  • Thank You

    HVACS.CA

  • Lmao

  • Tequila

  • Somebody'd better be dead...LOL

  • you get the midnight calls too! cool

  • @jetpilotdds lol

  • You guys are nuts!!! I love it!!!

  • Love this video!! Will post on our blog and fan page. Joe - Rebel Refrigeration

  • @RebelRefrigeration Thanks.

  • Is'nt that the furnace that Norman tried reparing, @4:30?

  • @marshalljimduncan Yes, it is. lol

  • sorry for questioning, but what if the earth is not correctly connected??????

surely a triple check across the neutral or between phases could help your viewers. maybe a prove-test-prove method would help ensure your home handyman viewers to avoid a tickle.

  • @myHemicoupe It's much safer to check the voltage to ground. Checking across the phases can be misleading if you have a dead phase.

  • I'm laughing my head off at this video. This is by far the funniest ac video I had seen.

  • @AcTecJr Thanks for watching.

  • You only use a sight glass with an expansion valve. And you never charge a system using the a sight glass. Use superheat and subcooling to charge.

  • I live in Las Vegas, temps reach 115 to 120 in the summer..So if I install sight glass run unit for some time untill unit settles down then top off untill sight glassis clear would I be pretty close to correct charge as if I used to super heat method..Thanks DrZarkloff

  • LOL..That poor guy, I thought his wife was going to beat him with that thing she had in her hand ....On a different note Dr..I am putting a new condensing unit in my home, is a site glass a good idea to install and can you charge a unit from the site glass..Thanks....I love all your vids...This is a funny Vid LOL

  • @MrJujubean Yes, you can add a sight glass to the liquid line. It is possible to ball park the charge by using the sight glass as an indicator.

  • @DrZarkloff ..So Doc..do you think I can get an accurate enough charge by the sight glass so my new condensing units will be properly charged, here is what I would do....I would install sight glass, charge unit until glass is almost clear, let unit run for an hour then top off the charge until glass is clear, take FLA Amp reading...

  • I thought I'd seen all of your stuff. This was new one for me and it was HILARIOUS!

  • @PutSome5tankOnIt Thanks for watching. I like putting comedy in my videos.

  • Thank you Dr. Z, your videos always help me to understand different aspects of the trade. I was just approved to take the contractors license exam in HVAC/R, and my code books are on the way.

  • @blissJesus1 Congrats. I wish you the best.

  • hmm, never thought about the run capacitor, thanks hopefully i never have to replace my blower motor in my crawl space, thats an ass of a job.

  • dr. z... whats the importance of trying to keep both meter probes in one hand if possible?

  • It's a safety practice in the event you were to accidentally touch an energised circuit.

  • tnks sir.

  • tnks sir...

  • This is a great skit. bravo!

  • Thanks. It was a lot of fun to make.

  • Your videos have explained alot. Our problem is we have water inside our ducts. We just noticed water dripping from 2 or our ceiling ducts. We opened them and see water on the walls of the flexible ducts. The A/C has been off since September, its 20 degrees today. Did this water accumulate do to a blocked condensate drain or a probem with the A/C machine itself. Also how do we dry these vents?

  • It sounds like you have some really bad air leaks in the duct.

  • Air leaks would allow water into the ducts? Should I replace the ducts?

  • If the ducts are full of mold then it would be a good idea to replace them. Otherwise, just inspect the duct for air leaks and make the necessary repairs.

  • 1000 fow a cumpressa..

  • lol that's funny but real.

  • New blower motor? and he's Looking at the condenser.... hmmm 2:12

  • You forgot LOCK OUT tag out!

  • check that the fan is tight and dont forget to mark your color code for your motor on your main board .

  • Hi I love your videos you have up here . I am tradesman like you . But I have not worked in the trade for 7 years and want to get back in and am finding very hard to do . any help as to how I can get my skills up to date.

  • Dr. Z, do you really sleep with your cap on?

You've covered a lot about electrical safety, but what about handling liquid refrigerant, danger of oxygen and refrigerant oil, safety gear and proper lifting (compressor change-outs), etc. Please make more videos, thanks.

By the way...were those real? or did Taquila have a boob job?

    (Just kidding)

  • I have been know to fall asleep with a cap when I'm too busy to take it off. I'll take your suggestion in consideration.

  • This is a a racist video, full of stereotypes and depictions of certain cultures. This video would have been good if you just kept it simple and less culturally bias .

  • Get real. Wa wa wa. Yes, its got stereotypes, so don't watch SNL, dont watch this, don't watch other youtube videos, live a boring life, go live under a rock. Stop getting so offended with, in my opinion, baseless accusations. Go look up racist, see what it really means. There is a Mexican guy posing as a Mexican and a Black guy, he may not be Mexican for all I Know, all I know is if he acted like a white guy this video would probably be boring, this coming from a white guy. Great video! 5 star

  • Good idea... get lay people to start sticking their fingers into ac units with high voltage and moving parts! What a moron.

