  • Yo you can sing

  • This woman's vocal range is amazing. Sometimes she sings amazingly high notes where you can clearly hear that she hasn't practiced them much, When I hear them I fear for just a moment, but then she pulls it all off anyhow! that's when I realize that she has considerable guts and talent.

Not to mention her bass skills....

  • What talent !!!

  • Excelente....¡¡¡¡

tiene angel....una voz maravillosa y sus inflexiones ..estremecen

  • When will people stop bible-bashing when they hear great music?

  • I love my country... I am aboriginal... I love my country...Inequity hurts me... I am a teacher of the poor... we are without resources or recourse.

  • Greetings to all for a smooth jazzy weekend!

  • is she fuckin blind open ur eyezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz jeeeeeeeeeeeeez good voice voice though creeeeeeeeeeepy song tooo needy

  • @gosucalime You DO realize that this is a song about faith, right? The "him" referred to here is Jesus, not some flesh and blood guy. Seriously, get a grip.

  • I love her hair :D

  • SHE IS SOOOOOO Lovely!!!! Wow, what a beautiful beautiful soul. Thanks God, for bringing her here! Such stimulating harmonies/changes.

  • im a very large bearded man and im not afraid to say i cried a little while listening to this..... its just so beautiful

  • @mpriolo13 Duuuuuude!!!! I'm glad you said it for us both!!!

  • AMAZING!!!

  • Bless YOU Esperanza ..*s*

  • So beautiful. Incredible talent!!

  • So beautiful.

  • Seriously how could anyone 'dislike' this video? I wish I had half the amount of her talent. What a beautiful gift!

  • I completely agree with you.... thanks!!!! Today I do not feel alone at the quarter tone world :-)

  • to make love to her...you can bet that'd be a night simply encapsulated with pure passion and ecstasy. you can see it in her eyes and her smile. she immerses herself in love.

  • Brings me to tears. I hear a lot of Joni Mitchell (like it or not), but great sound, excellent playing. Watched a few of her now, have to say I like the no-accompaniment versions even better. This is brilliant.

  • Amazing.

  • What a display of opposite human natures.Beautiful and grotesque in the same room at the same time. Esperanza is everything those entitled, lying, mocking, thieving scum could never be. I welled up inside watching her true expression and talent being dangled before the envious and the soulless. Simply bizarre. Those are the people that are killing the dollar, sucking the freedom out of our society, allowing the drugs into the country through the CIA and implementing the NWO. Love vs hate. WTC7

  • OMG! Love this version!

  • She is truly a fantastic artist. Her songs have such great meaning and she sings/plays them with beauty and grace. A true woman of God.

  • @FiddleeDeeKP

In this case, this is a Lauryn Hill cover. That's where the meaning comes from. ;)

  • 2:09 was the word of God. I don't even know what to do with myself now. It's time for bed, I'm totally wiped after that.

  • @shanatelevision No, it was the word of Esperanza Spalding, not God. Get over yourself.

  • @clearfather wtf is wrong wtih you? i am not religious at all. i was reffering to moments in music that can seem magical or supernatural. clearly that went over your head, and the only person who needs to get over themselves is you. stop trying to be a youtube terrorist and find a hobby. i hear great things about knitting.

  • @shanatelevision lol... knitting.. nice one. :D

  • wooooooowwwwwww

  • Majorly awesome!

  • Pure beauty and talent.

  • beautiful...

  • Effortless and sincere, just fantastic!

  • I want to die for love just for this great interpretation... How can she makes magic with just a double-bass and her voice? She definitively is my hero!

  • Simply perfect for a lack of better words

  • 1 Corinthians 13: 1 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5... it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil ...7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

  • @13reezy13r That is what true love is. The Apostle Paul aptly tells us what it is all about. Thanks for your post.

  • She is not playing flat. It's called Clashing and Dissonance. Which is what Jazz had a lot of when it first started and it still has it today. :)

  • This is so incredibly wonderful, it makes live worth living!

  • marry me

  • wow simply beautiful im sorry ur wikipedia page was attacked by obsessive beliebers

  • this performance is soooo beautiful!her voice touches me sooo deep in my soul!!!!

