Why did Amy give the servants a day off ? A woman of her standings wouldn't stay alone in a household with only one servant unless she was expecting something to happen. Many people have been linking her death to Elizabeth/Dudley but what about Amy ? Could it be possible that she was involved into something she shouldn't have, maybe she knew something and was murdered for it ? Something that had nothing to do with Elizabeth or Robert ? We'll never know of course but all is possible.
@maths36 Given Elizabeth's prudent fear from her childhood experience of her father's double uxoricides (executions of his successive queens Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard) and now Robert Dudley's likely uxoricide, having had his first wife Amy Robsart killed, she now "with wisest sorrow thinks on him . . . with remembrance of [her[self" and declines to marry the uxoricide Dudley, preferring her own safety.
@JudgeJulieLit I don't think Dudley killed his wife. There was an interrogation and he was found innocent. Elizabeth was a good judge of character and if she had suspected Dudley to be uxoricide I'm sure he would have fallen from her favor long ago but instead she kept him around. Personally, I believe he wasn't behind Amy's death he knew it would damage his reputation he once loved her. She was sick and it was probably an unfortunate accident, suicide or Cecil was behind it no one knows ?
Has anyone read Philippa gregory's "The Virgin's Lover"? For Elizabeth+Robert lovers and who r interested in the mystery of Amy Robsart should read it. if u have read "The Other Boleyn Girl" you'll love this book too!
1)Dudley would have become King in all but name - Elizabeth would have been expected to retire from and court and be a Good Wife - i.e. look after the household, servants, children, etc. She wanted to be Queen and master of her own destiny, not subservient to a man.
2) Politically, it would have a disastrous. He was vain, ambitous, arrogant and possesed no political sense at all. Elizabeth couldn't allow that disaster to befall the country.
I love them ssssssssooo much its like the obsession of my life-my adoration and enthusiasm for the bond between Robert and Elizabeth. They were together since they were 8 and 9 and he had been there for her all their life until he died at the age of 56. (Elizabeth was 55 back then.)
If you're interested, Id recommend the book (not a fiction historic novel but a REAL book) "Elizabeth and Leicester" by Sarah Gristwood. :)
The Queen of the Scots couldn't have chosen a worse husband than she did. She might have outlived Elizabeth is she had married Dudley. He couldn't have possibly been worse than her other relationships.
Thanks so much for your ENTIRE play list on Elizabeth. I set it to play automatically, and it is like watching a movie. You have chosen excellent clips to tell Elizabeth's story, and it is fascinating. I am enjoying this very very much! Thank you very much.
no she didnt have scars on her face, even though robert dudleys sister who cared for her was scarred for life! elizabeth was lucky enough to have been treated by the most enlightened doctor of the time
5. She wanted to rule herself and if she married she knew that whoever she married would be in charge of politics.
And you may say Elizabeth didn't want anything to do with a wife-murderer but that is untrue. She loved Robert, but she had to make a great scarfice for her country. The proof that she loved him is this. Before she died she said his name and died with the last letter Robert gave her (which declared his love for her)by her beside.
Yes that is a theory. There is a theory that Elizabeth and Cecil set him up, but the truth is that is very unlikely because she was very sick and suicidal at the time, she had joint problems I think and could have fallen down the stairs or commited suicide. Though Elizabeth and Cecil both predicted her death before it happened so it makes you wonder.
Elizabeth made a great personal sacrifice by not marrying Dudley; but, she was ruled by her head, and she was a queen before she was a lover. She would not have surivied politically if she had not done so.
@interpolislurve exactly. I admire her for it. I was being brainwashed by a certain someone who shall remain nameless before about my own persona and my history. NEVER AGAIN! RULE BRITTANIA! VIVAT ELIZABETH REGINA!
I believe she and Robert's reincarnations will find each other and finally be able to love... and I think that might be my best friend and I... I know, lame! But I've been drawn to Elizabeth I since I was a little girl for no reason that I know of... and when I first met my bestfriend, when I looked into his eyes I knew him some how... weird, but oh well, lol... I guess I identify too much with Elizabeth and Robert.
Well I don't believe you. I am drawn too Elizabeth more than you know, I want to know loads about her and I don't know why but I don't believe I am her recarnation. I'm glad you love your bestfriend and I hope your happy together but I doubt very much that you and him are recarnations of Robert and Elizabeth. I think you just got a bit carried away there. Saying that you still don't deserve the thumbs down.
@chocobasse Robert would have mess things up. His not as smart ask Elizabeth and likely would have looked the other way if he would have taken control. England would not have had such a stable age....Long live Elizabeth the first :)
I say his wife killed herself. She was dying of cancer and was in pain. It makes sense to me

Funny how she still looks healthy and attractive despite having had small pox lol. Elizabeth I apparently had scars all over her face after.
hipsta89 3 years ago
no i dont think the small pox thing is historicly correct i mean maybe she did have some scars from the illness but not badly scarred.
bananabubblegum 3 years ago
no she didnt have scars on her face, even though robert dudleys sister who cared for her was scarred for life! elizabeth was lucky enough to have been treated by the most enlightened doctor of the time

But in one book i read elizabeth knew someone who could get rid of the scars in time so she dint have the mangled face of smallpox.
Despenny4ever 3 years ago 2
why didnt they marry? the house of dudley seems nicer than house of stuart.
saintsistaz 3 years ago
Because Dudleys wife was coincidentally killed and Elizabeth didn't want anything to do with a wife killer...like her father
angelinataylor86 3 years ago
Well there was a lot more to do with it than that if you don't mind me saying. Elizabeth couldn't marry him for many reasons.
1. The country hated Robert and would never accept him as king.
2. If she married him, the court men who had hope of marrying her wouldn't be as loyal.
3. Because he was suspected of murdering his wife, Elizabeth could not marry him for their children would be Illegitimate.
4. To keep the foreign countries allies, if she married Robert she would lose them.
HistoryGirl2 3 years ago 3
