I only discovered the Indigo Girls about 6 months ago. Never knew much about themor their music. They have written and performed sime great songs but this one is a masterpiece. The lyrics in this song are beutiful beyond measure and the harmonies are superb. I love it.
This is my favorite of all Indigo songs. I have been listening to them for 15 yrs. They sing on all things love and pain. I am straight myself but can relate to all matters of the heart that they touch on!
I don't think this song is sad at all. It's honest, but there is hope here. It's just hits so close to home that most of us are sad that we've been in this exact place. But "I feel safe within the arms of love's discovery " makes me smile every time.
Most songs either have great lyrics and no so great music. Or great music and no so great lyrics. And I have yet to find a song that has both...until I heard this song.
This is by far more meaningful than any other song I can think of. Thank you Amy and Emily, for inspiring me yet again. :)
This is hands down my favorite Indigo girls song. It makes me cry every single time....The slim chance of loves recovery...Truer words have never been spoken
I sent a letter to the Indigo Girls in the Spring of 1990 requesting permission to use a quote from this song on my senior page in my school's yearbook. They granted my request. I am amazed that, at 38 years old, that same quote still holds the same importance to me as it did then.
The fact that I still swell to this song even though it was played at the wedding of the woman I'm divorcing after 16 years is testament to its power.
Can you describe a song that illicts more emotion than this one? And we sit here in our storm and drink a toast to the slim chance of oves recovery. Truer words have ever been spoken
This song makes me cry every time I hear it.Amy Ray and Emily have touched my soul like no one else. Thier music, words, and spirit remind me of my mother (R.I.P) "And we sit here in out storm and drink a toast to the slim chance of loves recovery"
I hear music by celine dion and I think of fantasies, I picture things I've never seen, and is beautiful. I hear the indigo girls and I hear music written by people like me who are singing reality not fantasy.
Its funny how many lives can be reflected in a song. The Indigo Girls are true artists having touched the face of the universal and personal in each of us. I think it comes from a faith in love and goodness even in the face of such a twisted world. They know that the truth lies beneath this sometimes tattered skin we call reality, that love does go on and is there for the asking. All we need is faith in love, God. That is why we celebrate the truth when we hear it. We were made for it.
Lyrically AND musically breathtaking, esp if you've ever felt that particular brand of pain. Thanks, yall...for writing and performing....I hope u know how inspiring you are, life can be hard, yall always can pull me thru. Sincere thanks, shalom 2 u
I adore the Indigo Girls, this is one of my favourites, i just wish they would record it again, some of the vocals are just on the limit of their lower register, almost sounds like its at the wrong speed at parts (there i know it's heresy, but i was dying to get it out). Love the girls
There I am in younger days, star gazing Painting picture perfect maps Of how my life and love would be Not counting the unmarked paths of misdirection My compass, faith in loves perfection I missed ten million miles of road I should have seen Meanwhile our friends we thought were so together Left each other one by one on the road to fairer weather And we sit here in our storm and drink a toast To the slim chance of loves recovery it touch me!
one of my all time faves aswell, i find they have a raw and powerful way of saying what i wish i could have the courage to say.... love the indigo girls! TY
My favourite group playing my 2nd favourite song. True love needs work and dedication to succeed for the long haul, sung by two of the most beautiful voices (and one of the best harmony teams) I've ever come across. Keep up the good work, Emily and Amy!
this is definately one of my favorite songs too. i was disappointed when they didn't sing it at their concert that i attended but it was still a great concert.

Oh how I wish I were a trinity, so if I lost a part of me, I'd still have two of the the same to live.
But nobody gets a lifetime rehersal...To let this love survive would be the greatest gift that we could give.
Ahhhh, how wonderful