  • Pure beauty, brings me to tears each time

  • fuck bieber, this is real music.

  • Lets not knock Bieber there is music for everyone he just happens to appeal to children whose palate has not matured yet, they don't have any idea what music is not one clue. But they too will grow up and hopefully acquire better taste. Even Bieber has to grow up someday. When we were children we loved the products of Disney also, but when we grew up "we put away childish things" There is yet hope for them! Yes has certainly EARNED HER GRAMMY!!! She worked for it this is what is known as TALENT.

  • Well said!! @cyevents

  • Esperanza Spalding earned her Grammy sure she did. What a beatiful performance. For me Spalding is a musical hero too.

  • i wish people would stop talking about bieber...

  • @ckaminski2 If only, I don't get why he comes up atleast once on every one of her video's. I love this girl, such an expressive musician.

  • Esperanza's beautiful music is the only thing I agree with Obama on..... ;)

  • I am amazed with all this arguing about flatness & Spalding versus Hill. No one listened to Chet Baker???OUT OF TUNE, beautiful like so many others… tuning is a subjective thing, specially when tempered western system clashes with string instruments. String Quartets play all the time "out of tune". Does Espe play "out of tune"?: technically yes, but musically ????? By the way, it's easy to be in tune when you sing with a goat vibrato like Ms. Hill (I personally found it really cheap taste).

  • @ruizcomposer Gigi Gryce, Jackie Mac, Ornette Coleman, Trane.....what do they all have in common? An uncanny ability to play the most beautiful shit while stretching your Western ears to the point of bloodiness with their interpretation of intonation. Seriously, some of the most harmonically touching moments in jazz, and arguably the best, occur at the quarter-tone level. All this whinging about the fact that her performance is out of tune only shows the ignorance of the commentors.

  • This is so beautiful. It made me cry. I see why she won that Grammy. Congratulations Ms. Spalding. You definitely earned it.

  • ....wow!

  • Her voice is beautiful but the instrument just sounded off to me.

  • @eviltwinize its called jazz...

  • @heinsteven Yeah I guess that means I don't "get" jazz.

  • good music AND a fro? cant get any better

  • This is very unusual. I have not seen a double accompanies singing. I enjoy her performance a lot, thanks.

  • BEAUTIFUL <3

  • With the sound of her voice and the sound of that bass, it'll be difficult to not make every song sound sexy.

  • wow this is great music... Beiber deserved to lose.

  • @ddanielsoprano she's not out of tune at all...if you analyze how the notes in the solo go in relation to the bass, they just fit very interesting chords, lots of secondary functions and modal mixture, quite honestly it's brilliant, she managed to do all that and create such a jazzy and coherent sound.

  • @Buddhagon I totally agree with you that what she did with the song is very cool, I didn't want to start a war w my comment...right at the beginning tho, before she starts getting very jazzy w it, she's just mimicking the guitar line in the original Lauryn Hill version, and when she starts singing it sounds off to me...Just sayin', E's got ways to go still, tho very talented...Lauryn Hill was always a FANTASTIC vocalist imo

  • for 4:04 minutes, i actually forgot the whole point of the dislike button

  • Una genia puro talento ..

  • This is a song on Lauryn Hill's album "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" that is a great song sung by Lauryn. Esperanza took this song and made it her own and is incredible. Very intimate. Love it.

  • I just love how she's so into her song in her performance, you can just see how she just LOVES what she does. I really adore her for that <3

  • This is not out of tune. What this is amazing. Its a perfect and beautiful work of art!

  • lauryn hill right?! ahh esperanza is great!

  • yea i agree....bass is out of tune...

  • disagree, it's a double bass it's not going to be perfect but dang i thought it was close and she had that great bass sound i want to have one day

  • I'm sorry, she is a great musician, but this is horribly out of tune

  • @ddanielsoprano The Double Bass is a fretless string instrument, shes playing and singing at the same time. I'd like to see you or Justin Bieber do that.

