  • I liked Blender 2.49 better then the newer version, btu I guess I'm going to have to adapt.

  • i am gonna be making a new solly hat that is SUPER SUPER SEXY lmfao

  • @gorrilaboy3000 Please use the newer tutorial, then. This is an old one and uses and outdated version of blender. Plus it's split up into like 8 videos whereas the newer one is only 1 video.

  • Milkshape 3D: <- not freeware :\

  • @nobraintrust Check out my latest video for a 1 hour long tutorial with completely free programs. No milkshape needed.

  • is there any specific version of python required?

  • @Axxinger Yes, 2.6.1.

But I recommend you watch my newer tutorial with Blender 2.56a which doesn't require python. Check the related videos or whatever to find it.

  • What do u mean uncheck all boxes, ive heard that said alot but uncheck all the boxes from what?

  • @TheTankbuddeh when you open MDL decompiler, you will have 3 checkboxes. Uncheck those all.

  • Now i downloaded the mdl decompiler and it says i need to reinstall cuz the vstdlib.dll is broken, and then i reinstalled and it still says that, plz help

  • @TheTankbuddeh Refresh SDK content, uncheck all the boxes before decompiling, and did you remember to hex the .mdl? IDST0 > IDST,

  • I rly need help. Ive got the smd exporter and importer but where do i save it to make blender realise its existance?

  • @TheTankbuddeh Don't install blender using traditional methods. Instead, go to the blender website and install it by just downloading the zip folder. This is the superior method of doing it. You can stick it on a usb drive and it will work. It will also give you the necessary folders to install scripts. If you didn't do it this way, I think the folders are in your program files somewhere.

  • and now this new error D= cant write the file in gui studi mdl this is so hard got stuck here all this hard work please reply when you can thanks oh and do I need hl2 ep 1 to do this ?

  • @bosszaagy Ok, could you please make an effort to use correct grammar?

Now, your problem is probably occurring because you didn't create the folders required. It's trying to create the .mdl file in a folder that doesn't exist. Create the necessary folders. If you are making a heavy hat, open your tf/models folder, and create these folders: player/items/heavy

  • @InteractiveBUD Thanks alot it worked however it showed me another error When I load the model using the new testitem command valve made for testing items it shows me this error "r Vertex File for 'player\items\heavy\heavy_domination.mdl' checksum 1248100606 should be -2104531038

Error Vertex File for 'player\items\heavy\heavy_domination.mdl' checksum 1248100606 should be -2104531038

E" and it just spams it in the console thanks for the help and sorry for me being annoying.

  • @bosszaagy I don't know about the new item_test map. This tutorial doesn't even include that.

  • cant find vmt file D= so much errors= (

  • and when I load my texture it says error loading image in vtfedit =(

  • something really irritating =( when I load the models it shows cut up models like the heavy it shows me his mouth I really hate that please help thank you

  • hey, using the MLDdecompiler it says this "extra App set to 211 but no SteamAppId"

    can anyone help me please?

  • @nagoffy Uncheck all the boxes. Also did you make sure to open the .mdl in notepad++ and change the IDST0 to IDST, ?

  • i can not figure out how to get the smd importer into blender please help!

  • It has to be in the correct folder. Check to make sure it is.

  • i need some help!!

after downloading and unpacking the MDLdecompiler in the sdk bin folder, it keeps giving me an error when i try to acces it:

"The procedure entry point Q_AppendSlash could not be located in the dynamic link library vstdlib.dll."

i tried refreshing the SDK content as well as older versions of the decompiler.... same problem....can someone tell me what i should do for it to work?

  • How to I make custom weapon models for TF2?

  • If I want to make a hat for Team Fortress Contribute, I need to save the HAT with the character or just the HAT?

  • @mixinghoney What do you think? Just the hat :)

  • Also can I friend you on Steam so I can bother you about modeling at my own convenience?

  • The SMD importer is poorly documented and wasting my time. The install tells you to put the files in a directory that does not exist and can only be created through command prompt. Once it "works" it cleans out the entire import menu in Blender so I can only see two SMD importing options. If I try to use either function it shits an error message at me "ImportError: No module named meshtools" What this means to me is "I can't be arsed to work go use something else shit for brains."

  • @sonikkuffffff I didn't write it :/

But I wholly agree with you. It is very very poor. Badly coded and badly documented. I wish the import/export scripts worked perfectly so I wouldn't even have to use milkshape, but I'm currently looking into a compromise between a plugin I found for blender 2.55 and 3dsmax. I'll make more video tutorials about this in the future.

