Cool guitar. I remember when the original Charvel version came out and being really knocked out by it. This was back in the pointy headstock superstrat era so it was really a radical thing. Very forward looking actually. If I had one of these I'd probably replace the humbucker with a nickel 57 Classic in a white ring.
I own both Charvel & jackson surfys & GRB done a gr8 job but: the headstock logo is awful & so out of place; the g.r.b looks like it was knocked up in Word!
Kokopelli *could* work on its own as the sole inlay but the mother of pearl is frankly gaudy
SC/H combo IS true to originals but the bucker having no cover it loses visual continuity to the lipstick
So GRB, fix headstock & +new finishes such as black, blonde/maple neck, red, I'll snap one up but as it stands theyre a bit too country & west'n
It's really a unique design, and I'm happy that somone is carrying the torch for the old Surfcasters.
I too feel that aesthetically, the humbucker is horridly out of place. Imagine an old fender wide range pickup in it's place; it would be a thing of beauty.
I'm also not too keen on the color of the finish. I would have prefered a nice deep cherry stain.
All in all though, it looks like a beautiful guitar with a lot of vibe.
I always loved the Surfcaster. BUT, if GRB had stayed closer to the design asthetics, they should have put a double lipstick (humbucker) w/tap instead of this highway information sign style humbucker. Totally out of place IMO. Otherwise, nice geetar....
it is a Charvel Surfcaster copy in fact. Jackson made them too for a while in mid '90s. The body shape was modelled after the Fender Jazzmaster which was a popular "surf guitar" hence the name Surfcaster.
Donate that to me! I wish i had a guitar like that. Really like the tone of it, since it almost sounds like a strat (my fav) and change it to hum bucking for all my harder songs!
Its a copy of the charvel/jackson discontinued surfcaster. Although the surfcaster didnt have the humbucker and the ones I have seen have either 2 or 3 lipstick pups.... Seen them knocking about for ages, always wondered how they'd sound
i thought it was a Rickon Bocker when i saw the color, but a semi hollow, with a soup bar pickup, a bigsby type tremolo and a coil tap humbucker is defintly thinking out side the box... i think i like it..
hi justin cool guitar.....thanks for all the lessons uve really helped me...any chance of u doing romeo and juliet by the killers(dire straights cover)
Nice guitar...nice to see Justin do a guitar review. Just think with all the guitars he has in his personal collection (30) he could do them for a while...like he needs something else to do...hahaha...

I just assumed it was called Kokocaster because it looked like a chocolate burst.
At 6:10 it sounded a lot like The Hives. Not just what you were playing, I mean the tone.
It sounds really good.
WeezerFan4Ever 3 years ago
I think that riff sounds like something The Hives definetly might play.
