Of course if your movie is "crappy" film festivals are pointless. IE if it's a formulaic made for TV piece of ish, there isn't much point in sending it to a festival.
However,
if your movie is amazingly good then even if you go to a studio/distributor to sell it and forgo the festivals chances are the studio that buys it will want to enter it into the festivals anyway to generate hype.
It's all about the quality. Is it a MOW or a Pulp Fiction?
how do i get agents and big names to see the thing? i don't want to profit, i just want notables to view it.

It's all relative.