  • @InteractiveBUD I found out you're supposed to put those scripts in the appdata folder, but neither the website or readme file explained this. Python also requires an environmental variable.

If you're still around I'm having a horrible time trying to learn uv unwrapping. I can't even see the little points to click on them. Plus, I've got this model that's basically 3D pixel art, so it unwraps weird.

How do I make the points show up? and how do I unwrap something that has a ton of sharp edges?

  • Can i use 3Ds Max?

  • @mixinghoney Sure you can. You might want to make your model (assuming you know how to use 3Dsmax) and then skip to part 3. If you know how to assign bones in 3Dsmax, then you don't even need milkshape, but if you don't want to deal with that, you can just export the .smd from 3Dsmax and then follow from part 3.

  • the sound is too low :/

i cant hear anythin g xD!

  • @SketchTourious i can... its only you com.

  • Hey I am having a problem, I know I should probably just keep trying but I am stuck on this part. Whenever I try to set the path for GUIStudioMDL i keep putting the path for the right place (the bin/ep1/bin) but it keeps saying studiomdl.exe and gameconfig.txt isn't there even though the studiomdl.exe is but the gameconfig.exe isn't, what should I do?

  • @boomsta559 Usually this problem can be solved by refreshing the SDK content. Do the following: Close everything > Open the SDK > click "refresh SDK content" > close the SDK > now try setting the paths again.

  • Is there any way to replace milkshape if it expires for free?

  • @turtwig321 Not legally... I don't torrent, so you kinda are on your own for that.

  • @turtwig321 there ARE serials on the net, so just search!

  • 2:45

I have a question regarding to the list. Is it required to have ALL of these programs? If not, then what are the most important? I'm new to this modeling business.

  • @NoWhereman4444 In short, yes. Especially if you are new to this sort of stuff, follow it exactly. As you become more advanced you realize that you can do without the exporter for instance and go straight to .obj format instead of .smd for use in milkshape, but for now, download everything. Most of it is free except if you want photoshop. And Milkshape is 30 dollars but well worth the cost.

  • @InteractiveBUD Thanks Man. I managed to get what I need, now I have to fix the "vstdlib.dll" error on the decomplier.

Thank goodness for the trial verson of Milkshape

  • 100/100 thx !

  • wait, but the thing is, i can import and export stuff, but i do not have the options to make them PHY files. are you saying i can change the files in milkshape?

  • @bob4life10 Don't worry, the physics model is just a regular .smd that is totally smoothed out. So you don't need to export it with anything special. Just smooth your physics model and export as .obj, open in milkshape > export as .smd. Profit.

  • sweet, thanks!

  • ey, i have another question(yes i have a lot of questions). i have no idea where i have to place dvondrake's exporter. when i tried installing it as an addon, it wont show up. im not sure if i placed it in the wrong place, or some other crap happened.

its also the same with the importer.

where did you export your files, and how did you install them? because at the moment i have to rely on a half assed exporter and importer which doesnt support physics files.

  • @bob4life10 I think his website explains where to put it, but if you for some reason can't get it to work I have a solution. Instead of exporting as a .smd, you can just export as a .obj, then open it in milkshape 3D. Once you are done doing the editing there, export as a .smd like you normally would. Same for the physics model. Just smooth everything > export as a .obj > import into milkshape > edit > export to .smd voila. No import/export scripts required with milkshape.

  • MDLdecompiler wont install, when I start the download it gives me a video-clip for realplayer, is this suppose to happen or is there a different url to download it?

  • @InsaneSecret6432 No... that's the right link. I'm not sure what you're doing to get a video clip to play.

  • @InteractiveBUD I press the download button and a milisecond later it goes to realplayer, do I need winzip or something like that to get it working right?

  • @InsaneSecret6432 Erm... I can't really say what is going wrong. I have no clue.

  • @InteractiveBUD I've just figured it out, theres a how to install mdldecompiler video and I got it installed just fine now

  • Can you make a tutorial on how to do this with v_models and w_models? that would be very helpful, seeing as I have found none.

  • @TheLoneRedSheep Sadly, I do not fully know how to do animations yet, which would be necessary for view models, but this tutorial pretty much covers world models and c_models.

  • @InteractiveBUD wait, so you can't just replace the models? like if I wanted to make a short sword for the kukri, I wouldn't be able to do that without animating?

great tutorial btw (if I haven't mentioned that already).

