  • One of my favorite songs,,,, smoke one first

  • I had the distinct pleasure of seeing this smoldering band twice;once on the undercard, and after they blew the Fillmore audience away, the second time as the headliner in a show that included the Kinks.Monster group!

  • Why isn't Spirit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

  • @albatross7677 not sure ? butt mark andes is about to be in wiht HEART, unless his fling with ann wilson back in the 80's gets in the way ?

  • @alexmonger11 Heart before Spirit? What a travesty!!!

  • @albatross7677 i agree, the rock n roll hall of fame is a joke now ! they have rap in there WTF !

  • WHAT A DYNOMITE GUITAR SOLO!!

  • Into the Favorites :)

  • Spirit always gets my "geriatric" ass up outta of my chair & dancing...and I don't even care a flip who might be watching!!! LOL!!! MORE SPIRIT!!!....YEAH!!!

  • Jammed on my air guitar with Randy & the boys on this track many times back in the day...still kicks ass today...Thanks for the memories!

  • great job surfrat , spirit brought some great stuff to earth !!!!!!

  • @ driverfli , As another old fart I frequently find myself surrounded by young poops at concerts featuring old fart bands still hauling their geriatric asses on stage and doing their stuff, some of which I was too young to see when they were first reaching their top spots. Seems to happen a lot!

  • absolutely correct

  • Loved it Chicago 1972 and always will.

  • OMG Break out the 8-track!

  • What a great rock and roll band .They never got the recognition they deserved. This is one of my all time favorite groups ,,,even or especially today

  • Definately brings back memories!

  • it's 2011, and my band plays DarkEyed Woman, of course I'm 57,,,

  • Excellent.

  • i have yet to hear a song from spirit that doesn't blow my mind.

  • i am going to listen to when i touch you and space out when this song is over

  • I was born in 54. Saw Spirit so many times! Randy California used to play with his teeth and behind his back. We used to say " look at that old guy playin drums. Now I'm older than he was then. But I did catch them in the later years in Encinitas Ca. before Randy drowned, playing a gig on Ed's 70th Bday. And he was still ripping up the drums!!!

  • @surfgaru Years after Spirit, Randy and Ed formed a band called Aqua Blue (I think) and played a couple of gigs with my band in San Fernando Valley. I got to know them a little bit. I saw Spirit many times too (I think they were the second concert I went to with Lee Michaels). One of the best American bands of all time. RIP Randy.

  • Oh wow....loved this when I was about 18...in England too.

  • A 5 star song: Dark-Eyed Woman - Spirit [California] - 1969 - "It's one of Randy California's (guitar) FINEST and hardest-rocking performances. Jay Ferguson (vocals)." - Clear Spirit-1996. NOTE: I have their first 4 albums/CD's on my shelf and they should be on yours. :-)

  • @mikekadas you are a killer spirit fan !!! very groovy

  • I played on the same bill with Spirit at the Santa Monica Civic when I was Linda Ronstadt's drummer (Stone Poneys). That was after I left The Electric Prunes. They were a great band. Bought all their albums and still have them on vinyl. Brings back good memories. My favorite song of theirs is "Fresh Garbage."

  • WOW...incredible how great this sounds even after 40+ years...SOOOO good...takes me back to my teen years when I was so into all this great 60's music....love it...

  • I'm 19, and this is great, the baby boomer generation(1945-1965) had the best rock music in my opinion for their adolescents, and the best music in the twentieth century. This is all I listen too, I don't even bat an eye to my generations music.

  • Thanks surfratt...saw these guys live in Dallas in '69 (I think) with Neils Lofgren' band on the SMU campus. They were great showmen as well as solid musicians. Great success!

  • @cheaptwangers lI remember seeing them in Miami 67-68 the Place or Thee Image rock halls.

I was SMU '69-72 &worked Concerts West longhaired security. I remember seeing some R'nRoll on campus.

  • Thanks for this.Spirt were solid!

  • goddam forgot this existed- haven't heard this one for about 35 years

  • This is the greatest song of all time............ along with Inside looking out ......... Mississippi Queen........maybe Strawberry Letter 23, oh screw it, tomorrow I'll just come up with about 75 more

  • Great Memories of the 70s!

  • gawd do i remember these guys...Northern Arizona...Randy...loved ya man....best shit to be had in 69.....miss ya and still have every album...Topanga Canyon...i remember the fire....wish you well....forever

  • Truly blessed as a teen to have seen this super tight band twice at the Fillmore East, the second time as the bill headliner!

  • awesome!

  • Dam never seen this guys live???I will have to rack my brain why not?

  • There was nothing like Spirit in concert.....unbelieveable....!!!!! I was given a drum stick from Ed Cassidy whata great guy!!!!!

  • Just got this album today and have played it all the way through twice. I got "The Family That Plays Together" in early September and the debut about two weeks ago. Next up is the soundtrack to "Model Shop" and "12 Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus." I've known about these guys since I was about 10, and now I'm finally buying their albums at age 32! Always one of those bands I'd been meaning to "get around to" sooner or later. Damn they were good! What a combo!

  • You have excellent taste!!!!

  • To Elldee626: Why thank you!