  • @tjazzington dude, I'm not a Bieber fan, I played the violin for 13 years, also a fretless instrument, majored in voice and sing opera now...listen to the original Lauryn Hill song (which is awesome!) and you'll see...the bass is out of tune and on top of it she's singing super flat...she's a great instrumentalist and an ok singer imo but in this instance, I'm not loving it

  • @ddanielsoprano Fair enough, I still think it's a good performance despite the minor flaws. I understand why you don't completely like it though and I respect your opinion. As for the Bieber comment I was simply joking, I apologize if any offense was taken.

  • @tjazzington hey, no problem! you understand, no one wants to be falsely accused of Bieber fever, it's too much of an embarrassment : )

  • @ddaniels Wow,..Impressive!..she's so out of tune and 'super flat' (whatever that is)that she's performing at the White House...teaches at Berkley, has been incessantly hounded for interviews....and is one of the more remarkable PRODIGIES out there..and if you have a problem with her "out of tune" bass playing...she's in great company, paul chambers. sam jones, paul garrison, tommy potter,(i take it u know NONE of the aforementioned) etc..Me thinks the green eye monster covets a bit STOP HATING!

  • @keybobrob yeah she's out of tune, at the white house, it's not a crazy notion, could happen to anyone who plays a fretless string instrument and sings...'super flat whatever that is?' it means it is flat, you don't know what flat means? It means below the intended pitch. I know all of the aforementioned and I'm not jealous, I'm happy or Esperanza, a talented young female musician, I just don't love this video...personally, I think the original Lauryn Hill version is a lot better

  • @daniel yes yes..i get it..its a free country & u could & ANYONE can express virtually ANYTHING they want on Utube @ANYTIME..blah.blah..etc. I get u.BUT if u REALLY know those WORLD class jazz musicians that I mentioned (as u claim u do) then u would know that they &others on many occassions have performed, "out of tune". In this GENRE, it is NOT RARE or ODD for a bassists intonation 2be "off"(some more than others) In FACT, its SO common that I question why u bring it up in the first place????

  • @ddanielsop perhaps its ur operatic background OR perhaps ur afflicted or gifted w/ perfect pitch(not a average trait amongst the population) that makes u feel that ur critique is warranted. But the FACT is most musicians who KNOW and play in this GENRE would read ur comment and say..."okie dokie,..alrighty then..moving right along". In context, its not important. Singing or NOT singing the upright bass as i said already is commonly played by many with intonation problems particularily in jazz..

  • @keybobrob you're right to say I might be extra picky because of classical training and all that, but I dunno, I saw Dave Holland playing at Blue Note last year and holy mother of God, that guy's technique was as perfect as any classical musician I've heard...of course, that's a really seasoned performer...anyways, it wasn't so much the bass being out of tune that bothered me but the singing...I wasn't that impressed that's all, and I'm a BIG Lauryn Hill fan, so it's hard not to compare

  • @ddanielsoprano I appreciate ur point and Mr. Holland is an amazing player but I think you need to get out more and see many of the other greats to form a more contextual critique, cuz he's NO MORE astounding than L.Grenadier, S.Lafaro, C. Mingus and countless others!! Imo ur remarks were HYPER-CRITICAL and out of context..Esperanza is petit and her hand gape is nowhere close to Hollands &the others. and she also is no where close to Lauren no more than Lauren can match her musical virtuosity.

  • @ddanJust wanted u 2notice that I didnt argue whether or not she was in key (playing or singing wise)..my point centered around the "out of context" and "hyper-critical" descriptions u used. I have excellent ears..and not cuz I'm special but because like u I have experience...and I use it 2draw upon when assessing things. (30+ years of playing/ accompanying vocalists-from novices to grammy award winners). So not only do i know what " # or b " is but I've learned 2be LESS LINEAR in my listening.

  • @keybobrob ugh, lets just stop arguing, why do you have to be so offended and upset by my remarks? I wrote my comment because I wanted to see if anyone else agreed with me on here, not to be a troll. Some people agree with me, most people don't, and that's fine, music is subjective. I maintain that in this video as well as others I've seen, I wasn't so impressed with the singing, though I think Esperanza's musicianship is astounding.