  • @TheLoneRedSheep Oh yes. Melee weapons are easy. I thought you meant view models for guns that need reload animations and stuff. All you do for that is make 2 models: one for the view model, the other for the world model. Weapons like the Shiv only need 1 model. Those are the c_models. If you need help with view models, IceColdFreezie made a really good tutorial for that. Check the related videos "Team Fortress 2 Viewmodel Tutorial - Pt. 1" >>>>>

  • @InteractiveBUD do you use the same model for both world and view model?

and thanks I'll be sure to check that video out.

  • @TheLoneRedSheep You can. When valve first released their game, they were really efficient. They didn't have c_models at all. Everything had a w_model and v_model. The purpose was so that it reduced lag. The v_model would obviously be a high poly, nice looking version of the weapon, while the w_model would be lower polys. It was good this way because w_models weren't seen up close, so you couldn't tell the difference. As further updates came out, they didn't bother to make w and v_models,

  • @TheLoneRedSheep And I'd prefer if you just asked these questions on the steam forums. That way I can type for longer and post links.

  • I'm trying to import the hl2 smd importer to blender but im unsure what I'm doing wrong, it says to install it I must install this script into blender by copying it into the directory, I copied the script but when i try pasting it into the directory it wont paste the script, if you know what im doing wrong I'll be grateful.

  • @InsaneSecret6432 I'm not exactly sure, but the way I have it set up:

I downloaded the ZIP file, not the .exe. That means I have a folder called Blender on my desktop instead of in my program files. Now, inside that folder, I have a folder called .blender, and inside that, a folder called scripts. That is where my smd importer is located. If all else fails, my best suggestion is to use Milkshape 3D to import the SMD then export it as a .obj file, then open it with blender.

  • @InteractiveBUD I had to uninstall blender and install the zip folder it took me a while to figure out what to do but i managed to get hl2 smd on blender now, thanks for this advice, I'm unable to download Milkshape 3D becuase the link in the description says the url is unavailible what should I do?

  • @InsaneSecret6432 I think the website is down. I updated the video description with a link to download it from CNET.

  • @InteractiveBUD Thanks for the link, installed just fine

  • By the way, Blender 2.53 Beta has a much improved UI, among many other things. Check it out.

  • cant get phyton to work. is it not workable with windows 7?

  • @Alvinvanggaardl Im not sure with windows 7. To be honest, I'm not even sure if the python scripts are needed... some people have reported not having it and still getting it to work.

  • ok, but i cant get the models of fx. the heavy and thats my problem

  • @Alvinvanggaardl

Python works fine with Win7. Where you have it installed may be a problem. I found success installing Python to C:\Program Files\Blender\Python

  • do i need all of those? isn't there an easier way to do this that doesn't involve downloading all that stuff?

  • @AustinZombieKIller Nope. If you really want to model, 8 or so programs aren't really going to stop you from your passion.

  • I'm having trouble hearing this on max volume.

  • @PhaserRave Yeah, sry about that. I had my volume up all the way when I recorded this. You could probably just turn up your computer volume to better hear it.

  • @InteractiveBUD I'm on a laptop, so I did use the computer's volume. :P I could use my headphones to get a similar effect, I just realized...

  • @PhaserRave Haha. Sorry again for the low volume.

  • @InteractiveBUD It's alright. I'll have to check out the videos later. I had created a model but couldn't convert it to source. I spent hours trying to get it to work... I eventually decided to send in the model on the contribute page as a .obj :s

  • @PhaserRave well you'll be happy to know that the compiling videos are higher in volume.

  • Ahem, I saw on the TF2 forum that FPSbanana was infected with a IE spreading virus that will infect everyone that enters that site. Was that a troll or have FPSbanana fixed it?

  • @Lofgon No that wasn't a troll. But the TF2Wiki virus was a troll.

  • @InteractiveBUD Ok, but is it safe to visit that now, and btw how do I place files in the GCF with GCFScape? I read on the GCFScape site but didn't find anything. Please help me?

  • @Lofgon When you are making the .mdl, you don't put it in the GCF. You create the folder structure how it would be if it were in the GCF, and then TF2 automatically knows you want that model and it doesn't look for it in the GCF

  • @InteractiveBUD But I still can't use the MDLdecompiler even if i put it in these folders. Or should I extract the .dll files to that folder?

  • @Lofgon No. If it still doesn't work, check to make sure you have the source SDK tool installed. Steam > tools > source SDK. If it still doesn't work, open up the SDK and click "refresh content"

  • @InteractiveBUD I just saw that I have put it in the wrong folders. Thanks for the help

  • O_O i'm so excited, you need to make the next steps. i've been having problems following written tutorials. and unwrapping is so complicated in blender. thanks in advance for making this.

  • kinda quiet.

  • i can tell this is going to help me :)