  • 07:24, is that what they call lipstick on a pig? Good info and a nice mix of humor to break it up.

  • does condensing coils unit has to match in size evaporating coils unit or it can be different? if yes, to what extend it can be different. when picking compressor for the system, how do i know if it will be powerfull enough to do its job?

  • Payne is a good example of an air conditioner that is usually matched up with a 3 ton air handler and a 2 1/2 ton condensing unit or a 3 1/2 ton air handler and a 3 ton condensing unit. All you have to do is make sure that the metering device is matched with the condensing unit.

  • I believe those Carriers date from 1985-1988. I noticed they use the same type of condenser coil in Trane and GE ac units.

  • have you ever been shocked working on a unit

  • I'd be lying if I said that I hadn't.

  • do you have any mini split a/c videos?

  • Not yet.

  • when

  • I'll have to figure out what to do. Maybe I could swear at the thermostats?

  • I'll have to figure out what to do. Maybe I could swear at the thermostats?

  • are you russian dissent?

  • Actually, I'm a Heinz 57. Starkloff is a German name.

  • but why are you doing all of those videos. i mean they are great but why?. it just because life is getting boring and kids out of the house? or you feel like you reached the point and its time to take it easy? i made a goal to build AC out of scratch. why? because i want challange and do something i will be proud of. thats why i saw all your vids. i will try to keep you updated or maybe ask for advice in the future. thanks

  • It's just a lot of fun for me.

  • LOL That is so funny. LOL Sometimes I want to say the same thing. LOLLLLLLLL

  • I didn't have the challenge in school. I don't know how you'd be able to figure out the rotation. You should be able to figure out the rpm by counting the windings. Look at the colors of the wires for the voltage. Ohm out the windings for the phase.

  • dr z

my instructor in school gave us an unknown soldier packet to identify motors with no data plate, you ever heard of this?

  • Damn do you teach as well?

  • I don't teach people at the school board, just air conditioners.

  • funny and Intelligent

    gracioso e inteligente

    可笑しい (Okashi i) & 知的な(chitekina)

  • Thanks

  • Funny. I just made that run cap video (for techs) and mentioned that typically they don't hold a charge. But in this example of a BAD blower motor, that's one of the exceptions of when a run cap can be storing high voltage ready to bite he who puts his hand in the wrong place! LOL!

This always was and is one of my favorite videos on your channel Dr Z! You sure found some "charactors" to play in this video. It should be on the IFC channel. LOL!

  • Thanks. I hope that you check out the participants in this colab video. They are great.

  • I've checked out some of it a while back. I may have to go have another look see when I get a chance and see what they have been up to.

  • I just wanted to thank you Jim for your informative videos your a brilliant guy and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us

Ive learned alot from you and also love your humor ..I laughed so darn hard and about fell off my chair on that last video I saw .. man your funny.. you made my day .... thanks my friend your the best :)

  • Thanks. That means the world to me.

  • Thanks and I wish you the best of luck.

  • Thanks. It was fun to make.

  • Dr.Z,

Too Funny! That Was Hilarious! Nice Job Man.

    Rock On!

  • he should change those coils on that puron system also before they leak!!! cuz they will!

  • Dude, you should get yourself a copy of NFPA 70E - the National Electrical Safety Code. Even during testing, you should wear PPE: insulated rubber gloves, flame retardant clothes, hard hat with blast shield to protect against arc flash, etc. If you de-energize upstream of the unit, lock out and tag out the source of disconnect. Yeah it's a hassle, especially when it's hot during the summer, but it's the safest way. BTW, I like your videos.

  • Thanks.

  • Hey,Mark

I'd Like To See You That Video.

  • Hey,Mark

I'd Like To See You in That Video! You Know it all Huh?You Do Everything Perfect Huh?

Do you Know How Much Effort it Takes To make one of These Movies and Post it. He's Doing a Great Job. He's Helping To Make the New/Apprentice Technicians More informed and Do it Yourselfers/Customers Understand What is involved in Air Conditioning Repair.

  • In your video, I noticed that you did not lock out and tag the breakers inside and disconnect for the condensing unit/heat pump. This is a huge safety issue that many companys fail to train and supply there employees the means to lock out and tag.

  • Great informative stuff but as far as liability purposes go, I would never give information on how to do it yourself to a customer. I've delt with homeowners that are very handy and could probably repair there own stuff but its just too risky in this day and age. Let a trained professional do it.

  • Payne is the contractor's grade system that Carrier makes. It should run fairly efficient as long as you make sure the coils and air filter are clean and the refrigerant charge is correct.

  • Another great video Dr Z!

  • The XL19i uses reciprocating compressors for some dumb reason. I check one out today.