  • @ddanielsoprano Lol, ok sis..it's all good. Sorry that ur perception of my 'written' words reflected that I was offended and upset..because I truly was not. Unfortunately, healthy cyber-debating such as this one can sometimes lead to misinterpretation. If we spoke in person I can assure u that u would not think that I was offended or upset. I just felt a need to respond to the choice or words that you used in ur description, "HORRIBLY out of tune and SUPER flat"..She was at times indeed flat

  • @ddanielsoprano, so in the main respect we were ALWAYS on the same page in that regard. hahaha....I never ever said that she was NOT flat...i just chose to put the "flatness" in context, hence the comments. So please don't take my criticism of ur criticism to heart...I know you were not being a troll...just a little harsh imo. BELIEVE ME, I HAVE BEEN WITH VOCALIST WHO ARE SUPER FLAT AND HORRIBLY OUT OF TUNE..and she, in no way compared to those horror stories..Peace n Love Daniel

  • and thanks for the lesson on what "flat" means..I appreciate it. But I pay close attention to ur words of choice. And u CLEARLY wrote "SUPER FLAT"...which CLEARLY IMPLIES she was WAY off pitch-other wise quite frankly why would u OR anyone 4that matter use such a descriptive if it were not 2express the extreme degree of tonal inaccuracy. So again, either u have perfect pitch and it pains u2 hear her very poor vocal intonations or ur doin a lil hatin..in this case ;-) and yes LAUREN IS MY GURL!!

  • I love her voice, she's absolutely amazing!

  • soo amazing. Makes me jealous how much musical knowledge she has noone out can compete with her shes got a new sound that many artist will try to duplicate but you also have to have the talent to pull it off she is the most talented musician/proffesor i have ever heard

  • I can listen to this over and over. I'll never get tired of it.

  • Amazing, absolutely beautiful

  • Amazing

  • beautiful. in every sense of the word.

  • Job well done, the original is better.

  • It is beyond me how anyone can dislike this video. I guess some poor souls out there can't appreciate good music :( What a shame.

  • The bassline reminds me of a lauryn hill track from her acoustic concert... anybody hear that too?

  • @sisigwithrice the reason it sounds similar is because Esperanza is singing "Tell Him" by Lauryn Hill :)

  • Simply beautiful!!! Music is Love!

  • This woman is AMAZING!!!

  • My favorite!

  • Keep doing what you do Esperanza never mind the nay sayers you are talented being on words

  • What a display of opposite human natures. Beautiful and grotesque in the same room at the same time. Esperanza is everything those entitled, lying, mocking, thieving scum could never be. I welled up inside watching her true expression and talent being dangled before the envious and the soulless. Simply bizarre. • Music like this is the only thing that can save us in America and the World, because we said no to everything else, what do you expect form us brainwashed TV robots!!!

  • how can anyone not like hearing a pretty girl telling the world she loves her man?

  • @TrashcanBoogie she actually is singing about Christ. it really is beautiful. :)

  • that was beautiful....absolutely beautiful...i love her soooo much she inspires me in so many ways....omg im like speechless right now lol shes just stunning in every way

  • i love her hair!

  • 40 losers tried to play like her and failed!

  • Almost every jazz band in Mumbai, India play her songs now

  • She could've jammed with pdt Clinton!

  • AWSOME !!

  • simply amazing

  • 39 people have no soul, no heart, no love for music, and no room to speak.

  • @ShawnsNotGay Gay.

  • @ShawnsNotGay I totally agree those 39 people are complete looser when it comes to knowing anything about real soulful and raw feeling that are coming from her music. Real talent at it's best and know gimmicks needed, pure natural sound how wonderful to hear.

  • Wow... she touched the soul!

  • Wow.... i mean, wow.. music is being reclaimed by the musicians from the media men and big music labels who go for the lowest common denominator. This is the first time i ever wished i was president!

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa que ricooooooooooooo

  • Her and her voice are beauty in its bravest and most natural form

  • @eddieyervinyan Having my own form of english is being original, unlike you dull and boring. I can communicate in more ways than you will ever know. I will alter what i want and still get my message across.

Your comment lacks any logic, A troll is what you will see in your mirror.

You will never c my videos as they are too good.

