Again so much regconition in Gerry's way of thinking, his way of life.... And he wanted to be an engine driver when he grew up.... Me too.... But I couldn't be that, so now I'm a deep sea diver (in other words, I'm diving through the seas of my mind and soul and of those of all the other people; without a real destination)
That does bring back memories from long ago. My ex played in the Humblebums backing band when they went touring. I think he got the job because he worked at Transatlatic records anyway, Magical times. I was only 18 and felt intimidated by Billy but Gerry was really sweet. This song has been in my head all day. I am sorry for the reason i remembered it. Bye Gerry
One of the songs I sung myself long ago. Admired Gerry for his unique voice and wonderful songs. His heart has run dry and he is not going to be an engine driver as he pointed out in Rick Rack. Who knows what the day will bring it could bring anything. Who knows if we ll still be here we could be there. Today my heart cries for a friend I had and never met.
I would bet my last penny that this is actually Billy's "Studio (Pop Vocal) Voice" - Gerry was completely different! As you can imagine - I have studied Billy's Voice and I'm sure the lead vocal on this is The Big Yin!
Oh wow, seems so long ago since I heard this song. I stumbled on it just browsing You Tube. You have some great posts. 5***** at least, and 10 if it was possible ;-)
I don't know for certain, but I read somewhere that although these songs were released on The Humblebums albums, Gerry and Billy actually recorded several of them seperately.
SilverWolfMoon, i cannot thank you enough for putting these Humblebums videos on... Its just good to come across someone else that has even heard of them.. I'm proud to be a humblebums fan, especially to say im only 15
Heard it on BBC Radio 2 on the 4.3.09 and thought it was brilliant i may only be twelve but i love old songs folk songs Wurzels, John Tams you name it and i will probably like it.
Hello Andy, you should be 14 by now, and great folks enjoy gfood music at whatever age. I am 50 to day, but when I was playing these songs at secondary school I was 14-15.
Here in Cameroon, that is in Africa, Gerry washed some lulling smoothness into our young brains and this music today is also fully enjoyed by my children.
I heard this song about 20 years ago, and it stuck in my head. Now thanks to the internet, I can hear it again. Didn't know it was Gerry Rafferty. Thank you.
brilliant song...so simple but beautiful

Rick rack, rickety rack
See the train go along the track
When I grow up I want to be an engine driver
But if I can't be that I'll be a deep sea diver.
My father says that I must always work on the land
And I never disagreed when I'd see him lift his hand
Mother thinks that I should be a carpenter to trade
That I could fill my house with the things that I had made.

@amir497 6th line should be "And I'd never disagree ..."

Wonderful song - love Gerry Rafferty's voice and his lyrics have meaning. "Like a bird on a tree - I just want to be free.." Thank you for sharing

Distinctive voice of Gerry Rafferty, but where are the dulcet tones of Billy Connolly?

@SilverWolfMoon That is so sad - could they not get on together?
MsBkirk 9 months ago
@MsBkirk It may just be that they each had some songs they had worked on themselves, and decided to include them on the albums.

Billy was great!.
They should have given him an album deal atleast!. Last I heard, over 30 years ago now,he was living as a wino.
He must be long dead by now.
Sad!...
