The Census is written in the Constitution. Maybe there could be some cost cutting measures to make the Census cheaper but cutting the Census entirely isn't going to happen.
Maybe the government mailing all those letters helps prop up the US Postal service and maybe it is a necessary reminder to the busy folks out there. Either way it is a far cheaper alternative than the tens of milions it cost for every one percent that do not send in their census form. Plus it's in the Constitution. Thank goodness for the census records. They have helped me immensely in my genealogy research of my family. I believe this census asks the least questions than any of the census in the past two centuries. If you don't like the letters fill out our census. People who don't fill them out are the ones who are wasting our money.

They have determined that sending this notification letter in advance save them money and gives them more accuracy when sending the actual form. They don't know exactly where everybody is living, and want to make sure close to 100% delivery.

If you hit a city with the letter. Those that did not get it may hear about the letter and contact the census and ask where their letter is. Additionally people may be looking for it and fill it out sooner and send it back being prepared for it. If they don't get one after a time they may contact the census for it.

I just went to the US Census Bureau's website & found out that 120 million households received this "2010 Census Advance Letter." That's 120 million sheets of paper! 120 million envelopes! Not to mention the postage.

Maybe it's because they are hiring a whole bunch of those unemployed people, and don't you know someone is employed because their job is to send you those letters. Although sending mail about mail is stupid. it may seem like government waste but if you knew any thing about economics you'd see that lots more government spending is needed in times of recession.

The Census is to enuumerate and keep track of human property. All citizens have a bounty on their heads and are used as collateral for loans and debt payments. The census is to keep track of the collateral.
Now, a massive debt has been accumulated and you bet they want to ensure every person (citizen or not) can be used to assure the lenders that all slaves are accounted for (illegal residents help greatly with this number).

I thought that was kind of weird myself. And the census only asks how many people live in your home. And what nationality they came from. A lot of paper for such a minute amount of information. It's laughable that so many people are actually having argumants of whether they should fill out the whole census form. This happened in the 70 census to. People were saying it was an invasion of privacy to count people. This countries arguments and government get stupider everyday.

Interesting you complain about unemployment and that the US Census Bureau is hiring more people to work. Hiring a lot more people to work, paying them good wages. 15+ dollars an hour wages. It also does does it job fast and more accurately then the rest of the world census efforts. You also complain about the piece of paper again informing you you need to take the census and should expect it. The ad campaign and leaflets are saving thousand of man hours and countless dollars by lessening in person visits to take the ten minuet survey.

The point is the governments waste of money sending out a letter to let you know you're gonna get a letter in the mail.. Not only that, but YOUR information is not required on the census. The ONLY information required on the census is how many people live in your household.. any other information about you or your family (names, sex, race, phone #, whether you own/rent your home, etc) is IRRELEVANT and UNCONSTITUTIONAL and should NOT be filled out.

Environmentalists are proposing that we recycle paper by soaking it, then pressing it. Then using this product as toilet paper (DISGUSTING).
My hypothesis for paper recycling is as follows: We evaporate (burn) the paper, use the burning process to generate electricity, and use the "waste" product to grow more paper trees. This would be preferable to using recycled toilet paper.

How do you get a persons personal info from a fake census? The census is returned to a government address in a postage paid envolope. If someone is willing to send the census back addressed to Bubba, 69 Fake St, Barnesville, GA, then they deserve to have there info stolen.

The Census Bureau has been discussing this many times.
They have determined that sending this notification letter in advance save them money and gives them more accuracy when sending the actual form. They don't know exactly where everybody is living, and want to make sure close to 100% delivery.
They should have included an explanation so the regular folks don't get upset and think the Government is being wasteful.

If federal agents come to my home asking me to fill out the 2010 census then they will be politely asked to vacate my property....immediately. I was like..."lets see...if a stamp costs 44 cents, and they sent that letter to 100 million households, thats 44 million just in postage. I've read the census. The census is not all about getting fair money. Its also about making sure that the electoral college and that the US house of reps are shared equally by population per state. This means California will take a few more losses this census on reps. Losing out to other states in the Rock mountain areas.

I was unprepared for the letter that was a notification of the imminent sending of the next letter. Next decade the government needs to send a letter notifying me that they are going to send a letter that will prepare me for the mailing of the census letter, that way I won't have a heart attack when it comes in the mail.

I agree with Celtic Rejet there are signs that some are waking up - but it did frighten me here in UK when I went to my local supermarket during the bad weather, and the shelves were empty of basics like bread - people were panic buying - just shows how fragile everything is. This weekend i am having visitors from the Texas - in a phone call they knew nothing about the earth quake in Chile and when i asked about the economy in America thay said things are fine - they work in a bank!!!

I actually think sending out a letter of the census coming is a good idea.
If you hit a city with the letter. Those that did not get it may hear about the letter and contact the census and ask where their letter is. Additionally people may be looking for it and fill it out sooner and send it back being prepared for it. If they don't get one after a time they may contact the census for it.

Then - if USA follows the UK example - when the analysis comes out, the first item will be a demonstration that a 10% sample is as representative as the whole and that justified throwing 90% of the forms in the bin without so much as glancing at them! The scariest part about this is that this is our governments best attempt at this process. Getting a country wide headcount can be difficult but the concept is simple.

Having worked on the 2000 Census, color me a bit surprised that they're hiring MORE people to do this job! Back in the 2010 pre-planning stages 10 years ago, they were discussing ways to do more things with less workers, especially with the advent of pocket-PCs & remote-linking. It baffles me that they're still mailing out paper forms to every household and that we can't fill these out online. Anyways, I share your frustration.