  • @eddieyervinyan Unhuman

i have my own form of english

The rest of your comment has no interest in a response from me, its just to boring, i can geuss just like you.

  • if I ever was to sing in public id hope my voice would be as strong as hers... its like A BOLD WORD

  • Her Voice is Bold...

  • damn how did 39 ppl click the wrong button...i guess the mouse slipped lol

  • There's a reason she has a Grammy. She EARNED it. Music school is so tedious, and she's already mastered it and teaching. Let's see Bieber do that.

  • @AnEventfulDay I am so tired of Justin Bieber being used as a scapegoat for all the problems with the music industry. He may make shit music, but the kid is far more talented than most of the people on the radio, plays multiple instruments very well. I have no doubt he would do well in music school.

  • @AnEventfulDay People, seriousky stop mentioning pop stars. Comparing Bieber to Esperanza Spalding, it's like comparing Kanye West to Quincy Jones. One is a Master, the other is an apprentice, another is a pretender, and the other one is a virtuoso. I'll let you do the matching.

  • @AnEventfulDay BERKLEE FTW!!!!

  • who's in charge of booking for the white house poetry jam??

    email me at zaquerie@gmail

  • Your right,your nothing D;]

  • too bad she's not like my next door neighbor or better...

  • people today have distorted idea of what true tallent is.... THIS is what true tallent is.

  • as a young black woman in music, it's so inspiring to see an someone like ms. spalding be recognized as beautiful and talented without having to oversexualize herself to be noticed. her music gives me chills, in my soul, everytime.

  • @iwannabelikeJC Amen to that. Talent & good music is what's wanted, the memories made from them will be treasured for a lifetime. She's talented beyond her years. WOW! There's nothing left to be said.

  • @iwannabelikeJC The crazy part is this..anyone who knows what "sexy" truly is knows that that performance is "Sexier" then anythign Bouncy or those other half naked hefas have ever done!

  • @iwannabelikeJC This reminds me so much of Amana Melome...youtube(dot)com/watch?v=vAfn0jtfEnE

  • Comment removed

  • What a talent. She has everything!

  • @mcintoshcameron1955 actually there ARE some videos of him performing at the white house. but im not saying his more talentd thab Esperanza. he is a joke, that grammy tells it all

  • beautiful,

she's very talented and the music is quite extraordinary with a unique sound to it.

there's no need to compare her to anyone, she's extremely amazing. (:

  • I think I'm in love...

  • is perfect

  • I'm from portland!

  • To all the Bieber haters...why hate?? Why can't the kids and tweens enjoy the Bieber?? There's truly room for all music types. Your hating doesn't make it ok.

  • @tonimoon42 u troll. i mad.

  • Quit comparing Esperanza with Bieber. Two distinct artists that deserve respect. There's room for everyone.

  • 39 people don't know what tallent is! Esperanza ftw! :) x

  • God Is Good.

  • 39 fans of Just in Beer er ;) were too afraid to say anything. Cowards !

  • @uprightbassmatt justin beiber is better. what's wrong?

  • @derlau troll

  • @greghmn why are you even comparing Bieber, a pop star to Spalding, a jazz performer? This is obviously a desperate attempt to make yourself appear more sophisticated in the virtual world. But it may be comforting for you to know you are not alone. They are many insecure people out there.

  • @derlau In what way? Please give us reasons.

  • @mscubana he sings and dances better. Can you argue with that? That's my point. Anyway I was just bored and I thought I could enjoy some good music and read some sensible comments. All I got was a bunch of "music lovers" comparing an incredible jazz performer to a teenage pop star. So I thought they deserved a stupid comment from me. Thanks for your reply anyway.

  • @derlau But.... how does he sing better?

  • @mscubana I love you too.

  • @derlau I shall not reciprocate until thee answers thy question.

  • I wish i could just watch this without seeing stupid comments below such a wonderful video. People please comment on the music.

  • Justin Bieber disliked this 39 times. :/

  • Lauryn Hill must be proud of this!

  • What a display of opposite human natures. Beautiful and grotesque in the same room at the same time. Esperanza is everything those entitled, lying, mocking, thieving scum could never be. I welled up i
