow. XD.
This video makes me proud to be an American. I showed this video to a veteran and he broke down. He said that his only comforts during the war were his radio, platoon, and God.
@m0derNpwnge Just our of curiosity, why would this video make you proud to be an American? The Americans are destroying poor villager's food, burning their houses, and taking their children at the end. Didn't you watch it all the way through or do you think that's cool?
Thanks for replying. To answer your question, I didn't like it when they took the children. In truth, I was mostly referring to CCR , and the horrors of the Vietnam War. I was also referring to the rape, devastation, and the death that occurred to both north and south Vietnamese alike. It was only a bunch of stupid rejects that did this. Hope this answers your question...

@m0derNpwnge Yeah, Are you quite sure that's what he said? Or was it his Chieu Hoi gook Numba one Mama San,CONEX Hooch and his DEROS. All thee are by far more beleivable than the other bullshit.XD.
@m0derNpwnge I understand, but why die ''or worse'', for the man with the power and money he could not care less, he feeds on Patriotic sentiment, don't get me wrong I love my country as you love yours and if it was invaded I would fight to defend it but why is it that the U.S. always seems to be doing the invading. Americans have been at war some where or other since Plymouth... It ain't freedom, it ain't democracy, its about power it's about control that's what its all about............ sadly

LOL.
westernmike 1 month ago 27

XD.

@planb1532190 He,you, and all of your family should be eternally grateful he didn’t go. But saying that, I would have given everything I had not to have missed it, once I was there but not before. In his private moments, inner thoughts, I recon you’re pop would wish he had been there, with us, and all of the other grunts. And that my friend is as candid as it ever gets.

XD!

The United States pulled out of the Vietnam war. We did not lose it. Technically, we were not at war, we were advisors but the Congressional approval to fight in Vietnam was not given. If anyone lost it was the people of Laos and Cambodia who came under Communist rule after the war.

@cole12890 Our current congress and Pres make bad decisions, but craving the wisdom of the 60-70's is a bad choice when it comes to our government. Most any choice by a government is bad or atleast misguided. The government needs to limit their actions upon the country, it's not their place.