  • I heard that snowball died after 20 years of running.

  • I think that this might be a video that paysonbadboy or hackfreehvac would have an easier time doing. hackfreehvac has done many videos showing the Trane XL19i. I work on mainly commercial equipment. It wouldn't be very realistic for me to promise a video showing the Trane XL19i and XL16i.

  • It just seems weird to me that Carrier would use a recip when a scroll would be more energy efficient.

  • I meant to say Trane.

  • Grading air conditioners is much like grading automobiles. They all have their good points and bad points. But for the most part, brands like Goodman, Janitrol and Amana are your cheaper construction grade systems. American Standard, Trane, Lennox and Carrier make the higher end systems. It's all about what's under the hood. You really have to ask: what kind of compressors, coils and controls do they use?

  • I looked at the picture. I think the picture is not accurate. First, there's supposed to be two compressors. The picture shows only one. Plus, it would be difficult to tell what kind of compressor would be under the insulating blanket.

  • The XL19i uses two climatuff scroll compressors. That provides you with two stages of cooling and three stages of heating. By the way, no one that I asked knew anything about the XL19i being replaced anytime soon. It's still a corporate secret if it is. I'll send you a message with a web page where you can compare all the the high efficient air conditioning systems by Carrier and Trane.

  • The XL14i uses the Trane Climatuff scroll compressor. If you're replacing the compressor in your condensing unit, you might want to spend the money and buy an OEM replacement. Trane tends to engineer their stuff real different.

  • garbage can or drum and cilinder kind condenser units i still see some in my area today but not up close like i do with my to

    maintane it and

sense it some one elses yard to.

  • ok thar also one more round unit i saw when

i was a kid. it was in canada and yes the summers in some parts of canada close to the u.s. border will be hot for an air conditioner to be running i not sure of the brand name i thinks it arcoaire but i not ruleing out addison for it's brand name to it

is not amana sense the color of the lable was white not black all i can remember is the name starting with an a and the lable being

    white.

  • Exactly.

  • A colab is easy. I could write up a script. You can do your part in Phoenix and I can do my part in Gainesville, Florida. You can email me your part and I'll edit it like what I did to this video.

  • OMG that was awesome. Where did you find the "Trash Can" condenser in the beginning? Still running isn't it? Who did you get to dress up in the last segment? Is that one of your employees?

  • The trash can is an Addison 4 ton heat pump. Believe it or not it was running when I did the video. I just used it as a prop. The guy at the end is edbassmaster. He's another youtuber that helped me do this video. Maybe we could do a colab video together sometime.

  • those round condensers are rearly

seen now in days sense it a part of a older

style. last time i got up close to a round unit is at a holiday staybridge inn hotel in

alanta. the brand name is carrier and it use

a two blade fan. the hotels are pretty munch like apartments used for over three day stays

so every sute has it own system.

  • I'll check on that on Monday. Thanks

  • Thanks. Buying an air conditioner is a lot like buying a car. I would need to know the tonnage and voltage of your current air conditioner before I could begin to sell you something. If you have a residential three ton heat pump. You could spend as little as four thousand or even more than ten thousand. I all depends on the name brand and model.

  • Owe yeah its very important to measure voltage to ground. voltmeter across a contactor for instances would read 0 volts when the contactor is closed but if its open line voltage would be measured. Its all about the potential difference. Wow I am an HVAC NERD KOOL!!!

  • Ain't it great to be a HVAC nerd?

  • Hell Yeah!!!

  • very well done. This will be my first year working in the HVAC industry, and im looking forward to it.

  • It's a great career. Just stick with it. Only good things can happen.

  • LMAO true true

  • Very informative...thanks for helpin!!

  • Tequila was perfect for this job. Thanks again.

  • That was great! Gotta love Tequila.

  • Everyone did a great job with their part. Tequila was the perfect character for the job.

  • Here's a real question. I only use the air conditioning occasionally. When it gets over 100 and if I'm home. Otherwise on hot days I close everything up and use fans. That said, Summer is approaching and I do want it to work when I turn it on. I've lived here 7 years and have never done anything to it. Is there any regular maintenance that is supposed to be done? or is it like a refrigerator and works until it breaks?

  • Most refrigerators have condensing coils underneath or on the backside. It's a good idea to keep it clean of dust. You wouldn't believe how they look after many years of neglect. The best way to clean the coil is with an air hose. It will make a frigin' mess, but it's worth it.

There is a regular maintenance that should be performed on your a/c. To start: clean your coils every one to two years & change the air filter once a month. I'll have to make a video about it.

  • Turning the power off first is for wimps! ;-)

  • I've tried.

  • What do you mean that my leatherman not good enough. Good video.

  • Actually, you might be able to use the leatherman if you could use it to remove all the screws in tight places.
