This species of hermit crab needs 80F and 80% stable humidity in order to survive. Marine grade salt water is a must. They also need sand or a mix of sand and eco earth fiber that is large enough for them to fully burrow into in order to molt. Fresh fruits, meats, and veggies are also greatly needed. A larger tank is also needed. Visit the hermit crab association web page to find out more.

get a yen gallon tank with about four inches of clean, moist play sand and two or three friends minimum. lose the gravel and the painted shell. Offer him carrots from time to time with his normal food and he'll be much happier. As it is now he is very distressed. The cute chirping you hear is pretty much him crying out in anguish or fear or both.
Poor thing you really need to give it a bigger tank and at least one other hermit crab to play with, as well as a deep substrate it can dig in and lots of spare shells slightly bigger than the one it currently has. It also needs a salt water bowl and a tank lid. Its probably chirping because its stressed! Please help it because it is really distressing for it the way you currently are keeping it!

Straws are extremely delicate and have many needs, none of which you are meeting. Also, (s)he looks to be in a painted shell. That's bad.
- Get at least a ten gallon tank. With a screen top preferably.
- Get an under-tank heater.
- Get him/her some friends. (s)He's probably chirping to cry out for companionship.
- Get suitable substrate for this new tank, like coconut fiber, play sand, or Eco Earth, as it's called.
- Get more shells.
If you can't, there are ways to adopt your crab out.

Hes making that noise because of stress. You need to get him a proper tank or he will die.

I had a larger hermit crab attack my smaller crab and the smaller one was making noises like that. I think it is a self defense mechanism.
