a woman with a voice that just goes up and down the scale of it all, every style she can do it! but she also does it all with originality and grace ;)
I knew PJ before, but the "stronger" older songs. I liked them but i wasnt such a big fan. These softer, darker songs of her though, I love them. I didn't have to digest them, i loved them immediately. Its awesome how she transforms and never repeats herself
the horrifying scream in the end is such a beautiful way to express the lyrics and the whole of this dreadful song. To me, that long scream says EVERYTHING.
As a kid, Kate Bush hit me in places I did not even knew I had. Now, 20 years later, Miss Harvey did, with songs like these. Makes me feel like I'm still alive
Like many others, I agree with jherms74 and don't really have much to add except to say that I was not open to 'White Chalk' in 2007 but 2 1/2 years later something has changed and I am now receptive. A truly extraordinary, chilling performance.
Oh Jherms74, I have to agree with you, all pj's music grows on you, you may at first be so disapointed...then it finds it's way into your soul, and your smitten forever, bless you Polly, your magicalx
To me her music is the ultimate acquired taste. I usually don't like her albums at first but I've learned that with patience I will fall in love with them. That was especially true with White Chalk. I was angry the first time I listened to it. What happened to the force of nature I had been listening to for 15 years?! Now after letting it digest it may be my favorite album of hers.
Yes, often the music that you grow to really love was difficult at first. One of the great things about PJ Harvey is that she keeps moving so we haven't been given ten reprises of "Dry"
@jherms74 2 years after you posted this but I couldn't agree more. For much the same reasons as you described, I never got into White Chalk when it was released, despite multiple listenings, and it was only recently, during a live webcast of her performance from the Albert Hall, that I realised how amazing these songs were. Her performance of "The Devil" and "Silence" quite literally brought tears to my eyes. She is simply amazing.
This is the first video I've ever heard by PJ Harvey. Mightily impressed with the tools used, things like a slight sharp or flat vocal towards the end, Simple piano melody and chords, aka 3rds 4ths and 5ths to reinforce the meaning of the lyric. These are not commonly used these days at all. The last of the good wave singer songwriters was in the 70's. Good stuff.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I was impressed until the end. The shrill howls had a haunting feel but she kept going flat and it was NOT pleasing to the ear. Great presence and song though.
Wonderful. Not only your own beauty, PJ. Never in my life have I heard such an emotional piece of music, even compared to the work of Billy Corgan or dredg. It's... Wow. However, the uneducated white trash will still listen to crap like Evanescence and take it for melancholic, it's a shame, but some still have PJ's work, and I never want to miss that album.
This is so so beautiful. Hauntingly beautiful. It's my favourite song on the album by far and the rest of them are awesome too. Live, it is without equal. Genius.
Thanks so much for uploading this video! This is one of my best song from PJ Harvey! This live version feels so much like the studio version which shows again the great talent of PJ.
There is so much more variety in women artists than men. Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, PJ, Bjork, etc. They call and have something to say, unlike the pop singers.
that's ridiculous and sexist. try leonard cohen, bob dylan, nick cave, neil young, robert plant, antony, daniel johnston, etc... i think we are on equal playing ground here. PJ harvey rawks.
That is a rather sexist comment, are you saying all pop singers are men? There are as many talented men or women in music, in fact i don't even care about their gender as long as I like their music.
It's irrelevant, really. It's all about individuality..and PJ is a beautiful individual with a beautiful voice. Why are we even discussing anything else here? :)
dresden dolls, rasputina, nellie mckay, regina spektor, b-52s, sarah slean, loreena mckennit, miranda sex garden, etc. going back to the 80s kate bush, laurie anderson, sinead, ricki lee jones, jane silberry, etc.
Hey there PJ Harvey, I left a lengthier response to your new CD, "White Chalk", on my account. What I wrote on my account is the best way I can describe the illumination that I receive when I listen to your music.
Thank you very much for this one! I love the album very much, but the live performances of the new songs are even better!!! :-) I wish, they would have put some of those as bonus-tracks on the new album...
Great thanks for uploading. This song is brilliant. It's so dreamy... I don't find the album spooky. Rather eerie though very warm and homelike. It somehow reminds me my childhood, still a haven't rised in Yeovil ^^
I remember listening in a video that she told that when she listened to her music she imagend a little movie, that probes that PJ is such a creative true artist, I love you!