  • Saw this great band in 1969 at the Wheaton MD Rec Center....150 people attended... partied with the band after the show...still have an autographed "Clear" around here somewhere in the 1000's of lps

  • Well, are you???

  • Can only imagine how popular this band would have been had not their recording company not nixed a schedule appearance by them at Woodstock!

  • Missed a Woodstock slot eh? Would have given them more publicity and later people would learn of them more, since Woodstock is replayed often. The sounds they combined were just so different. That Best of Spirit Album was waaaaay out there. Not sure their music would have been appreciated that well at Woodstock, but certainly would have put them on the mainstream a bit more. Great band. Dark Eyed Woman, 1984, I got a line on you. Pretty top songs on one album.

  • Love it.

    Beautiful band!

  • I saw this great and underrated band twice at the Fillmore. The first occasion they were on the undercard of a show.

A year later they deservedly headlined it.

  • OMG...forgot all about this song!! F'ing classic!! TY SOOOOO MUCH!!

  • So special, forever magic ...

  • Great music.

    love it!!!

    thank you

  • A thinly disguised song about interracial love from an 18 year old Randy. Randy's solo is powerful.

  • randy had good taste

    :D

  • I'm 56 and Randy was da shit !

  • you´re 56 and you say: "was da shit"?

  • Heaven forbid that a 56 year old use vernacular of the day. It's how us old farts remain relevant and uh, cool and or sick! Peace to the Family!

  • lol ok.

  • Another great Spirit tune with a cool bassline from Mark, and smokin' solo from Randy!

Play your Spirit CD's today, as it's John's Birthday 9-25-43 to RIP 8-4-06. A great talent!

  • @bassandguitarguy what happend to mark andes ?

  • @babyj1996 Didn't Andes play guitar for Heart? I think he was with firefall beofre that

  • @gmkell59 Firefall and Jo Jo Gunn. Don't know about Heart.

  • @gmkell59 Yep. Heart too.

  • @gmkell59

Andes played bass with Heart and was Ann's boyfriend, for a while, I read -

  • @SupernalOne really ? he dated ANN ?

  • @gmkell59 YES HE WAS WITH HEART ! and he said he was having a fling with ann wilson

  • What a great song!

I was in High School when this came out.

    Still have it on vinyl.

    Major flashback!

  • Yea, we might be old, but we pioneered. Believe me, a bunch of kids know what we did, they just don't know what we went thru to do it. And thats the beauty of our memories they will never know. Hold tight and walk into the next adventure the same way we walked into this one.

  • good words Cttxlv

    Conn, Tex and LV?

    Nice cut, thanks surfratt.

  • Good eye fluffy, yes :-)

  • must have gotten some sleep the night b4

    who knows

    ty

  • damn, fever tree, strawberry alarm clock, spirit see blues magos up there, traffic, my goodness, utube is the way to go for us old farts

  • hahaha .. i m 19 ..and thanks to youtube i m discovering REAL music :D

  • @hyugakarn thats awesome , I also was turned on to Spirit at a young age , I was born the tail end of 77 , cant say Ive heard much Spirit on the radio ! Props for diggin good music !

  • @catdog420 i ben listening to spirit, since about 1967,im55,there music is so weird, its the only music i cant expalin,an makes me feel really strange, listen to life has just begun, or ,,when i touch you,,apple orchard,,they had man y good, and emotional songs, try an play the guitar solo to ,,dark eyed woman, keep tryin, its tricky, randy was a genious,he may have taught hendrix a thing or two,he played with him as a teen ager,,,

  • @flyfish777 Exactly. The best American band, in my mind. No restrictions. They just went where the muse took them.

  • @hyugakarn' Good job. 'Bout time some youngsters caught up to this shit. The guitarist, Randy California used to jam with Hendrix in NY.

  • @driverfl

As long as we have all those wonderful bands and tunes to savor, we will never be old farts. Love ,peace and rock+roll. Thanks for the cament.

  • @driverfl old farts give way to young farts, you were lucky enough to see this magic back in the day, for now we'll have to put up with you tube, which is a genius invention and you re right the way to go!

  • @driverfl utube is great for farts of any age!

  • @driverfl Fever Tree- I forgot those guys. Thanks! 58 yrs. on the planet and still catching up!

  • @driverfl Really. Especially since "classic" rock stations NEVER play any of the great stuff. Here? We're like kids let loose in a candy factory.

  • @driverfl you are damned right , and we didnt get deaf by it ^^

  • Loved this band since the late 60's. Good to see some variety here. Miss you Randy! Rock On forever! Lar

  • Spirit gets my vote for the most underrated, underappreciated band ever.

  • I agree with you 150% These geniuses had it

all going. Jazz, rock, blues, even touches of

Classical. I have their stuff on vinyl, and CD. Yeah, I'm OLD!! LOL...Or maybe BOO-Hoo!!

  • the lamb lies on brodway

  • wow just wow

  • F*****G Amazing ! I first heard this back in 1979, I finally found it.

  • Thanks again surfratt you rock man! im 42 and its cool to hear some kick ass spirit!

  • Actually, this song is origonally from their 3rd album 'Clear' (and not the first album in which the art is from from where I clicked to get here)
